Croydon College is a further education college deeply rooted within its local communities, that aims to be an anchor institution for the local area. Croydon College now seeks to appoint new Governors who can support their growth and development as they continue on their improvement journey.

About Croydon College

Croydon College consists of two campuses. The Croydon campus provides general further education and the Coulsdon campus, which is a sixth-form College.

Through these two sites in South London, we offer a wide range of provisions which includes vocational and academic programmes for young people, courses for adults to upskill or retrain, higher-level courses, apprenticeships, and a specific curriculum for learners with high needs. In total, we provide education for around 6,500 learners who are supported by a dedicated team of over 500 staff.

As a college, our aim is to meet the education and skills needs of our local community and employers based across our region. This can be a challenge given that Croydon is now London’s largest borough and is made up of a huge diversity of vibrant backgrounds and cultures to which we must cater.

There are additional challenges across our borough that we must be mindful of such as those specific parts of our local area which have high concentrations of disadvantage and poverty. We take these challenges seriously and we are proud of the impact that our provision and wider support has in supporting growth, development and opportunity.

We are proud of the very positive relationships we have with our local stakeholders, and we are continuing to work with them to ensure that our curriculum aligns with their needs and the wider industrial and economic needs of the local area. Ultimately, we want to ensure we are providing high-quality education and helping to solve workforce issues across South London.

We have recently appointed a new and experienced Chair, Ian Valvona, to lead our Board. Ian has joined us at a time when we have been reviewing the progress we have made in relation to our previous strategic plan whilst working on the development of our next. Following our last full Ofsted inspection (February 2023), our Board plays a vital role in supporting and challenging our executive leaders to address the issues raised by inspectors whilst continuing to be a motivating and supportive presence.

We believe that this is an interesting time to be a part of the College as we look to embark on a new and exciting chapter in our organisational history; a chapter which will be defined by improvement, growth and positive impacts for our local communities.

Two other governors have recently departed from our board and as such, we now seek to appoint their successors and hope to identify candidates who can help add their own expertise, knowledge and passion to support us through this next exciting chapter.

Role Description

We are fortunate to have a professional, high-performing board. Many of our governors have only joined us within the last two to three years and others are only just entering their second terms of office. We hope that this will bring a strong level of stability in the years ahead, allowing us to work collaboratively in bringing success to the College as we strive towards our new strategic goals. With recent departures, we now seek to appoint two new members to our board who can offer further support in this regard.

HR & Organisational Development

Firstly, we seek to appoint an experienced leader of HR and/or organisational development. We will be welcoming applications from those who are used to operating at a strategic level and have experience of developing strategies relating to HR policy, staff satisfaction and recognition, and talent attraction, along with those working in roles linked to organisational development and transformation.

The appointed candidate will become a full member of our board, along with being invited to lead our Remuneration Committee as its Chair, whilst also joining our Finance & Resource Committee. If the appointed candidate(s) are based professionally within a local employer, then it is highly likely that we would also invite them to join our Learning & Quality Committee.


We also seek to appoint a second individual who will be able to join our main board as well as our Audit Committee. Candidates for this role will need to be either experienced, senior, qualified finance professionals or be working in strategic roles relating to audit, risk, compliance, cyber security, or be a practicing legal professional.

General experience and commitments

We will be welcoming applications from candidates who are based in a range of professional settings for these roles. This may include corporate and commercial settings as well as the third and public sectors. We would especially be interested in receiving applications from those with the appropriate skills and experience who are based within local employers.

We ask our board members to be willing to commit to a four-year term of office. At present our Board holds a minimum of four meetings per year with our sub-committees meeting three times per year. The majority of these meetings are currently scheduled to take place from 6pm and usually take place at our Croydon Campus. We also hold two strategy days per year which coincide with Board meetings. It should be noted that due to the recent appointment of our new Chair, our meetings schedule is currently under review.

At present, it anticipated that the candidate appointed to join our audit committee will need to be able to dedicate around 10 hours per month to the role. The candidate with experience of HR and/or organisational development appointed to lead our Remuneration Committee will be expected to commit an average of 12 hours per month to the role, with commitments anticipated to be higher in March, June and the Autumn term.

Whilst previous governance experience is welcomed, it is not essential. All new governors will be supported by the College with a comprehensive induction and training process and ongoing support thereafter.
