About the role

The College are looking for qualified individuals to join the Coventry College Corporation Board who have executive-level experience in education (leadership or finance), legal and HR/Organisational development and can both support and challenge senior managers to ensure the college realises their ambition of maintaining its presence in the sector.

Coventry College’s Corporation Board is the college’s governing body with responsibility for ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction; holding senior managers to account for the college’s performance and overseeing the financial management of the college.  The Corporation Board sits termly and is supported by committees and are ultimately responsible for setting the strategy for the College and monitoring performance and standards, along with ensuring the effective and efficient use of resources, the solvency of the College and the safeguarding of its assets.

Who we're looking for

Coventry College is seeking to complete its collective skill-set as a governing body with an injection of new talent. They are looking for people who like a challenge and most importantly are passionate about delivering positive outcomes for both the people and businesses of the local area.

Thank you for your interest in the role of Governor of the Corporation Board at Coventry College.

Coventry College was created following the merger in August 2017 of two well-established colleges in the city, City and Henley, and now provides education and training to over half of the 16 to 18-year-olds in Coventry – serving 9,000 learners across a wide breadth of provision and levels from foundation to apprenticeships and up to degree level. We make a significant contribution to meeting the skills needed in the local and regional economy, in supporting the West Midlands Combined Authority Regional Skills and Plan and the first Local Industrial Strategy to be launched in a devolved region.

Our Henley Campus is located in the north east of the city and is well known for its hospitality and catering training. It also specialises in sport, business, health and care and engineering. The City Campus is located close to the city centre in purpose-built modern buildings and known for its specialisms in public service vehicle training, digital and creative industries, construction and a strong apprenticeship provision. Both colleges have established strong partnership working with the local community as well as local and national employers. However, we are a College with some specific objectives that we want to achieve and some specific challenges we want to overcome; therefore, we are looking for skilled and experienced individuals who can help us achieve this.

Our vision is to transform lives, enhance business, and empower communities. It is our mission to provide exceptional education, skills and training to meet the needs of individuals, business and communities. As a College which is two years into a merger, with a drive to improve the quality of our provision and our outcomes, we welcome all applicants who relish a challenge and who have a strong vocational drive to make a difference for their local community and it’s young people and employers.

We will welcome applications from individuals who can demonstrate how they are exceptional members of the community, who recognise the challenges facing the further education sector and who can contribute to the development of the Corporation Board. We are ideally looking for candidates who have a background in education, finance, law, human resources or the third sector and an appreciation and knowledge of business processes. However, whilst we are looking for these skills, we are also focused on building a Board where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

Delivering education and training to over 7,000 students of all ages

Coventry College was formed in August 2017 as the sole General Further Education provider in the city, delivering vocational, technical and professional education and training to over 7,000 students of all ages, from Entry Level to Higher Education.

Building upon the rich histories of its predecessor colleges, City College and Henley College, the College can trace its origins back to the 19th century with the formation of the Mechanics Institution in 1829 – created to up-skill weavers in a range of vocational subjects. Both predecessor colleges have a proud history of working closely with their communities and this remains a key part of the College’s ethos.

The creation of the College was founded upon the opportunities facilitated by combining forces: to establish one voice for Further Education in Coventry. This ensures we become more adaptable and work efficiently alongside employers, schools and stakeholders to develop and then fulfil education and skills strategies. It also allows us to develop greater financial resilience in challenging times for the sector, maximising the ability to reinvest in excellent training facilities and protect the skills of the city’s future generations.

Key strategic priorities

In order to continue to evolve the college business and ensure that it is fit-for-purpose, future-proofed and continues to meet the needs of all its stakeholders, the Board have set out five key strategic priorities:

  • Student Experience & Outcomes – Deliver a consistently excellent student experience, enabling progression to further study or employment for all our students, particularly in the advanced manufacturing and engineering sector;
  • Valuing Our People – Attract, develop and retain talent;
  • Financial Strength – Maximise financial rigour, diversification & effective use of resources, providing sustainability for re-investment;
  • Stakeholder Partnerships – Build partnerships that benefit our students, create growth and meet defined needs for re-investment;
  • The College Offer – Create a vibrant, attractive offer, meeting local and regional skills needs.

It is now the role of the Board, the Executive Team, the staff and the students to deliver these priorities and continue to maintain the college’s strong position within the City’s community.
