About Waltham Forest College

Waltham Forest College is one of London’s most successful FE colleges, delivering hundreds of courses from pre-entry to level 5, including apprenticeships, with a yearly intake of 4500+ students from 31 London boroughs and counties across the UK.

The College has been creating futures for 80+ years and continues to provide London with a workforce that closes the skills gap across various industrial and professional sectors. Further information about the College’s history can be read here.

Waltham Forest College is an aspirational place to learn. With highly skilled, supportive staff and industry-standard specialist facilities, the College works in partnership with employers to equip learners with the skills they need for their future. We are proud to be an inclusive college, supporting and encouraging our students to ‘Think BIG’ in achieving their career goals.

We are one of the most diverse colleges in London and are even more diverse than the local community. Our borough is one of the most culturally rich areas in the country.

There are 97 different languages spoken by students at Waltham Forest College. Our extensive new buildings, which include the Creative Arts building and our new STEM centre, have been purposely designed to accommodate students with disabilities.

At all levels, we are committed to providing appropriate resources to enable and encourage access and participation for all in further and higher education. This takes a number of forms – funding to the Student Association, direct staff support, resources in kind in the form of accommodation and office costs, time off for student representative activities, and a wider staff development commitment to developing and embedding learners into all decision making, evaluation and quality improvement measures in the College.

Student engagement is constantly being reviewed and developed through the Students’ Union, Student Governors, Course Representatives, Student Ambassadors, Student Council and the senior leadership team listening to feedback from regular student surveys and focus groups.

About the role

As a prospective Governor, you will be joining both a high-performing Board and one of the top-performing colleges in London, holding specialist academy status for healthcare, construction, green technologies and hospitality and one of only 12 leading institutions selected as a WorldSkills UK’s Training Centre of Excellence.

This provides an exciting opportunity for our Governors to impact, influence and support the continued and further development of world-class skills, embedding excellence and developing the higher-level technical skills that employers need.

Waltham Forest College is overseen by a dedicated and experienced governing body, the Board. The Board is comprised

of independent Governors, staff and Student Governors who, collectively, approve and direct the strategy of the organisation whilst determining its educational character and holding our Executive to account.

Our Governors are responsible for the financial stability of the College and for ensuring we have the resources available to deliver high-quality teaching and learning in brilliant learning environments.

Given the rapid pace of growth, development and improvement across the College, coupled with the exciting and ambitious plans we have for the future, we are now looking to appoint two new governors to our Board. We are seeking professionals with career expertise in capital projects/estate management – working at a senior level with experience in large capital development and project management.

Time commitment

The Board meets 4 times over the academic year with a strategic away day once per year. These meetings are held face-to-face and in-person attendance is very much welcomed and encouraged.

Committees meet 3 to 5 times over the academic year, and meetings are held virtually to encourage participation and attendance.

A full and comprehensive induction programme is provided to all new governors and continued professional development in the role is encouraged, especially for those looking to progress within the Board. Successful appointment to the Board as a Governor is initially for one year with a further three years for a full term.
