Stoke on Trent College is looking to engage qualified professionals on to their Corporation Board. Specifically, they aim to attract people who have substantial executive-level experience in finance, further education curriculum and quality and organisational transformation who can support and give strategic direction to the senior management of the College.

The Corporation Board of a Further Education College take joint responsibility for setting and monitoring the strategic framework within which the College operates, and for ensuring that it is well managed and solvent, holding senior managers to account for the College’s performance and overseeing the financial management.

Thank you for your interest in becoming a Governor of Stoke on Trent College.

You would be joining the board at a challenging but exciting time. Over the past two years we have been engaged in the preparation, negotiation and funding of a ‘Fresh Start’ business plan for the College. Along the way, we have recruited a new senior leadership team, many new board members and have undertaken significant restructuring at the College; both physically and in terms of its staff.

Our recent Ofsted inspection, one of the first under the new framework, still assesses the College as ‘requires improvement’ but acknowledges significant progress and highlights a number of areas as now being rated ‘good’.

We have a clear mission: “to provide an inclusive professional and technical education to energise and grow our city region.” We aim to deliver that and drive forward so that all of our learners gain “the confidence and skills to make choices for a lifetime of fulfilment”.

We believe we are at the start of a positive journey to become the quality college that the people of the Stoke on Trent region deserve. We need a board that is able to fully engage with the leadership team to provide them with the necessary support and challenge to ensure that this journey reaches its goals as fast and effectively as possible.

There are three vacancies for governors. One of these will have a strong senior level financial and/or audit background, another will have experience in Further Education curriculum and quality and the third will have led or lived through transformational organisational change across any sector.

All our governors need to have a passion for the positive role that an FE college plays in society and be aligned with our vision & mission. Whilst not having to be located in the Stoke area, a good understanding of the challenges facing the city region would be an advantage, as would a network of local contacts.

As a governor, you would need to be able to attend board and appropriate committee meetings, which are typically held bi-monthly at either our Stoke or Burslem sites. You would also need to interact more directly with college staff and students through ‘learning walks’ and ‘link visits’ from time to time.

This is a great time to become part of the team that leads SOTC along its journey, there are significant challenges ahead, but that is what makes the role worthwhile and provides governors with personal development as well as the satisfaction of being part of something special.
