About the role

Nottingham College is looking to engage an experienced further education curriculum expert to join the Corporation Board; someone who can support the College to make the strategic changes required, test the curriculum strategy and support them to overcome the known challenges.

The Corporation Board is responsible for the College’s overall functioning, ensuring the quality of the teaching and learning experience and within the wider community. The Corporation meets throughout the year to undertake its responsibilities and ensure the strategic aims are met.

Who we're looking for

To support Nottingham College’s ambition they are looking to appoint a new Board Member (Governor) to their Corporation Board – the governing body of the College. They are specifically looking for an experienced leader of FE curriculum. Someone who can add value to the discussions which take place on the Board through providing support and challenge to their leadership. You will be part of a board which does this through discussion, debate and the appraisal of reports, plans and strategies.

Whilst having non-executive/board-level experience is desirable, what is more important to the College is your ability to work as part of their Board and provide the scrutiny required in an organisation of this size from a place of experience. As a Member of the Corporation Board, you will become an integral part of the governance and oversight.

Ideally, you should live or work locally to Nottingham as your attendance will be required at the meetings of the Corporation Board, which meets ten times per year. All Members are expected to join a committee of the Board which can be discussed with you on appointment.

Following the successful merger of New College Nottingham and Central College Nottingham, we are proud to be Nottingham College. One of the largest further education colleges in the country.

Nottingham College is taking the lead in developing a new vision around the delivery of a skilled workforce required by employers in the city, county and region. Our Corporation Board – the College’s governing body – is seeking to recruit a high-calibre further education curriculum expert to give time and energy to the College. Helping us secure the future of our significant organisation and for the benefit of the communities we serve.

The coming years will continue to be challenging for all publicly funded organisations and further education colleges are particularly stretched financially. The College has been afforded significant assistance from various stakeholders with the costs of the merger and for a £58m capital project to construct a major college building at Broadmarsh East – which is well underway and due to complete in 2020.

In addition to the vital work around the development of our estate, we have innovative plans for our curriculum strategy and a transformational investment in our digital infrastructure. There are improvements to be made and we are addressing them together.

In summer 2017, New College Nottingham and Central College Nottingham joined forces to become Nottingham College and, prior to the merger, both colleges were inspected by Ofsted and graded ‘Good’.

Since this time, the new college has developed a realistic self-review process, highlighting key strengths plus areas of development. Every year they help over tens of thousands of local people gain skills and qualifications which change their lives. By helping them into higher education and employment, they help Nottingham and Nottinghamshire prosper by ensuring that businesses are able to find the people they need to grow.

The Nottingham College staff team and Governors know the difference that education makes to their students’ lives. They see it every day. Working with a significant number of employers locally, regionally and nationally, the College is constantly developing and delivering excellent education, training and support that meets their needs and those of students – creating opportunities and prosperity for both.

It is a place where students are given every opportunity to develop a full range of skills for the workplace. A place where students meet employers who can support their career aspirations.

The new City Hub campus represents a significant investment in education for the city.  Opening in 2020, it will offer new facilities and resources for college students and provide community facilities such as a new training restaurant, café and performing arts centre.

Nottingham College has a lot to be proud of. With exceptional facilities for their engineering and construction students and a traditional art school – to name but a few – though they also recognise they have areas to improve and are addressing these.

Nottingham College’s plans for improvement are not limited to their estate portfolio. The digital strategy will enable them to move towards increased means of digital learning across their entire curriculum, and a greater amount of online learning and development opportunities for both staff and students. They are already addressing the infrastructure which is required for this huge task across the College.
