About Buckinghamshire College Group

Buckinghamshire College Group was formed in October 2017 from the merger between Aylesbury College and Amersham & Wycombe College, and comprises of three main campuses in Aylesbury, Amersham and High Wycombe.

The College provides vocational, technical and professional skills education and training from entry level through to level 5 to around 7,000 16-18s, adults and apprentices every year.

From Accountancy to Construction, Creative Arts to Health and Life Sciences, Digital to Motor Vehicle, Business to Early Years, Music and Games Development to Public Services, Hair and Beauty to Building Services, students and apprentices learn in industry-standard environments getting hands-on experience in workshops, salons, laboratories, health care suites, film and tv studios and many more.

We work with hundreds of employers to support their workforce development plans and to ensure that our training programmes are relevant and responsive to the skills needs of the local economy. Our students are an integral part of our local community supporting those most in need through vibrant social action projects and charitable activity.

The College has an ambitious strategic intent for meeting the skills needs of Buckinghamshire and its local communities through strong partnership working with Buckinghamshire LEP, the local authority, local employers, Bucks Business First and Bucks New University. The College’s ‘Beyond Ambition’ strategy for 2023-28 focuses on the key strategic goals:

The College is currently entering an exciting phase of building a new campus in the heart of High Wycombe. By relocating the activities of its Amersham and Wycombe campuses to a central High Wycombe location, this will not only ensure the local community is better served but also that local, regional and national skills objectives are being met by growing the provision in the south of the country.

Who we are looking for

The work of a Member of the Corporation Board (governor) in setting the strategic direction of Buckinghamshire College Group and providing leadership is central to the success of the College.

By becoming a Governor at Buckinghamshire College Group, you will be joining a high-performing board and successful College. This is your opportunity to steer provision that benefits the students, the local community and employers directly.

Being a Governor at Buckinghamshire College Group is hugely rewarding and an opportunity to make a real difference to the communities served by the College.

While in some respects the role of the Board of Governors can be summed up as one of exercising “oversight” of a college and its business, the term should not be taken to imply in any sense a passive or merely symbolic role.

The Board is accountable for the financial solvency of the College, its sound management and the quality of the service it provides. The Board is also accountable for the proper use of the public funds entrusted to it.

Sound governance requires more than simply ensuring that the books balance and that the CEO & Principal is getting on with the business of running the College within the parameters established by the governors.

Colleges must be able to respond to changes in direction of government policy and anticipate changing needs in their communities. The Corporation Board must be actively involved in reviewing the role of the College and in planning and managing change to ensure the long-term health and success of the College.

You will need to have a passion for education and a drive for ambition to build on the College’s continued success for the benefit of their students, their staff and the local communities. This should be underpinned with a track record of strong strategic leadership and expertise as a qualified finance professional.

This role offers a fantastic opportunity to join an ambitious and dynamic Governing Board and to genuinely impact the future success of the College, its students, its staff and the community.

You will support the development and influence the direction of Buckinghamshire College Group at a time of great momentum for the College, as they seek to grow the organisation and aspire to provide outstanding education and training opportunities for young people and adults across the region.

The Board of Corporation is made up of 18 members, comprising 13 independent members from the local and business communities, 2 staff members, 2 student members and the Principal & Chief Executive.

Independent and Staff Governors serve on the Board for a term of 4 years and may be eligible for reappointment for a further term of 4 years.

Corporation meetings are held at least four times a year and governors have the opportunity to attend regular strategic/development events.

The Corporation operates a committee structure to assist the Board in fulfilling its responsibilities via the following committees:

  • Audit and Risk Committee
  • Finance and Resources Committee
  • Curriculum, Quality and Students Committee
  • Estates Committee
  • Remuneration Committee
  • Search and Governance Committee
  • Special Committee

Additionally, Governors are expected to join at least one committee — that will depend on their area of expertise and/or qualification.
