About the Education Training Collective

The Education Training Collective (Etc.) is the umbrella brand of our group which incorporates our four main delivery arms:

  • Stockton Riverside College, based in Thornaby, delivers vocational education, including our notable performing arts provision and the Tees Valley Logistics Academy.
  • Redcar & Cleveland College also delivers vocational programmes, with a specialist focus on clean energy.
  • Bede Sixth Form in Billingham, primarily delivering A levels, is also the location of our Institute of Sport and Education.
  • NETA operates over two dedicated sites delivering engineering training, apprenticeships and commercial delivery.

We have additional provision for learners with specific needs at our Skills Academy in Billingham, as well as substantial Prince’s Trust provision, with several community bases across the Tees Valley and the wider northeast. Higher education provision is delivered across the group, primarily at our Stockton Riverside and Redcar & Cleveland College sites. In total, we support the training, learning and development of around 15,000 students each year.

Our quality of provision is high, with very positive achievement rates. In our most recent Ofsted inspection in May 2022, the Etc. achieved an overall grading of ‘Good’, with behaviour and attitudes, personal development, leadership and management, and education programmes for young people all graded ‘Outstanding’. This is a result we were proud of and is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the c.800 staff who support our provision across the group. It is also a position from which we aspire to grow and improve further.

With a turnover of c.£31m and consistently ‘good’ financial health, we have been able to secure funding for capital transformation projects across all main sites. We will be moving our engineering academy to our Stockton campus and providing a new scaffolding training centre, funded through our levelling-up grant. We have recently completed our new Clean Energy Education Hub at Redcar & Cleveland College and an annexe to Bede Sixth Form College, and we are involved in a council-led master planning initiative in Stockton to create a care and health innovation zone along the riverside.

All of this work, as well as the wider business of our group, is underpinned by a rigorous and robust business planning and performance review system which drives down decision-making to those closest to the students wherever possible. With a focus on renewable energy, health innovation and professional services we are continuing to build on the quality of our provision and provide for all students and the communities we serve.

We are proud of the excellent relationships we have with our local stakeholders, which includes schools, the Tees Valley Combined Authority, Local Authorities, Teesside University and a wide range of employers. Through these partnerships, we have been able to build our reputation, support the growth of our local economy and truly see the positive impacts of our collective efforts.

Given our recent developments and our aspirations for the group moving forward, we now seek to add additional strategic leadership expertise to join our board. Role Description

The positive relationships between our governors and leadership team have created a collegiate, challenging and supportive board culture that enables successful outcomes. Candidates must share this recognition of building positive relationships amongst the Board whilst offering a scrutinising and supportive approach. The candidates should be able to demonstrate their shared values with the Etc. group and express their commitment towards the group and student outcomes.

As we look to further strengthen the depth and diversity of thought and experience on our Board, we now seek to appoint an individual with experience of strategic leadership within a local employer. We welcome applications from those working in a range of sectors and industry backgrounds who share an interest in the passion for education, improving student outcomes and supporting local opportunity.

We ask our Board Members to commit to a four-year term of office. Appointed individuals will need to attend Corporation and Committee meetings throughout the year, as well as strategic planning, training, and development activities.

We try to ensure that these are in person wherever possible. Still, we do appreciate that many of our governors lead busy lives and so readily facilitate virtual attendance whenever needed. Where possible, we like our governors to become engaged and visible within the organisation through undertaking learning walks, attending Learner Forums, meeting with our staff and much more. All of our governors recognise the importance of understanding what the group is about and how it feels, to make strategic decisions with the best interests of the group at heart.

We estimate that our governors dedicate around 10 hours per month to their roles.

Whilst previous governance experience is welcomed, it is not essential. All new governors will all be supported by our Director of Governance, Sarah Thompson with a comprehensive induction and training process and ongoing support thereafter.
