Buckinghamshire College Group is seeking a senior industry expert from one of the local priority skills areas – construction, creative and media, and digital technologies – to join the Corporation Board as a full member and bring valuable employer insight of the quality of provision and contribute to the continued success of our Ofsted ‘Good’ rated College.

Buckinghamshire College Group is led by a Corporation Board comprised of governors representing the community, College staff and students, providing confident, strategic leadership to create robust accountability, oversight and assurance for our educational and financial performance.

The Board of Corporation is made up of 18 members, comprising 13 independent members from the local and business communities, 2 staff members, 2 student members and the Principal & Chief Executive. Independent and Staff Governors serve on the Board for a term of 4 years and may be eligible for reappointment for a further term of 4 years.

Corporation meetings are held at least five times a year and governors have the opportunity to attend regular development events. The Corporation operates a committee structure to assist the Board in fulfilling its responsibilities via the following committees:

  • Audit Committee
  • Finance Committee
  • Quality and Curriculum Committee
  • Estates Committee
  • Remuneration Committee
  • Search and Development Committee
  • Special Committee

Board members are collectively responsible for determining the educational character of the College, overseeing the effective management of the college’s finances and resources, overseeing the quality of its provision, and managing the appointment and performance of senior post holders.

Who we are looking for

With the College’s recent Ofsted report highlighting our successful employer engagement strategy, which has benefited apprentices and students to gain meaningful work experience as part of their student journey, we are keen to engage a senior leader in business or industry who is connected to one of the local priority skills areas to join the board. The NHS and public sectors are well represented at board level, and we are therefore particularly interested in engaging those working in the other priority areas, including construction, creative and media industries, digital technology, and supply chain businesses who operate locally.

We are keen for this person to contribute their industry knowledge and commercial acumen at the board level to oversee the development of the college’s provision in line with local and regional skills needs and provide insight into the quality of the college’s provision from an employer’s perspective. With the estate plans underway to build a new college campus in High Wycombe, the board will need to consider how the space will be used to create a digitally enabled and outstanding teaching and training environment that meets the needs of students, staff, and employers, and therefore industry insight will be invaluable to decision making processes.

Candidates must have a good understanding of governance, safeguarding, risk and financial management, and strategic oversight through their experience in an executive or senior leadership role, or as a non-executive director. You must be able to commit to attendance at all the meetings and be willing to contribute to at least one of the sub-committees.

At Buckinghamshire College Group we are very proud of our achievements and are on an exciting journey. We currently have campuses in Aylesbury, Amersham and Flackwell Heath and are embarking on an exciting new campus build in the heart of High Wycombe. We are vital to the delivery of the post-16 education and skills agenda and economic success for Buckinghamshire and beyond.

Our focus on technical, professional and vocational skills education for all ages, apprenticeships and adult learning differentiates us within the county. We have strong active partnerships in the local community and are proud of our position in providing people with the skills to fully participate and contribute to economic growth. Ofsted have recently graded us as a Good college, highlighting in their report that governance at the College is strong.

Our Governors share a common desire to support the College in maintaining a safe, stimulating and secure environment for all our students to enjoy their learning experience and succeed to achieve their aspirations.  We are a team of volunteers from the local community and student and staff groups whose main role is to collectively support and challenge where appropriate and ensure delivery of the College’s vision and strategic direction.

About the Organisation

Buckinghamshire College Group was formed in October 2017 from the merger between Aylesbury College and Amersham and Wycombe College and comprises three main campuses in Aylesbury, Amersham and High Wycombe. The College was judged as ‘Good’ by Ofsted in November 2021.

The College has an ambitious strategic intent for meeting the skills needs of Buckinghamshire and its local community through strong partnership working with Buckinghamshire Local Enterprise Partnership, the local authority, local employers, Bucks Business First and Bucks New University. The Buckinghamshire College Group ‘Big Bucks Ambition’ strategic plan developed for 2018 – 2023 focuses on the key strategic priorities of:

The Corporation was established under the Further and Higher Education Act 1992 for the purpose of conducting Aylesbury College. As a result of its merger with Amersham and Wycombe College, the College trades under the name Buckinghamshire College Group and Aylesbury College remains as the legal entity.

Governors serving on the Board of Corporation share a common desire to support the College in maintaining a safe, stimulating and secure environment for all students to enjoy their learning experience and succeed to achieve their aspirations.  The Board is a team of volunteers from the local community and student and staff groups whose main role is to collectively support and challenge where appropriate and ensure delivery of the College’s vision and strategic direction.

The College is currently entering an exciting phase of building a new campus in the heart of High Wycombe. Relocating the activities of its Amersham and Wycombe campuses to a central High Wycombe location will not only ensure the local community is better served but also that local, regional and national skills objectives are being met by growing the provision in the south of the County.
