This is an exciting opportunity to join a vibrant and dynamic college as Governor. Barnsley College is looking to engage people with senior leadership experience from large corporate or publicly funded organisations in or around Barnsley and South Yorkshire.

About the role

With a turnover of £42m and employing around 650 staff, who support and educate over 10,000 students, Barnsley College is a large business of education with a solid social purpose. The Governors collectively set the direction of travel for the organisation and monitor the pace of delivery. They now look to attract new talent to their Board. Every Governor of Barnsley College is expected to bring value to the organisation and the discussions had at strategic level; using their experience of different sectors and applying their expertise to support and challenge the College Leadership.

The College have completely revolutionised their governance structure and made vast improvements these past few years. Whilst retaining statutory committees, they have replaced others with the process of ‘deep dives’ where Governors look at specific issues and problems in collaboration with the Principal & CEO and his Executive. This allows a close partnership working between staff and Governors, whilst allowing the Board to gain appropriate levels of assurance in addition to the main meeting of the Board. Their approach to quality improvement and oversight is dynamic and focuses on four key pillars: quality, sustainability, reputation and curriculum.

The Board’s focus is now firmly on how to drive ‘Industry 4.0’ as a College and build a curriculum to support this national agenda.

Who we're looking for

Focusing on your attributes and inquisitive nature more than your experience alone, the College’s ideal candidate will have leadership experience gained within a large and local employer from Barnsley or South Yorkshire, with strong connections to Barnsley and the local community.

Recognising the College Leadership have high levels of autonomy delivered through a commercial approach to education delivery, Barnsley College are not looking for another executive manager to deliver the operations. They need a skilled leader who can add value to the strategic discussions and scrutiny of reports and plans presented by the Principal & CEO and his team. More than that alone, they want someone who feels they can make a real difference to lives of Barnsley College students, apprentices and learners through being a Governor who is active in the life of the college.

Welcome to Barnsley College, one of the very best colleges in the UK.

We are the main provider of post-16 education in the Borough and play a vital role within the Yorkshire and Humber region by delivering outstanding teaching and learning and very strong outcomes for students.

At our annual strategic event, our board of governors sets the overall direction for the College for the coming year. We then work with the executive team to build the detailed strategic plan that we present here.

We have identified four strategic pillars: quality, curriculum, sustainability and reputation.

Our goals include:

  • Maintaining our ‘Outstanding’ Ofsted status.
  • Introducing the Government’s new T Level qualifications.
  • Maximising our Higher Education offer.
  • Working ever more closely with businesses on apprenticeships.
  • Developing stronger partnerships with stakeholders in the Borough and the region.
  • Introducing new provision for 14 to 16 year olds who have previously been home educated.
  • Continuing to grow and future-proof our finances.

We have received huge support, locally and regionally, to invest in our outstanding teaching staff and create one of the very best learning facilities in the country. Our goals are ambitious but we believe that by working ever more closely with our partners they can be achieved.

Ultimately, it is all about making sure the people of Barnsley can be proud of their College. Knowing it is going to help them get the skills they need for the careers of today and into the future.

We know too that the quality of leadership and governance we are able to provide will be key to our success. That is why we have continued to strengthen our board and have thoroughly reviewed our governance model. The recruitment and development of outstanding leaders will continue to be a key priority for us going forward.
