Could you bring your audit expertise to the College’s Board and help them take their next step?

  • Location: Gateshead, Tyne & Wear
  • Salary: Unremunerated with reasonable expenses paid
  • Closing date: CLOSED FOR APPLICATIONS

About the role

Based on the Gateshead Quayside in sight of the iconic Millennium and Tyne Bridges, Gateshead College serves its diverse communities with a broad range of courses across a wide range of sectors helping individuals progress in work and businesses to flourish.

The College supports over 7,000 students each year offering study programmes for young people, apprenticeships, and a wide range of adult provisions. The College is frequently recognised as a leading provider of post-16 education based on both student satisfaction and achievement rates and in March this year was graded as Good by Ofsted, with recognition given for their work on skills education reflecting the College’s focus on industry-led education which meets regional skills needs.

The day-to-day management of the College is led by the college’s executive team who you will support as a member of the Governing body. The Board’s role is to set the College’s vision and direction and ensure that, as an organisation, it is working towards its strategic ambitions and maintaining the highest of standards always putting learners at the heart of everything.

“Our Board is full of enthusiasm with an aim to be the best in class. As a college, our future couldn’t be brighter, and our culture is unique to anywhere I have worked before. It’s an incredibly rewarding experience.”

Michael Wood-Williams, Chair of the Board

The College’s Board comprises 16 members from a variety of backgrounds and sectors led by the Chair of the Board, Michael Wood-Williams, and supported by Director of Governance & Compliance, Nicola Taylor. Collectively, they take responsibility for ensuring that the College delivers on its purpose: to develop skilled, confident learners who succeed in work and life.

Board members have a wide range of experience and expertise – currently across education, community, business, finance and leadership. Because of their diverse backgrounds, they are able to share corporate responsibility for ensuring the educational character of Gateshead College. They oversee the health of the organisation to ensure it remains financially sustainable, focused on achieving results that matter and is a place where everyone feels they belong and can succeed.

The work of the Board is supported by its six formal committees, with governors and co-opted members contributing to oversight across a range of areas, including Curriculum and Quality Standards, Finance and General Purposes, Governance, People, Senior Post Holder Remuneration and Audit.

To strengthen the level of expertise on our Audit Committee, the College is seeking to make a further appointment. The person appointed will not only contribute to the business of the committee – focused on audit, compliance and institutional risk – but also help increase the level of scrutiny, challenge and support available to our senior leaders.

Who we are looking for

Led by Principal & Chief Executive, David Alexander, the College has delivered the first year of its strategic plan, has reflected on the successes of the journey so far and considered the areas which need to be prioritised so it can continue to deliver on its agreed purpose.

The leadership team receives support, challenge and scrutiny from a range of dedicated experts and the Board, believes that they can still do more to help shape and support further success for Gateshead College with the addition of another expert who shares our values.

As such, they seek to appoint a new member to the Board. The appointed candidate will also be invited to join – and perhaps, in the future, lead – the Audit Committee.

“The College has been through a period of change and development. Our Board is relatively new, and they have joined with enthusiasm to create a great dynamic. Our new governor will have a chance to help create and shape our future.”

David Alexander, Principal & CEO

Candidates for this role will need to be able to demonstrate a successful track record as a senior, qualified audit professional. This experience could have been gained in either a commercial audit setting or through a non-commercial avenue such as in the public sector or a not for profit organisation. We are looking for candidates who are analytical and can ask questions that the Board perhaps are yet to ask themselves. Additional knowledge of public sector financial mechanisms would be welcomed.

Whilst previous governance experience is not essential, candidates should be able to demonstrate an understanding of the principles of governance and how these should be implemented to discharge fiduciary responsibilities in the context of a non-executive board

Expectations and Commitment

Direct experience in further education is not essential, but you will need to be able to demonstrate an understanding of the impact that education has on improving life chances and supporting economic prosperity, as well as a strong commitment to the values and vision of Gateshead College in improving standards of education for the benefit of the students served by the College.

You should want to apply your specialist knowledge and expertise to contribute to strategic discussions and decision-making by working constructively as part of a non-executive team. You should demonstrate an understanding that governors must act fairly and impartially, with a commitment to the principles of safeguarding, equality and diversity.

The appointed candidate will be expected to attend four meetings of the Board each year and four additional Audit Committee meetings, one of which is held jointly with the Finance & General Purposes Committee. All meetings take place in person, allowing governors to experience the vibrant college atmosphere whilst on site. Additionally, there are two Board Strategy days per year.

Governors on the Board should not be required to dedicate more than 10 hours per month to their role.

Governor induction, training and development opportunities are all available, as well as the invitation to attend exciting events and ceremonies throughout the year. This type of engagement by the governing body with the wider college community is both encouraged and supported.

Peridot Partners and Gateshead College are, together, committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and our client expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. The successful candidate will be subject to an enhanced DBS check and satisfactory references before any final offer can be made.
