About Bradford College

Based predominantly in the heart of the City of Bradford, Bradford College is one of the largest education and training providers in the region.

The College is steeped in history having begun its story over 190 years ago as the Bradford Mechanics Institute. Whilst the College you see today looks very different, we still hold on to these technical and vocational traditions as we seek to support the education and training needs of our local communities and support our local employers by developing their future workforce.

As a college supporting the education and training needs of a major city, we have a diverse curriculum offer which encompasses a wide range of vocational qualifications, apprenticeships, T-Levels and community courses along with the delivery of both undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. Our courses are career-focused and we aim to give each of our students a head start in the industry they aspire to work in.

Through our provision, we are privileged to support around 20,000 people with their education. All of this would also not be possible if not for the dedication of a team of almost 1,000 staff, each of whom truly embodies our organisational values of respect, inclusivity, trust, inspiration and aspiration.

We are proud of the quality of provision we deliver. In our last Ofsted inspection in November 2021, we were graded as ‘Good’. We were delighted with this outcome as a demonstration of our growth and improvement but as an organisation, we have a constant focus on improvement and ensuring we are providing outstanding outcomes for our students.

Our achievements to date are due to the high-quality, dedicated staff and senior leadership team who truly understand the local area and our students. We are also fortunate to have a committed and experienced Board to help challenge, scrutinise and support us as we continue on our journey. To this end, we now seek to appoint a new member to our Board who will also be invited to join our Audit Committee.

Peridot Partners and Bradford College are, together, committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and our client expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. The successful candidate will be subject to an enhanced DBS check and satisfactory references before any final offer can be made.

Role Description

Our Board currently comprises 18 members but as we look to support succession planning and being mindful of the need to increase the diversity of thought on our Board, we would now like to welcome a new member to join us.

Our Governors come from diverse backgrounds, and each are expert in their professional fields. Due to this, our Board can offer high-quality support to our senior leaders. They ask us questions, challenge our thinking and help us to make the most of new opportunities. We’d now like to add a new member to our board who can contribute in a similar way using their professional expertise.

We seek to appoint a new member who can bring their natural curiosity to the role; a person who is willing to challenge us on our current thinking and activity.

We hope to receive applications from candidates who are working in a strategically focused role and able to demonstrate a successful track record throughout their career. We would welcome applications from those working within employers based within Bradford or the surrounding area who will have an understanding of local challenges and opportunities.

Previous experience on a board of this kind is not essential, nor is knowledge of the further education sector as we look to add diversity of thought to our Board. However, candidates must be able to demonstrate an understanding – and perhaps passion – for the impact that education has on local communities such as ours.

The appointed candidate will not only contribute to the business of the Audit Committee but will also play an important role in helping to increase the level of scrutiny, challenge and support available.

Time commitment

The Board meets 5 times over the academic year with a strategic event which includes an overnight stay each January. The Audit Committee meets four times per year. All of our meetings are held face-to-face at college.

We estimate that member of our Board dedicate approximately 10 hours per month to their role.

A full and comprehensive induction programme is provided to all new governors and continued professional development in the role is encouraged, especially for those looking to progress within the Board. Successful appointment to the Board as a Governor is for a four-year term of office.
