About Askham Bryan College

First opened in 1948 as the Yorkshire Agricultural Institute, Askham Bryan College is a specialist land-based college delivering provision across five campuses in the North of England.

With campuses in York, Middlesbrough, Saltaire, Wakefield and Gateshead, we currently serve the education and training needs of around 3,500 students and deliver a wide-ranging curriculum offer.

We were last inspected by Ofsted in September 2023 and graded as ‘Good’ with specific comments being made relating to how the college makes a strong contribution to meeting local and regional skills needs and also how the College does well in relation to supporting our students.

Our further education provision includes specialist courses focused on subjects including arboriculture, horticulture, agriculture, animal management, veterinary science, countryside and the environment, and equine.

We also deliver a range of curriculum outside of the traditional land-based theme, with courses in engineering, motorsport, outdoor adventure sport, sports development, coaching and fitness, and uniformed public services.

“We have been on a significant journey as an organisation over recent years and what we have here now is simply a great place, with fantastic people who are highly committed to ensuring our students have the very best opportunities.”

Dr Tim Whitaker, CEO & Principal

We offer our provision across a range of levels too, supporting 16–18-year-olds – the majority of whom study at Level 3, and through our partnerships with local employers, we support between 500 – 600 apprentices. We deliver higher education to c.450 students each year and are the only land-based college to have its own degree awarding powers.

In the next academic year, our curriculum offer will see further diversification as we begin the delivery of our first T Level in September 2024.

Furthermore, we provide a range of adult learning and commercial provision which allows us to support the local communities that we serve.

All of our work is delivered by a dedicated, experienced team of almost 480 staff who are each experts in their specific fields.

Each of our staff members demonstrates our values and personal qualities daily — this is part of the Askham Bryan College DNA.

It is hardwired into everything that we do and ensures that we all remain committed to delivering with purpose, taking ownership, building trust, and always learning.

Our Askham Bryan College DNA is a golden thread that runs through the entire organisation and this includes our Board of Governors.

Our Board is made up of a team of 12 dedicated volunteer members, along with staff and students who are each committed to values and to our shared goal of developing talent, to respond to current and future challenges for the economy and environment.

The day-to-day management of the college is delivered by our executive team, led by CEO & Principal, Dr Tim Whitaker. The Board’s role is to set the college’s vision and direction and ensure that as an organisation, we are working towards our strategic ambitions whilst maintaining the highest of standards — always putting learners at the heart of everything.

Peridot Partners and Askham Bryan College are, together, committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and our client expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. The successful candidate will be subject to an enhanced DBS check and satisfactory references before any final offer can be made.

About the role of Governor

The Board has recently undertaken an external review which concluded that there is strong evidence that the Board is highly proficient and consistently impacts positively on college strategy, effectiveness, and outcomes.

To ensure this continues to be the case, we now seek to appoint a new member who will join our full Board, as well as having a place on our Quality & Standards Committee.

Here, you will bring knowledge and expertise relating to curriculum, quality improvement, teaching, and learning as well as bringing your shared commitment to the Askham Bryan College DNA, our vision, mission and values.

“Our governors love being on campus. Our students are committed, excited to be here and create a wonderful atmosphere. I’m proud to be a part of it and being on the Board is the best ‘job’ I’ve ever had.”

Maureen Vevers, Chair of the Board

As a member of the Quality & Standards Committee, you will use your educational knowledge and expertise to offer insight, challenge and advice to senior leaders that will help support them in growing, developing and improving the educational provision across the whole organisation.

Along with this expert knowledge, you will also be able to deliver on your fiduciary duties as a full Board member, helping to oversee the wider health of the organisation, ensuring that we remain financially sustainable and compliant, and focussed on ensuring that as an organisation we are facilitating the development of well-rounded, active citizens.

After all, our students are the guardians and custodians of our future world.

Candidates for this role will need to be able to demonstrate a successful track record as a senior leader in a professional capacity. This experience could have been gained either directly within the FE sector, or through working in a sector-related role.

Candidates will also need to be able to demonstrate their understanding and appreciation for the impact and importance that FE colleges have on supporting local employers and economic prosperity, improving life chances and as a vital facilitator of social mobility.

Expectations and commitment

Whilst previous governance experience is not essential, candidates should be able to demonstrate an understanding of the principles of governance and how these should be implemented to discharge fiduciary responsibilities in the context of a non-executive Board.

You should want to apply your specialist knowledge and expertise to contribute to strategic discussions and decision-making by working constructively as part of a non-executive team.

You should demonstrate an understanding that governors must act fairly and impartially, with a commitment to the principles of safeguarding, equality and diversity.

“There’s something about this place that gets under your skin. The staff, the students, the opportunities that we ignite. There’s just something very special here.”

Judith Clapham, Director of Governance

The appointed candidate will be expected to attend four meetings of the Board each year and three additional Quality & Standards Committee meetings.

We try to always ensure that meetings are held in person as this allows governors to experience the vibrant college atmosphere whilst on site.

Additionally, we also host a Board strategy day in March each year.

Governors on the Board required to dedicate an average of around 10 hours per month to their role.

Governor induction, training and development opportunities are all available, as well as the invitation to attend exciting events and ceremonies throughout the year. This type of engagement by the governing body with the wider college community is both encouraged and supported.
