Fundraising Trustee and Committee Members Florence Nightingale Hospice Charity

Help shape the future of hospice fundraising as a Fundraising Trustee or join a new Committee, bringing your expertise to support local care.

  • Location: Buckinghamshire/Remote
  • Salary: Voluntary role, reasonable expenses paid
  • Closing date: 9 a.m. Friday 6th November

Florence Nightingale Hospice Charity (FNHC) is seeking an experienced fundraising professional to join its Board as a Fundraising Trustee, alongside up to two external professionals to join a new Fundraising Committee.

Supporting people living with life-limiting illnesses and those close to them across Buckinghamshire and surrounding areas, FNHC is entering an important period of growth. Following its merger with South Bucks Hospice in 2025, the Charity is developing its services and looking to grow and diversify its income to meet increasing local demand for hospice care.

The Fundraising Trustee will bring senior strategic fundraising expertise to the Board and chair the new Committee, helping to shape fundraising strategy, oversee performance and identify opportunities for sustainable income growth. Committee members will bring specialist expertise, fresh ideas and constructive challenge across areas of fundraising and related disciplines.

Previous trustee or committee experience is not essential; FNHC is looking for people with relevant professional expertise and a commitment to making a difference to local hospice care.

Who we are

Florence Nightingale Hospice Charity (FNHC) exists to ensure that people living with a life-limiting illness, and those who love and care for them, receive the very best hospice care – wherever and whenever they need it.

Since 1989, FNHC has supported thousands of patients and families across Buckinghamshire and surrounding areas, working closely with Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust to fund and commission vital hospice services. These are delivered through Florence Nightingale Hospice at Stoke Mandeville Hospital, Butterfly House in High Wycombe and in the community.

Today, FNHC has around 140 staff and the support of more than 1,200 volunteers. Following its merger with South Bucks Hospice in 2025, the Charity is entering an exciting period of growth, with ambitious plans to respond to increasing demand for high-quality end-of-life and palliative care across the region.

About the role

This is an opportunity to use your fundraising expertise to help shape the future of hospice care across Buckinghamshire. The Fundraising Trustee will provide strategic oversight of FNHC’s fundraising and chair a new Fundraising Committee that brings together external expertise and colleagues from across the Charity.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Helping to establish and chair the new Fundraising Committee.
  • Appraising and overseeing FNHC’s fundraising strategy, performance and profitability.
  • Contributing to longer-term fundraising plans, forecasts and opportunities for sustainable income growth.
  • Providing constructive challenge and expert advice to the Board and Senior Leadership Team.
  • Supporting good practice, regulatory compliance and improvements to fundraising processes.

Committee members will bring specialist expertise, ideas and constructive challenge across areas such as events, individual giving, corporate partnerships, major giving, direct marketing, trusts and foundations or legacies.

Together, these roles will help FNHC strengthen and diversify its income, enabling the Charity to support more people and families who need hospice care.

Who we are looking for

We are looking for people who can bring relevant fundraising expertise, fresh thinking and a genuine commitment to making a difference to local hospice care. For the Fundraising Trustee, we are particularly interested in someone with recent senior-level experience who can provide strategic leadership and constructive challenge. For Committee members, specialist expertise in a particular area of fundraising or related activity will be equally valuable.

You may bring:

  • Senior strategic fundraising experience across a range of income streams, or specialist expertise in areas such as events, community fundraising, individual giving, corporate partnerships, major giving, direct marketing, trusts and foundations or legacies.
  • A track record of developing sustainable income and identifying creative opportunities to grow and diversify fundraising.
  • Strong commercial and analytical skills, with an understanding of fundraising performance, profitability and risk.
  • The confidence to offer constructive challenge while working collaboratively with Trustees, senior leaders and fundraising colleagues.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build positive relationships and influence others.
  • Experience within the charity sector; an interest in hospice or health care would be desirable.

Previous trustee or committee experience is not essential. We welcome applications from people of all ages and backgrounds who want to use their skills to make a positive difference.

Time commitment

The time commitment for this role is  1-2 days per month on average, with reasonable travel expenses available. The initial appointment is for three years, with renewal every three years, up to a maximum total term of 12 years.

  • The Board meets quarterly in Aylesbury or High Wycombe, usually from 5pm.
  • The new Fundraising Committee is expected to meet quarterly.
  • There may be occasional Board or Committee away days and fundraising or networking events.
  • Trustees and Committee members are expected to allow sufficient time to read papers, prepare for meetings, have relevant conversations and stay informed about FNHC’s work.
  • The overall commitment is expected to be around 1–2 days per month.
  • New Trustees will receive a comprehensive induction, including meetings with the CEO, Director of Fundraising & Marketing and other members of the Senior Leadership Team, as well as visits to Florence Nightingale Hospice and Butterfly House.
  • The Fundraising Trustee must be eligible to act as a charity trustee and willing to undertake a DBS check.

Welcome from Noel Ratcliffe

At Florence Nightingale Hospice Charity, we want to ensure the best hospice care is available to everyone who needs it in Buckinghamshire. Our ambition to provide consistently high-quality and compassionate care across the county is demonstrated by our recent merger with South Bucks Hospice in October 2025. We now commission and fund hospice care at two sites, Butterfly House and Florence Nightingale Hospice, as well as in the community.

We work in partnership with Buckinghamshire Healthcare Trust (BHT) and commission many hospice services. I am very proud of all that has been achieved by our excellent team of volunteers and staff, and the new services that we have introduced. This includes continued funding of our hospice at home teams across the county, including our new overnight team and Compassionate Neighbours programme. We continue to work hard to generate sustainable funding for the increasing number of people needing hospice care locally and to help families make the most of every day.

About Florence Nightingale Hospice Charity

Florence Nightingale Hospice Charity (FNHC) is entering an important period in its development.

Since 1989, the Charity has worked to ensure that people living with a life-limiting illness, and those who love and care for them, can access the very best hospice care wherever and whenever they need it. Today, FNHC supports services across Buckinghamshire and its borders, working closely with Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust to fund and commission specialist hospice care.

Following its merger with South Bucks Hospice in 2025, FNHC has expanded its reach and now supports services through Florence Nightingale Hospice at Stoke Mandeville Hospital, Butterfly House in High Wycombe and across the community. These include Hospice at Home, Day Hospice, outpatient nursing care, physiotherapy and complementary therapies, lymphoedema care, counselling and bereavement support, patient advocacy and benefits advice.

The Charity currently funds around £2.5 million of services and projects each year. Its income comes from a diverse range of sources, including 21 charity shops and online sales, community and events fundraising, corporate partnerships, individual giving, major gifts, trusts and foundations, legacies and the Hospice Lottery Partnership.

With a growing and ageing local population, demand for end-of-life and palliative care is expected to increase. FNHC has therefore embarked on a growth strategy to understand the hospice services that will be needed in the future and to raise the income required to support them.

This creates an exciting opportunity for the new Fundraising Trustee and Committee. Alongside an established team of 15 fundraising professionals, they will bring additional strategic insight, specialist expertise and constructive challenge to help FNHC strengthen and diversify its income.

The ambition is not simply to raise more money, but to build a sustainable fundraising model that enables FNHC to respond to changing local needs and continue providing high-quality care and support to patients and families for years to come.
