The Stonyhurst Foundation exists to ensure that any child from any part of society has the opportunity to live, work and grow at Stonyhurst, the oldest continuously active Jesuit school in the world. The Foundation currently seeks a new Foundation Director who believes in this mission and can lead the charity successfully towards its goal of making a Stonyhurst education available to as many young people as possible – could it be you?

About the role

The Stonyhurst Foundation Director is the Chief Executive of The Stonyhurst Foundation, reporting to the Board of Trustees. The person in this role has the ultimate executive responsibility for achieving the Foundation’s agreed strategic plan, as defined by the Trustees, and for the administration of the Foundation, including ensuring compliance with regulatory, reporting and other requirements. Operationally, the Director’s role is to secure philanthropic and other external funding for the school, via the Foundation, especially through major gifts from individual donors.

The Foundation Director manages The Stonyhurst Foundation with the assistance of the Foundation Manager, who is responsible for the day to day running of the charity. The Foundation Manager is a permanent employee of the Foundation and supports the Trustees and Director in their undertakings, including all regulatory, reporting, and other filings.

The opportunity to appoint a new Director has arisen because the founding Director has indicated to the Trustees his desire to retire.  A former Governor, Deputy Head, and alumnus, his retirement has been long-planned, and he will remain an active supporter of the Stonyhurst Foundation.

Who we are looking for

First and foremost, we are looking for someone who believes in and is passionate about the mission of and purpose of The Stonyhurst Foundation and of Stonyhurst as an educational institution. It is essential that our Foundation Director is passionate about what Stonyhurst has to offer young people and can represent the school with energy, enthusiasm, and authenticity.

We are open to receiving applications from those who are based outside of Lancashire. However, regardless of where our new Director is based, it is critical for the person in this role to be someone who is visible at Stonyhurst on a regular basis, and who embraces the idea of being a well-known member of the community. While our initial thinking is that the role will be full-time, we are open to hearing from candidates who would like to explore the possibility of working part-time.

A key part of this role will require building and maintaining relationships with a wide variety of internal and external stakeholders while exercising discretion and diplomacy. Therefore, we are seeking someone who enjoys meeting and getting to know people and who also has excellent listening skills and a high level of emotional intelligence. The successful candidate will be both a team player as well as someone who can demonstrate a track record of taking the initiative to develop and implement their own ideas.

Due to the financial responsibilities of the person in this role, we are particularly keen to receive applications from those who bring the business and/or finance experience required to fulfil these duties successfully.

Welcome from the Chairman

Dear Candidate,

I am delighted that you are interested in becoming the next Director of The Stonyhurst Foundation.

The Stonyhurst Foundation has been established to raise financial aid and bursary support for pupils to attend Stonyhurst College, the oldest continuous Jesuit School in the world.  It was incorporated in July 2019 and received Charity Commission registration in December 2019.

The Stonyhurst Foundation has had an exceptionally successful start.  It has the backing of the alumni and wider Stonyhurst family and it has benefited from overwhelming financial support from members of the Stonyhurst community, friends and supporters who share the vision of providing much needed bursary and fee assistance for young people.

The Foundation has raised over £8M in its three-year existence and we are delighted to currently be supporting 34 pupils at Stonyhurst and its Prep School, Stonyhurst St Mary’s Hall – the majority of whom receive between 80 – 100% fee remission.

Stephen Withnell, who joined Stonyhurst from Goldman Sachs, initially as a Stonyhurst Governor in 2017, and in 2018 as Deputy Head (External) and Director of the Foundation, is retiring from Stonyhurst this summer.  The opportunity has therefore arisen for a new Director to join The Stonyhurst Foundation and to continue the Foundation’s ambitious plans to remove financial barriers, making a Stonyhurst education available to as many young people as possible and transforming young lives.

Given the extent of early success the Foundation is looking to the future, confident that its ambitious mission is welcomed by the wider community, ensuring that Stonyhurst continues to be a beacon of educational excellence on both the national and international stage.

About the Organisation

Established in 2019, The Stonyhurst Foundation is an independent charity whose purpose is the advancement of education for the public benefit by providing financial support for scholarships, bursaries or other financial assistance to pupils and prospective pupils of Stonyhust and Stonyhurst St Mary’s Hall.

Stonyhurst aspires to be the UK’s leading co-educational Catholic boarding and day school for 3 – 18-year-olds.  The creation of The Stonyhurst Foundation is key to this ambition.  Stonyhurst is proud that around 37% of pupils are in receipt of some level of fee or bursary assistance.  This support has, however, historically been funded from College income.  The Stonyhurst Foundation has been established to provide much needed bursary assistance both now and to support future generations of pupils.

The goal of the Foundation is to remove financial barriers, making a Stonyhurst education available to as many young people as possible. The Stonyhurst Foundation aims to be the largest independent charity of its kind in Catholic independent education in the UK.

Broadening access to Stonyhurst is core to the Foundation’s mission.

Our team

The Stonyhurst Foundation is supported by an experienced, dedicated and supportive Board of Trustees. The Foundation Director manages The Stonyhurst Foundation with the assistance of the Foundation Manager, who is responsible for the day-to-day running of the charity, including administration, compliance and regulation.

The Stonyhurst Foundation has an office within Stonyhurst and works in close collaboration with colleagues at Stonyhurst including: The Headmaster, the Stonyhurst Association (Alumni relations), the Stonyhurst Bursar and Accounts Office and the Stonyhurst Development Office. The Stonyhurst Head of Development is the Major Gifts Officer for the Foundation and the Development Officer conducts prospect research and data analysis on behalf of the Foundation as well as for the Development Department.  The Foundation and Development teams work closely together and are mutually supportive.

How we do what we do

To ensure the continued success of the Foundation a number of targeted events are planned each year.

These fall into a number of key areas:

  • Personalised reach-outs to members of the wider Stonyhurst community in the UK and internationally
  • Individual meetings and briefings of potential major donors
  • Friend-raising events
  • Regular communication with donors and the Stonyhurst family
  • Major events to garner the support of the wider Stonyhurst community for the work of the Foundation

Accessibility

As we are based in a Grade 1 listed building, we are not able to make adjustments in order to be more accessible. The building is very old and contains a number of steps and levels, so structural changes to modify this aren’t possible. However, we will absolutely ensure that we consider accessibility in our plans for any new buildings.

Our accessibility provisions include:

  • Accessibility dogs are welcome
  • Papers and materials can be presented in different formats
  • A sign language interpreter can be accessed for interview
  • Working patterns and locations can be adjusted
