About the role

FitzRoy is a national charity committed to supporting and transforming the lives of people with learning disabilities and autism. We were founded in 1962 by Elizabeth FitzRoy and John Williams, pioneering parents who wanted their children with disabilities to have a better life. They were determined that people with disabilities have the opportunity to live in small homes in their communities, rather than in institutions hidden and cut off from life.

Today, this strong value base continues to drive us every day and ensure that people with learning disabilities and autism live the life they choose, and not a life defined by disability. From supported volunteering and community involvement through to assistive technology and service user forums; we offer a diverse range of services, tailored to the wants, needs and aspirations of people with disabilities – listening and engaging with the people we support to continually develop our approach to care.

We are now seeking a Director of Operations and Business Development to provide visible and clear leadership to our dedicated and committed team. Bringing robust, strategic thinking to help continue to evolve and grow our organisation, enabling us to support more people and ultimately transform more lives.

Who we're looking for

Our Director of Operations and Business Development will bring a proven track record of delivering significant organisational growth and will have well-honed strategic skills to anticipate new opportunities, forecast and plan ahead. With demonstrable strategic leadership experience within a social care setting, you will work collegiately with our experienced senior leadership team to inform the direction of the organisation and drive quality, innovation and continuous service improvement.

You will be a person-centred and visible leader with the ability to engage, influence and inspire teams across Operations, Quality Management, Health and Safety and Business Development. Sharing our values of seeing the person, being creative and being brave, you will have leadership experience of enabling geographically dispersed multi-disciplinary teams to tailor support to the needs of every individual.

This past year has been one of growth with new contracts in Hampshire, branching out into Coventry and further growth in Kent. We have outperformed our operational and fundraising forecasts, with our income growing by 15%. As we look ahead to the future, we are seeking a new Director of  Operations and Business Development to bring the strategic thinking needed to help steer a path forward. You will navigate the ongoing challenges that exist within our environment, continue to drive forward on our ambition for outstanding quality and first and foremost focus on enabling the people we support to realise their goals and dreams.

We are looking for a strategic and collaborative leader who can challenge and enable us to continue to be creative, agile and responsive in delivering our services. You will be a visible leader, committed to supporting and developing a committed, diverse and able staff team. You will also help to build our strong reputation and drive our growth which will enable us to support more people with learning disabilities and autism.

Fifty years ago, most adults with learning disabilities lived their lives isolated and often ostracised from their communities. Elizabeth FitzRoy and John Williams both had a vision of a different way of doing things.

Involving the people we support

We believe that the best people to help us improve our services are the people who use them. The people we support take part in regional forums and help us to recruit the best people by taking part in staff interviews.

Our goal is to give those we support a collective voice in their care and the ability to influence the thinking and focus of the organisation.
