Alternative Futures Group is one of the largest not for profit Health and Social Care charities in the North West and has been changing lives, creating independence and achieving great outcomes for the brilliant people we support. Next year we are making plans to celebrate our 30th birthday.
With an annual turnover of over £60m, we employ 2,000+ staff who proudly support more than 1,000 people with a range of learning disabilities and mental health issues. Our personalised services are tailored to meet the specific needs of each and every person we support.
We look to connect people to their loved ones and the communities in which they live, promoting independence, choice and opportunity to ensure they live a full independent life, as they wish to live it.
By getting to know the people we support, understanding what is important to them and how they want to be supported, our person-centred approach allows us to tailor support. We develop person-centred care plans and one-page profiles by working in partnership with our people, their families, advocates and local authorities.
We focus on the things that are important to the people we support, ensuring together, we help them to reach the outcomes they want to achieve.
As a large, successful charity in the North West, but one without a significant public profile, we have often described ourselves as the charity world’s “best kept secret”.
To meet our aims and drive forwards our ambitions we no longer want to be a secret!
We are proud of what we do and the difference we make in people’s lives, and our new strategy includes the aim to raise our profile and elevate our clients’ voices in the public sphere.
In order to support our plans and enable and empower our people to do amazing things, the Board is now looking to appoint two new trustees with financial expertise to replace those whose terms have come (or are coming) to an end.
We are seeking individuals with a fundamental alignment to our charitable purpose and mission. With exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, you will bring sound judgement, the ability to think strategically and offer constructive challenge and debate to the Board and senior officers.
While new Trustees do not necessarily need to have held previous non-executive roles, they will be able to demonstrate a successful track record in wide reaching senior leadership positions.
Specifically, to complement the strengths of our existing team, we are looking to appoint two Trustees with experience at a strategic level in Finance.
One trustee will Chair our Audit and Risk Committee and one will sit on our Finance and Performance Committee.
For both roles we are seeking qualified accountants who can take an overview of our finances, provide challenge/support and ask difficult questions when required. Above all, are seeking trustees with a strong social conscience and alignment to the values of AFG.
In order to help drive our organisation forwards whilst maintaining our strong reputation with our regulators and commissioners we are ideally looking for new Trustees with a strong profile and connections to networks across the North West, and the ability to promote and boost awareness of Alternative Futures Group and our philosophy.
Time commitment of circa 1 day per month. In addition to board meetings, each Trustee will have membership of one subcommittee.

In that time, we’ve created lots of magical memories and continue to shape future opportunities to involve the people we support as they go about their daily lives in the local community; and also opportunities to bring families, friends and everyone together to shape our future.
Alternative Futures was founded by Matthew Clarke on the 22nd January 1992. It then went on to gain its charitable status in February of that year.
Originally located in Merseyside in 1992, Alternative Futures pioneered alternative provision to patients living in hospitals and institutions who we enabled to move into a community setting.
Alternative Futures were commissioned to provide support for people with the most complex needs, which other organisations couldn’t always accommodate. From the outset we have been creative and innovative market disruptors.
From our origins in Merseyside we have evolved to become a large North West based provider of support, care and specialist services to adults with a wide range of needs such as learning disabilities, physical disabilities and mental health needs.
Alternative Futures continues to strive to enhance people’s lives as a trailblazer within the sector.
We continue to support individuals to realise their aspirations, working locally in the community providing supported living and community outreach services, based at our Independent Hospitals, and through individual budgets.
Our supported living and community outreach services offer different models of support for individuals. Whether in someone’s own home, flat schemes or shared accommodation, we have a range of individual flexible packages available from 24 hours, to just a few hours of support per week within the community, depending on individual needs.
Our Independent Hospitals provide healthcare and support for people with serious mental illness along a recovery pathway influenced by a psychosocial intervention framework.
We ensure the people we support can move along a pathway towards independence at their own pace and build their coping and lifestyle skills gradually within a therapeutic environment.
We also offer a wide range of specialist care and support services to adults with complex needs. Our complex care services ensure the people we support maintain independence and choice.
Complex care support is planned around people’s lives, to ensure dignity and respect. Recognising complexity, and working in partnership, we aim to ensure our support is consistent, long term and of the highest quality. We also understand the sensitivities of providing support in your own home.
As a digitally progressive organisation we encourage the opportunities technology offers to facilitate greater choice, control and independence for the people we support. Alternative Futures continues to strive to enhance people’s lives as a trailblazer within the sector.

Alternative Futures Group is Governed by our Board of Trustees who are responsible for determining our strategic direction, our operating and financial position and establishing the Group’s control and risk management frameworks – effectively monitoring the management and best interests of our organisation.
Our Board is made up of 12 independently appointed individuals, with a broad range of experience within the Health & Social Care Sector, Business Development, Programme / Project Management to name just a few.
With a duty to act in the best interests of the charity, present and future beneficiaries, our Trustees have a broad range of experience to enable them to offer a unique and diverse level of expertise. Working together with the Executive Team, our Trustees leverage their knowledge, experience and reputation to support the future strategic direction of AFG.
Our Governance structure is based around our Executive Assurance Framework which operates below Board level to meet the changing needs of the organisation and the Board. Our Board of Trustees sits above our Executive Assurance Framework with dedicated Board Sub-Committees to manage the flow of information, assurance and accountability to and from the Board of Trustees.

In April 2020 we proudly launched our 5 Year Strategy for 2020 – 2025. Within this we articulated our strategic ambition to become the “The market leading provider of innovative and digitally-connected support for our people”.
We will deliver this ambition through achievement of our five strategic aims:
Our focus is to achieve our core charitable purpose and financial sustainability, by becoming the provider of choice for high quality outcomes and digitally-connected support models to our commissioners – Local Authorities and Clinical Commissioning Groups.

Our five-year strategy, will be underpinned and supported by our Annual Business Plans and Divisional Strategies for our Learning Disability (LD) and Mental Health (MH) offers
Within our Learning Disability offer we have identified clear focus areas for growth with compelling propositions based around improving people’s lives in the areas of (1) Young People in Transition (18 to 25); (2) Transforming Care; (3) New geographies; and (4) Private Payor Market
Within our Mental Health offer our ambition is to become the NHS / MHTs Provider of Choice for Community-integrated, Rehabilitation Services. This will include the introduction of a Hub and Spoke Locality Model of care. In this area our growth opportunities include (1) Building Partnerships with Acute Mental Health Providers; (2) Developing our TRC based Rehabilitation Offer; (3) Growing our Community Model; and (4) New Geographies.
