Who we are

Imagine, for a moment, going to your local library and finding that just seven out of a hundred books are in the format you can read.

Imagine you are a child excited about an author’s new book about a schoolboy wizard, and it’s all the kids at school can talk about, but following an overnight queue, you find it isn’t published for people like you.

Imagine being one of Britain’s more than 10 million children and adults who cannot read printed books. This is a “print disability”, and we – Calibre Audio, exist to support and help by providing a much-loved audiobook service for the visually impaired, those with dyslexia and other print-disabled people.

Our services started with cassettes of just ten books for 12 members, and 50 years on, we now have in excess of 16,500 titles for our 12,000 members.

For five decades, we have been on a mission to unlock the world of stories and learning for those who find reading printed books challenging.

During the last few years, we have invested heavily in improving services and making our organisation more efficient. These investments include new streaming services via the web, through partner apps, developing an Alexa Skill, additional content such as podcasts and book reviews, and developing our staff and board to improve our diversity.

Our vision is an inclusive society where everyone with a reading disability can enjoy accessible books.

We are in an exciting period of growth and development as a charity, and our new Trustee will join us at a fantastic time.

Throughout 2024, we’re running an exciting programme of activities to reflect on our past achievements as we celebrate our 50th anniversary — and we will launch our new strategy for the future to ensure we reach even more people who can benefit from our service.

We want to engage with younger members of our community and make as many books as possible available on as many platforms as possible, including other partner apps and smart speakers.

This is your opportunity to support us with long-term strategic thinking and planning and bring expertise in finance to the board.

Who we are looking for

We seek a strategic and visionary financially qualified leader who can support and challenge us. In the summer of 2025, our new Trustee will take over chairing our Finance Committee when our current Treasurer ends his term.

We are excited to invite first-time Trustees to the board; you do not need trustee or non-executive experience. We are keen to ensure our board reflects the people we work with and our society.

We need skilled, motivated, and brilliant people who can help us achieve our vision of an inclusive society where everyone with a reading disability can enjoy accessible books.

‘Calibre Audio has kept me in touch with reading. It has saved my mental health in many ways, when loneliness could have overcome me, keeping me company in many a quiet moment and helping me cope with my enforced blindness.’

You will attend four board meetings a year in Buckinghamshire with an option to attend virtually.

Initially, you will be a member of our Finance Committee, and when our current Treasurer ends their term in 2025, you will take over chairing our Finance Committee, which meets online for up to an hour every month.

We have an annual strategy away day once a year, and Trustees are invited to attend events throughout the year.

The overall time commitment, including reading board papers, preparation for board meetings and ad hoc advice and support to the executive team, is half a day a month (c.6 days per year), spread across the above commitments.

Welcome from the Chair of Trustees

Thank you for your interest in becoming a Trustee.

Calibre Audio is a national charity providing an audiobook and audio content service to anyone who is print-disabled.

Our members may be blind, partially sighted, have dyslexia or other learning difficulties or even be unable to hold a book. Whatever the reason for their struggle to access print, our vision is an inclusive society where everyone has access to audiobooks.

This pack outlines more about what we do and the impact of our work which I hope you find informative.

Our Board of Trustees is highly motivated, with a genuine commitment to use their business and life experience to help make a difference.

We are looking to appoint a new Trustee to take on the position of Finance Trustee, joining the board to support the charity as it moves into an exciting period of growth and development.

As we celebrate our 50th anniversary in 2024, it is more important

than ever that the charity is well-positioned to broaden its membership and maximise the opportunities presented by the ever-changing technology landscape.

To fulfil the position of Finance Trustee, we are looking for someone who can oversee the monitoring of the organisation’s finances on behalf of the board.

A personal connection to the experiences of our members (visual impairment, dyslexia and so on) is useful, but not essential. Other important skills include the ability to be visionary, think strategically and to influence key stakeholders, both within your sphere of expertise and more broadly. Strong communication skills, along with a collaborative approach and a commitment to our aims are also vital.

If you have the enthusiasm, skills and experience to help us drive growth and increase our impact, we would love to hear from you.

Howard Nead
Chair of Trustees

About us

Our charitable purpose

To enrich the life quality and opportunities for people of all age groups with a print disability by providing access to free audiobooks and content, and to raise awareness of related issues affecting our members.

Our mission statement

To improve the lives of people with a reading disability by being the leading provider of accessible audiobooks; delivering a personalised experience which supports inclusivity and well-being, whilst bringing stories and learning to life.

Our vision

An inclusive society where everyone with a reading disability can enjoy accessible books.

Who we help and how

1. Our 16,900 members, aged from 5 to 105, have a wide range of conditions such as a learning disability like dyslexia, a vision impairment or other conditions such as a head trauma or stroke or a physical dexterity problem such as MS or Parkinson’s.

2. Through collaborative partnerships with publishers, we continually add new titles to our collection, ensuring we provide an eclectic range of books that include bestsellers, new releases and the classics.

We pride ourselves on our truly unique collection of over 13,000 unabridged audiobooks, ranging over 70 categories, with both fiction and non-fiction titles.

3. Many of our books are recorded in-house and our team of over 80 volunteer narrators, all voice professionals, are the voices of Calibre. They record books that are not commercially available so that our members have the widest possible choice of titles.

4. We are constantly taking the opportunity to revitalise our technical offering to members, ensuring the greatest reach for our audiobooks across all age groups.

Through our innovative streaming site Play Calibre, and a collaborative partnership with Dolphin and their EasyReader app, our members have even greater freedom to download or stream our titles and listen on a variety of devices.

Our collection is also available through the Library App, Libby, and RealSAM technology on their pocket phones, and Google Nest and Alexa smart speakers so our members have a choice of listening when they want and how they want.

Accessibility information

We understand that different members of the community have different access needs and have made some modifications to the way we do business to accommodate people from diverse communities and abilities.

Our accessibility provisions include:

  • Step-free access to the building, all key meeting rooms and bathrooms, and an accessible workstation.
  • Accessibility dogs are welcome.
  • Papers and materials can be presented in different formats.
  • Working patterns and locations can be adjusted.

Applicants with a disability are invited to contact us in confidence at any point during the recruitment process to discuss steps that could be taken to overcome operational difficulties presented by the role, or if any adjustments or support are required regarding the recruitment process.
