Time is critical. We bring the emergency room to the scene and deliver life-saving critical care.  Our fleet of helicopters and rapid response vehicles can transport our doctors and paramedics to our patients 24/7, 365 days a year. We administer life-saving care at the side of a road, on a beach, in a park – wherever you need us.

About the Executive Director of Marketing and Communications

The Executive Director of Marketing and Communications will be a key member of the Air Ambulance Charity Kent Surrey Sussex (KSS) Senior Leadership Team (SLT), responsible for leading and developing our marketing and communication function and strategy to support the delivery of our strategic and cultural plan – The KSS Way.

This is a new role, introduced to elevate and maximise the impact of all our strategic marketing and communications activity. In the past few years we have strengthened our identity, both internally and externally, and your role will be to further embed our identity and marketing efforts as a cross-organisational function.

Working as part of the SLT, you will lead the effort to raise awareness and understanding of our work across our communities and beyond, with the aim of increasing intention to support and driving income, as well as further establishing our role as a sector leader.

You should be a proven marketing and communications expert, with proven experience in:

  • Leading teams
  • Managing income and expenditure budgets
  • Innovative, forward-thinking
  • Passion for identifying and creating sustainable opportunities
  • Managing ambiguity and leading through change

In addition, your analytical skills will ensure efforts are directed to those activities reaping the most impact and benefit.

You will also possess the people skills required to inspire colleagues, empower others, build strong bonds, and influence and inspire stakeholders.

Who we are looking for

We are searching for a highly experienced, creative, and innovative senior marketing and communications professional to lead a new directorate.

Suitable candidates will be natural leaders who want to work collaboratively to drive the organisation forward as they enter a period of growth.

We are looking for a deep understanding and passion for marketing and communications who understand the many different audiences of the charity.

Key areas of responsibility

Leadership and management duties:

  • Provide authentic, clear, and dynamic leadership to the Marketing and Communications Team to ensure a high-performing team, aligned to our values and culture
  • Support, coach, develop and inspire the Marketing and Communications Team to achieve critical success factors, holding the team accountable for results
  • Work as a key member of the SLT to inspire, support and motivate the broader team to achieve our purpose as an organisation

Strategic development and delivery:

  • Set the ambition and develop the strategy for marketing and communications which will elevate the prominence and value of marketing and communications to enable our growth and ensure we deliver on our strategic goals and objectives
  • Work in close and effective collaboration with the Individual Giving and Fundraising and Philanthropy Teams to support and augment our engagement with donors and prospective donors and maximise the impact of our individual giving, fundraising and philanthropic activities
  • Lead the development of the digital ecosystem (website, social channels, digital marketing tools, intranet, etc.) and turn digital into a source of value for KSS which supports individual giving, fundraising and philanthropic activities and the sharing and dissemination of our impact

Managing collaboration for mutual benefit:

  • Act as an ambassador for KSS, engaging with stakeholders in the community and beyond to build strong, strategic relationships to the benefit of KSS
  • Identify partnership opportunities that will enable the delivery of our strategy, and cultivate relationships to drive outcomes
  • Manage relationships with external partners and suppliers to drive performance and ensure effective delivery of outputs

Governance, monitoring, and reporting:

  • Underpin governance with well presented, timely reporting of statements and other relevant reports
  • Monitor best practice among close competitors and the HEMS and wider charity sector, to ensure that our approach to marketing and communications is coherent and delivering the required impact
  • Ensure the quality and robust measurement, monitoring and evaluation of all our communications and marketing activity including the development of key metrics to assess performance and progress, drive improvement

I am extremely proud and privileged to lead such an inspirational organisation. For over 30 years, KSS has provided world-leading pre-hospital emergency medicine to critically ill or injured patients wherever they are, whenever they need it.

We are an independent charity and rely almost entirely on the generosity and commitment of supporters. Everyone here, no matter their role, is truly people centred, values led and driven by our purpose of saving lives and ensuring the best possible outcome for our patients. We do this by continually innovating and improving the delivery of outstanding treatment and care to those who are critically ill or injured. Patients and their care are at the heart of everything we do.

We are immensely proud to have remained fully operational 24/7 during the pandemic whilst also extending our service to support the NHS, transferring critically ill patients between Intensive Care Units, as and when required.

We were delighted to receive an Outstanding rating from the Care Quality Commission in 2020 across all five of its inspection key lines of enquiry. We have also won a series of awards during the past two years; two Kent Charity Awards and two Charity Times Awards; open to national and regional charities and not-for-profit organisations from across the UK.

About the Organisation

Air Ambulance Charity Kent Surrey Sussex (KSS) is now in its 32nd year as an independent, world-leading, Air Ambulance charity at the forefront of Helicopter Emergency Medical Services (HEMS) with a strong reputation for excellence nationally and internationally.

Costing £15.4M annually to operate, our life-saving service is only possible thanks the incredible generosity of the communities we serve who contribute 88% of our total income. We serve a population of 4.8 million people plus an annual transient population of 90 million, making us one of the busiest Air Ambulances in the UK. Since our inception, we have operated over 35,000 missions. We operate out of Redhill Aerodrome and are headquartered in Rochester City Airport.

At KSS, we are people centred, purpose driven and values led. Our purpose of saving lives and ensuring the best possible patient outcomes drives us every minute of every day as we proudly provide 24/7 care, 365 days a year. Team KSS is a highly skilled, diverse, and highly professional multi-disciplinary team of doctors, paramedics, dispatchers, pilots, operational support staff and fundraisers as well as communications, marketing, governance, finance and HR support staff. We also rely on the support of over 170 dedicated volunteers as well as the support we receive from the wider community.

We deliver world-class, pre-hospital emergency medical treatment and care effectively taking the emergency department and highly skilled doctors and paramedics to the scene of critical medical emergencies. We utilise two state-of-the-art AW169 helicopters, supported by an MD902 helicopter, to transport patients to the most appropriate Major Trauma Centre or NHS hospital for their ongoing care. We also utilise our rapid response vehicles to take our team to the scene if our helicopters are unavailable.

Enabling the best possible outcomes for our patients drives us every day to improve the service we provide, to reach more patients, and to have more of an impact on our communities.

We have a research partnership with the University of Surrey, publishing 22 papers since 2016. Collaborating and sharing best practice with Air Ambulances around the world, we are at the forefront of HEMS research with a strong reputation for excellence, both nationally and internationally. Most recently, two studies by KSS have topped the ratings on Altmetrics, the online portal that monitors how much attention newly published research is receiving. Research into incidence of Hyperoxia amongst trauma patients receiving pre-hospital anaesthesia and a study scoping the pre-hospital management of penetrating neck injuries have been shared globally.
