The Head of Supporter Engagement plays a crucial, influential and leading role in ensuring that the Advancement strategy is supported. You will take full responsibility for the strategic development and delivery of programmes which maximise high-quality interactions with prospects, donors and volunteers, to build engagement with the College and ultimately increase philanthropic income. This work is of vital importance in order to meet the College’s Advancement goals and strategy.

Reporting to the Head of Institutional Events, you will lead a team of seven to develop a supporter engagement strategy and promote best practice in support of the College’s commitment to grow our external presence and enhance advancement activity. The post holder will work closely with colleagues across the Advancement Division, staff within academic departments and Support Services, particularly Registry, Communications and Campus Services.

You will be someone with a strong track record of developing and delivering creative and innovative methods of engaging with current and potential donors, as well as being an agile professional with excellent interpersonal and relationship management skills.

Someone with demonstrable experience of setting and delivering strategic aims developing a donor journey approach, which strengthens relationships with existing supporters, improves retention and optimises giving will be key. We have achieved a great deal, for example, the number of donors making gifts to Imperial has increased steadily in the last 10 years, with over 13,000 alumni and friends supporting the College in 2017-18. In the same year, our supporters generously contributed £59.2m towards research, education and campus development and the College secured a record number of gifts at the principal level.

The Head of Supporter Engagement plays a crucial, influential and leading role in ensuring that the Advancement strategy is supported. The post holder will lead the strategic development and delivery of programmes which maximise high-quality interactions with prospects, donors and volunteers, to build engagement with the College and ultimately increase philanthropic income. You would join the Advancement Operations section of the Division and be a key player within the team. The post holder will work closely with colleagues across the Advancement Division, staff within academic departments and Support Services, particularly Registry, Communications and Campus Services.

The Advancement Division

The Advancement Division brings together Fundraising, Events and the Alumni Relations Office. Advancement raises funds for scholarships, academic positions, research centres and capital projects, securing private financial support from those who are committed to our academic mission and building Imperial’s global reputation.

The Division oversees a wide programme of events that seek to expand the College’s reach, strengthen and enlarge our supporter base, increase philanthropic support and engage alumni, friends and other stakeholders in the life of the College. The Advancement team has expanded significantly during the past few years, and in June 2019 welcomed Michael Murphy as Vice-President (Advancement).

The Division is split into six teams:

The number of donors making gifts has increased steadily in the last 10 years, with over 13,000 alumni and friends supporting the College in 2017-18. Our supporters generously contributed £59.2m towards research, education and campus development and last year the College secured a record number of gifts at the principal level.

Developing relationships with supporters and alumni – a third of whom are based overseas – has been essential to Imperial’s fundraising success. Imperial has more than 205,000 alumni (143k contactable) forming an international community of outstanding scientists, engineers, medical professionals and business leaders.

It is a key goal of the College to build a stronger, more engaged and participatory alumni community and to provide excellent support. Achievements to date include the award-winning Imperial magazine, the alumni e-bulletin, the significantly improved benefits and services, including the Alumni Visitor Centre, and the national and international reunion events.
