We have a proud history of serving the further education and skills sector for 110 years. Born out of the East Midlands, but now a national group of further education charities and businesses, we have been many things since our inception in 1912. But, at our heart, we are a membership body for further education and skills providers. Our subsidiaries, Skills and Education Group Awards, Skills and Education Group Access and BIIAB, are therefore unique as the only awarding bodies and Access Validating Agency directly owned by the further education and skills sector.

As a Group, we do four things:

  1. Support the development of staff in the further education and skills sector through a range of professional development services
  2. Champion and support social mobility within the further education and skills sector
  3. Develop and award industry-relevant, high-quality qualifications, awards, accreditations and end-point assessments
  4. Act as a national leader in Access to Higher Education, awarding high-quality Access to HE Diplomas that enable learners to progress into further study and/or employment

In 2019, we formed our Foundation, which champions and supports the social impact the sector has on the life chances of the learners it serves. Since its inception, the trustees have committed 40 per cent of the surpluses we make to the work of the Foundation.

The main way in which the Foundation supports the sector is through the provision of grant funding for our member organisations to support their learners, helping them to overcome social barriers and reach their potential. Since the Foundation’s launch, we have awarded over 90 grants totalling almost £40,000.

Our trustees and executive leadership team are determined that the work we do for the sector, employers and learners will make a difference. We are committed to supporting our 60 members and 900 Centre’s to make a difference to the life chances of the tens of thousands of people our work affects.

This requires consideration to be given to any ‘reasonable adjustment or modification’ that could be made which would allow the person to suitably undertake the post.

Where an interview panel knows or believe that a candidate has a disability then the consideration of such a disability should take place once a provisional decision on appointment has been made. Only at that stage can discussion take place within the panel and with the candidate as to any impact their disability/perceived disability may have and any potential reasonable adjustments or modifications which might be required. In such circumstances the organisation may use the services of an Occupational Health provider in order for impartial professional advice to be gained.
