About East Coast College

East Coast College is based across three distinct campuses in the seaside towns of Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft. The College has a deep-rooted history of serving the people within these communities, dating back as far as 1874 when the very first art classes were delivered at what was then known as St John’s School, Lowestoft.

Across our three campuses – which include general further education bases in both towns, along with a dedicated sixth-form site in Lowestoft – we deliver education and training to over 2,700 learners each year.

Our learners are engaged in a broad, diverse range of provisions which is designed to ensure that we are always offering the best and most appropriate for our local communities and the employers that we partner with.

“We have an ambitious long-term plan up to 2030. I hope that through our search, we are able to find a new Governor who can help us plot a strategic route through to achieving these plans successfully.”

David Blake, Chair of Governors, East Coast College

In 2024 and beyond, our plan is to move into an ambitious period of growth. We will do this in a number of ways; through developing our curriculum; delivering student success, progression and wellbeing; supporting our people; and improving our business by continually investing in our facilities and technology.

Furthermore, as one of 16 colleges across England to benefit from the government’s FE Capital Transformation Fund, we are set to undertake the transformational redevelopment of our Great Yarmouth Campus which is planned for completion in 2026. We are also investing in the further development of our Lowestoft Campus; our new Civil Engineering Centre was launched this summer at Lound and we a proud to be a leading partner in a project to develop a new university centre in the centre of Great Yarmouth.

With ambitious plans for growth and expansion, coupled with the ever-present challenges faced by our sector, we now seek a new governor with financial expertise to join our board. We hope that this new addition to our board will help offer expertise and guidance whilst providing appropriate scrutiny and challenge to our senior leaders on key matters.

Peridot Partners and East Coast College are, together, committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and our client expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. The successful candidate will be subject to an enhanced DBS check and satisfactory references before any final offer can be made.

Role Description

Whilst our new governor would benefit from previous board experience, this is not essential as we will be offering a full induction, and also provide ongoing training and development opportunities.

It will be important for our new governor to have a genuine ability to build relationships and understand the boundaries between governance and senior leadership.

Time commitment

We anticipate that the successful candidate will need to be able to commit around 10 hours per month for meetings along with attendance at other ad-hoc events as required. It should also be noted that our board meetings take place during the working day, usually in the mornings.

“By joining our Board, you will quickly feel part of our governance family and you will have the freedom to comment, question and contribute. We are very collegiate, helpful and supportive but we do challenge, we debate, and we have an impact.”

David Blake, Chair of Governors, East Coast College.

We seek to appoint an experienced and qualified finance professional who has demonstrable experience of successfully working at a senior, strategic level during their career.

Applicants don’t need to have experience of working within the education sector. Your experience could have been gained across a range of sectors including areas such as the public sector and/or NHS, finance roles within local private businesses and employers, and from other commercial settings.

We are keen to receive applicants who will help us increase the diversity of thought across our board.

We seek to appoint a candidate who has experience working within financially-complex organisations so that you can use your expertise to ensure that as a board, we are asking appropriate questions and offering the appropriate challenges which will help ensure our financial future remains positive.

“This role is a great opportunity for a finance professional to grow and develop whilst leaving a positive mark on the College and its local communities.”

Wendy Stanger, Director of Governance, East Coast College.
