About the role

Role: Head of Development
Title: Dulwich Picture Gallery
Salary: Competitive + benefits
Location: Dulwich, SE21 (with flexible working)
Reports to: Deputy Director
Line reports: 3 direct reports

Dulwich Picture Gallery, founded in 1811, is the world’s first purpose-built public art gallery. We care for and display our outstanding collection of Old Master paintings within Sir John Soane’s pioneering architecture. As an independent gallery, we remain true to our founders’ purpose of presenting art ‘for the inspection of the publick’ by engaging as many people as possible, of all ages and backgrounds, through our innovative interpretation and dynamic programme.

We are entering an exciting phase, with several very important projects on the horizon. To help us achieve our goals, we are recruiting a Head of Development to lead on our fundraising and income generation strategy across major donor, trusts, corporate and membership, manage our fundraising team and contribute to the overall operation at Dulwich Picture Gallery as an active member of our Senior Leadership Team.

Who we're looking for

We are hoping to recruit a skilled major donor fundraiser with experience gained in the charity, higher education or arts sectors. A background working for an arts organisation is not vital; more important is a passion for the work of Dulwich Picture Gallery. It is also important for our Head of Development to be comfortable with change as we react to opportunities that arise, which may involve a change in strategy to achieve objectives. They must also be happy to positively challenge us with new ideas and innovation.

We are a friendly, open and collaborative organisation with a wonderful working culture and a passionate staff group, keen to learn and develop. Investing in people is at the heart of our organisation, and we look forward to supporting our new Head of Development to achieve great things with us.

Dear Applicant,

Thank you for your interest in the post of Head of Development at Dulwich Picture Gallery. We are delighted to be recruiting for the role at a pivotal point for the Gallery with several exciting and important new projects on the horizon.

Dulwich Picture Gallery, founded in 1811, is the world’s first purpose-built public art gallery. We care for and display our outstanding collection of Old Master paintings within Sir John Soane’s pioneering architecture. As an independent gallery, we remain true our founders’ purpose of presenting art ‘for the inspection of the publick’ while engaging as many people as possible, of all ages and backgrounds, through our creative programme.

We are engaged in a continuous process of planning, delivery, evaluation and development in order to unlock the Gallery’s unique potential: our location, art and people. Our mission is underpinned by our vision to secure the Gallery’s future as a welcoming, vibrant hub where you – everybody – can Find Yourself in Art.

At the moment, we are showing the critically-acclaimed Cutting Edge exhibition and visitors are enjoying The Colour Palace Pavilion and our Nahoko Kojima installation. In early October we open Rembrandt’s Light curated by Dulwich Picture Gallery’s Jennifer Scott (Sackler Director) and Helen Hillyard (Assistant Curator).

We are seeking an experienced major donor fundraiser, passionate about arts/heritage. This postholder does not need to come from an arts background but will need a passion for the work of Dulwich Picture Gallery.

The new Head of Development will help us achieve our goals and play a significant leadership role in fundraising and income generation across major donor, trusts, corporates and membership. They will manage a team of three and will play a key part in the Gallery’s wider operation as a member of the Senior Leadership Team. This is both a strategic and a hands-on role. The Head of Development will have gravitas and the confidence to build relationships with senior stakeholders; someone who can bring people with them on decisions.

The culture at the Gallery is warm and collaborative and we are looking for a team player to join us, ideally with a good sense of fun too!

You will report directly to the Deputy Director, Chantelle Culshaw, who returns from maternity leave in March 2020. In the interim, Lucy Perman is covering the Deputy Director role.

We hope you will be interested in the role and look forward to receiving your application. Please continue through this recruitment site and then discuss the position with Simon Callaghan at Peridot Partners, our recruitment consultants.

Best wishes,
