The Altus Education Partnership in Rochdale is seeking a Director of Governance and Compliance to support the Multi Academy Trust Board and three Local Academy Councils. This is an incredible opportunity for an expert in Governance to join our values driven Trust at the beginning of its growth phase and to support inspiring education for the young people we serve.
The priority for the Director of Governance and Compliance is to ensure that all layers of Altus Education Partnership’s governance arrangements operate as a coherent whole. This is a strategic leadership position responsible for consistency through monitoring compliance with regulatory requirements, whilst consolidating local arrangements that provide robust challenge and support for academies.
The postholder will be the lead in the Trust for ensuring high standards of governance including the smooth and efficient administration of the Trust Board and its Committees, as well as advising the Chair of the Board on governance process and practice. They will oversee compliance with regulatory and legislative requirements, ensure the Board’s decisions are acted upon, are in accordance with the Memorandum and Articles of Association, and continue to provide public benefit.
At Academy Council level, the Director will be proactive and creative in identifying where governance is working well but also where interventions may be required. They will build strong relationships with Head Teachers, Chairs, Trustees and Governors, ensuring governance at each Academy is fully ‘Ofsted-ready’.
As the Trust’s Governance and Policy expert, the postholder will design and roll-out a professional governor training programme, and also lead on governor recruitment and retention, with a licence to be innovative in attracting high calibre volunteers. This is a role with several dual elements: the need to provide strategic leadership as well as operational management; to be innovative and creative in developing system-leading governance for Altus, whilst also ensuring statutory and regulatory requirements continue to be met; to be an expert on the theory and approach to governance with the ability to implement and safeguard high standards of challenge and support; and to be equally comfortable operating at central as well as local level whilst ensuring all elements of governance combine to support driving improvements in standards across Altus.
We are looking for an experienced and knowledgeable governance expert that will ensure consistency and compliance across the Trust in line with DfE and RSC expectations.
You will be a collegiate and supportive member of the team who is highly organised and with exceptional administration and communication skills. Knowledge of multi academy trusts and of sitting on a board would be preferable.
There is room for flexibility around the working hours and location although there is an expectation to work from the Trust office in Rochdale a minimum of one day a week.

Thank you for your interest in the role of Director of Governance & Compliance at Altus Education Partnership
The Trust was formed in April 2017. It is a relatively new multi-academy trust formed from Rochdale Sixth Form College and dedicated to the improvement of the education of young people in the borough of Rochdale.
The sixth form college opened in 2010 to address the significant underachievement in A Level performance in the borough. Since then, it has raised achievement in the area dramatically and become nationally recognised: the college is Ofsted outstanding, and regularly one of the highest performing colleges in the country according to the DfE’s performance tables and national achievement rate tables. In June 2021 it was named Sixth Form College of the Year in the TES Awards.
The Trust’s mission arose from, and builds upon the successes and values of the sixth form college. In short, our mission is to create a family of academies from early years to 18 that enables our young people to progress to an aspirational career, a fulfilling life and to make a positive contribution to society.
Thank you for your interest in the role of Board Director of Governance & Compliance at Altus Education Partnership.
We are a relatively new Trust that evolved from the independent corporate board which governed Rochdale Sixth Form College. The college was established in 2008, and opened its doors to 450 local students in 2010. It is now a 16-19 academy with more than 1800 students from the local area. Our trustees, staff and students and the local community are very proud of the college; it is a very special place to learn and work.
Our Trust is now evolving and taking on new institutions. In the next few months our new free school, the Edgar Wood Academy will open its doors to a new generation of students. A large local secondary school is in the advanced stages of discussions to join the Trust. We will move very quickly from a Trust with one academy to one with three; an exciting time, but a challenging one too.
The role of Director of Governance & Compliance will be a crucial one in navigating these changes, and establishing and running effective governance systems and processes that will accommodate the Trust and our academies as we grow.
Our multi-academy trust was formed in April 2017 by the governing body of the Ofsted rated Outstanding Rochdale Sixth Form College. The Altus Education Partnership is dedicated to the improvement of education in the borough and to high standards and outcomes for our community.
The college is recognised nationally as a centre of excellence and is Ofsted is one of the highest performing colleges in the country according to the DfE’s performance tables and national achievement rate tables. We are at the beginning of our growth phase with two school joining the MAT.
Edgar Wood Academy opens with Year Seven in September 2021 in temporary accommodation at Hopwood Hall College, before moving to new state of the art buildings in Middleton. Opening a new school offers our staff a unique opportunity to shape and develop a curriculum which will capture students’ interests, provoke serious thinking and develop their intellectual curiosity.
The curriculum will be culturally relevant to our students and will serve to develop social attitudes and behaviours, celebrate British values and ensure that students have an inclusive approach to their local and global communities. The Trust is also pleased to welcome Kingsway Park High School (Ofsted rated Good) to the Altus family of schools providing 11-16 education to over 1200 students on Rochdale.
The values of the Partnership are:
Altus Education Partnership has always been, and very much remains, proud of its inclusive approach. Altus Education Partnership is known as a key player on the Rochdale educational scene, as a major contributor to HE progression and one of a few institutions with an ‘outstanding’ Ofsted rating.
With experience of forming and leading education partnerships across the Borough, and with a pedagogic approach to development of high-quality curriculum which will be translated to other levels of education across the organisation, the Partnership will continue to lead meaningful collaboration across Rochdale from early years to post-18.
