Newlife is the UK's largest charitable provider of disability equipment for children. We are recruiting an ambitious, high-calibre Director of Fundraising who will strategically lead our fundraising across a full range of income streams, helping us to continue to be there for disabled and terminally ill young people, and their families.
At Newlife we believe that disabled children should get the better future they deserve. For 30 years we have provided disabled children and their families with specialist protective equipment, growing to become the biggest charitable provider of essential specialist equipment for disabled children in the UK and the only one offering an emergency response, delivering items directly to family homes within just 72 hours. We also run a free, national nurse-staffed helpline.
As well as providing specialist equipment we campaign strongly for better rights for disabled children and their families. Our campaigning is informed by academic research into the lived experience and needs of disabled children and their families, funded and commissioned by Newlife.
Our work is made possible by two main income streams, generating annual turnover of c. £11m p.a. The first is our successful discount clothing retail operation which provides valuable CSR-focused recycling benefits for our network of high-street brand retail partners, as well as employment for many disabled people. Fundraising is our other vital income stream, focused primarily on trust and major donor fundraising, child-focused media appeals and a highly successful corporate partnership with River island. With the right leadership and investment we believe there is opportunity to significantly grow the latter to help meet the increasing demands on our services.
Reports to: CEO

The Director of Fundraising is a pivotal new appointment for Newlife. The Director will join our senior leadership team and be responsible for delivering a transformation in our fundraising activity, performance and positioning, with the full support of the CEO, the senior leadership team and the trustee board.
This will include leadership and management of the fundraising team and its programmes and growth, development and implementation of the fundraising strategy, and financial management. This is a hands-on role and the Director will lead by example, undertaking as well as directing the fundraising, and managing relationships with a pool of corporate partners, major donors and other key stakeholders. The role would suit an experienced fundraising leader with a track record in growing charitable income from high value sources.
Thank you for your interest in becoming Newlife’s new Director of Fundraising. This is our 30th year, so it is a great time to join us as we establish a bold new mission to change the lives of disabled children and support their families.
That is why this new role is so important, together we really will change lives and that is such a great feeling. So, if at this point in your life you are looking to apply your skills and see them deliver real social impact across the UK, I know we can offer you that fulfilment.
Newlife provides more equipment direct to family’s homes than any other UK charity. Our motivation was born from the experiences of myself and Leonard Lewis as parents of children with disabilities, driving us to become co-founders of Newlife in 1991. What we do and the way we do things is pretty unique and that’s not just our services. It includes the way we have so far raised most of our income – through hundreds of corporate partnerships, offering a CSR and environmental protection service, used by major brands and retailers in the UK and Europe.
People often describe us as ‘authentic’, ‘passionate’ and say we have a very ‘can do attitude’. Our culture uses hierarchy where it is needed, but we are much more ‘clan like’- where success is about what we achieve together, for those we serve.
Our new bold mission will also include a refreshed narrative about the work we achieve and the board of Trustees is committed to delivering real change. This is why we need a Director of Fundraising, who has the experience to lead and generate the income needed to deliver this mission.
I am sure you will be asking, how good is Newlife at fundraising right now and what will I have to build on? As CEO I can say truthfully that historically, fundraising has not had prominence in the organisation, because most of the funds we have needed have been delivered by our corporate trading activity. But we have a small team that has been successfully raising funds, mainly from trusts and foundations, and during Covid we increased fundraising income through significant Lottery bids and other major donors. We can see the potential to scale-up significantly, and to reposition fundraising at the heart of Newlife’s operations. We are committed to succeeding with this. Demand has doubled for our unique Emergency Equipment Service and across the UK the plight of children and families is worsening every day. Right now almost 70% of children are living without the equipment they need to protect their health, help them overcome challenges and receive great care. Also the number of disabled children continues to grow, with 1.1 million UK children affected.
The needs of these children, young people and families simply can’t continue to be ignored, leading to systemic failure – generation after generation.
Your skills, experience, influence and commitment will help Newlife make positive change a reality. Together, our ambition and mission will deliver practical help in the short-term and long-term. You will join members of the Senior Leadership Team and Operational Leadership Team, building relationships and optimising opportunities. We have a fundraising strategy in place, crafted with the support of fundraising consultants, More Partnership, which reinforces the confidence we have in our fundraising potential but as Director you will own and shape the way forward to influence this over the next 3-5 years. So we are seeking a committed person who will see this through and help us build for the future, while impacting precious lives, every single day.
If all this sounds interesting, we look forward to receiving your application.
Mrs. Sheila Brown OBE
Our Nurses support families, our researchers work to improve children’s health, our dedicated team campaign for a fairer deal and our volunteers and supporters know that 100% of every penny they donate or fundraise will be used for equipment to change a child’s life.
Childhood cancers, birth defects, accidents, diseases and infections can all cause our precious babies, children, and young people to face lifelong challenges. It happens to dozens of children and their families every day.
Newlife exists because if it was your child, you would want the best for them and that’s what we are working for every day.
There are now around one million disabled and terminally ill children in the UK. Thousands of them rely on Newlife to get the equipment they need, equipment that has often been refused by the statutory services or the delays in provision mean that the child will suffer unnecessarily. Newlife runs the only fast track equipment services in the UK helping those children in urgent need.
