Join Born Free Foundation as their new Director of Fundraising and drive value and impact across the full breadth of income streams with a team dedicated to protecting the lives of animals, both in the wild and in captivity.

  • Location: Hybrid/Horsham, West Sussex
  • Salary: £70,000 - £75,000
  • Closing date: CLOSED FOR APPLICATIONS

Who we are

Founded in 1984 by Dame Virginia McKenna, Bill Travers and their son Will Travers, Born Free Foundation is a leading wildlife charity. We are passionate about the welfare of animals, both in the wild and in captivity and we exist to stop the exploitation and suffering of individual animals. We work tirelessly to ensure all animals are treated with the compassion and respect they deserve in order to live their lives according to their needs.

We seek to have a positive impact on animals in the wild and protect their ecosystems in perpetuity, for their own intrinsic value and for the critical roles they play within the natural world.

Our work

Conservation

We protect threatened species and their natural habitats and find Compassionate Conservation solutions so that people and wildlife can live together peacefully.

Rescue & Care

We have been involved in the rescue and rehabilitation of countless individual wild animals, saving them from a life of suffering in often appalling captive conditions.

Anti-captivity

We work across the world to stop captive animal suffering, challenge the captive animal industry, call for better legislation and protection, and phase out zoos.

Education

Working in the UK, Kenya, Ethiopia and South Africa, our educational activities inspire people, young and old, to respect wildlife and the natural world.

Climate Change and Biodiversity Loss

We are committed to reducing our impact on the environment and our contribution to global warming and addressing both climate change and biodiversity loss through our work.

Policy

We lobby decision-makers to ensure the best possible outcome for wildlife, including the illegal trade in wildlife, trophy hunting, canned hunting, and much more.

On 15th December 2022, Born Free hosted a public discussion to explore innovative and humane alternatives to trophy hunting, at London’s iconic Royal Geographical Society.

Born Free goes beyond trophy hunting.

About the role

As one of the most senior posts at Born Free and as part of the executive management team, the Director of Fundraising reports directly to the Managing Director and will work closely with the board of trustees to promote the interests of Born Free both nationally, and internationally.

The post holder will be responsible for all of Born Free’s fundraising and drive the strategy and direction of the charity’s income generation by maintaining and developing a range of new, sustainable income streams. This person will play a critical role in building on the strong network of supports and partners and will play both a strategic and operational leadership role across the organisation.

The role is remote, with the occasional presence at the Born Free office in Horsham, West Sussex for SMT and team meetings.

Who are we looking for?

We are looking for an experienced senior fundraiser who has the proven ability to build, manage and develop key stakeholder, partnership, and donor relationships. This role will be responsible for all areas of fundraising, so we are looking for someone with a breadth of experience across a range of income streams.

The successful candidate will motivate, inspire and empower the fundraising team to deliver against annual budgets and to develop sustainable income streams with the ambition to achieve an annual income of £10m in three years.

Most importantly, this person will share the passion for the welfare of animals and the values of Born Free and their mission.

Key responsibilities:

  • Act as a member of both the Born Free executive management team and the senior management team – supporting and contributing to all aspects of the delivery of professional management of the charity.
  • Lead the fundraising team, ensuring effective working within the team and compliance with key processes, such as KPI setting and performance management and reviews
  • Devise, implement and develop strategies for agile fundraising and for managing and monitoring performance against agreed budgets and business plans.
  • Build a strong network of supporters, partners and advisors to help influence, support and inform the strategic fundraising plan and ongoing development of sustainable income for the charity.
  • Lead on external relations and stewardship with key supporters: build on and extend existing networks, developing new and maintaining existing long-term relationships with high-net-worth and high-profile individuals and/or corporate partnerships.
  • Develop strategies and approaches to work in partnership with other organisations where our income generation/strategic performance could be maximised
