Director of Finance & Resources (Part-time) TaxAid

Join TaxAid at a pivotal moment of growth, partnering with an ambitious new CEO to strengthen sustainability, shape strategy and build a stronger, more resilient and more impactful organisation.

  • Location: Remote with some occasional travel
  • Salary: £65,000 FTE
  • Closing date: 9 a.m. Wednesday 23rd September

Who we are

TaxAid provides a vital lifeline for people lost in the UK tax system and unable to afford professional help.

Every year, TaxAid helps 18,000 people facing complex and distressing situations. Many are dealing not only with tax problems but also with debt, poor mental health, homelessness or sudden financial hardship. When they have nowhere else to turn, TaxAid provides free, independent and expert advice that helps them regain control and move forward.

While TaxAid provides expert tax advice, our Director of Finance & Resources does not need a tax background.

A pivotal moment for TaxAid

TaxAid is seeking an ambitious and values-driven Director of Finance & Resources to lead the organisation into its next phase of development and growth.

This is an exciting time to join the charity. TaxAid has recently undergone significant change, including a merger with a sister organisation, the development of a new beneficiary strategy, a refreshed branding and a new CEO.

These strong foundations create a solid platform for the next Director of Finance & Resources to build upon. The Board and new CEO are ambitious to increase the number of people supported each year and ensure TaxAid reaches more people who currently struggle with tax problems.

About the role

Please note: The successful candidate will start at 3 days per week, with scope to move into 4 days a week as TaxAid grows.

As Director of Finance & Resources, you will provide strategic leadership across finance, technology, risk and infrastructure, combining commercial insight with hands-on oversight to support organisational growth and resilience.

Key priorities will include:

  • Partnering closely with the CEO to develop financial strategy, scenario modelling and long-term plans that support TaxAid’s growth ambitions.
  • Strengthening financial sustainability, reserves planning and diversified income streams.
  • Building effective partnerships with fundraising colleagues to ensure investment decisions are supported by robust financial analysis and forecasting.
  • Overseeing outsourced finance and technology providers, ensuring strong performance, controls, value for money and organisational resilience.
  • Leading organisational risk management, governance, compliance and assurance for trustees and senior leaders.
  • Driving infrastructure and systems improvements, helping create a scalable organisation equipped for future growth and change.

You will receive an annual leave entitlement of 28 days per calendar year, plus 3 days at Christmas and statutory holidays. We offer a stakeholder pension scheme, and we contribute a minimum of 4%; employees must match this contribution if they wish to join and remain in the scheme.

Who we are looking for

We’re seeking an ambitious and collaborative finance leader who enjoys combining strategic thinking with practical delivery. You will be excited by growth, comfortable with change and motivated by helping a charity increase its impact for people in need.

Our ideal candidate brings:

  • A strong track record of senior financial leadership, providing trusted advice to CEOs, trustees and leadership teams. As a qualified accountant, you will bring the credibility, judgement and commercial insight needed to influence strategic decisions and support organisational growth.
  • Experience of developing financial sustainability through effective business planning, scenario modelling, reserves management and income growth initiatives. You understand how to balance ambition with financial prudence and can help leaders make informed investment choices.
  • The ability to work collaboratively with fundraising and income generation colleagues, translating financial information into practical insights that support growth. You enjoy being a genuine business partner and recognise the role finance plays in enabling organisational success.
  • Experience overseeing outsourced services, suppliers and operational infrastructure. You do not need to be a technical specialist in every area, but you know how to assess risk, set expectations, challenge constructively and secure high-quality delivery from external partners.
  • A pragmatic and adaptable leadership style. You are as comfortable discussing strategy with trustees as you are rolling up your sleeves to improve systems, support organisational change and help build an even bigger, better and bolder TaxAid.

Above all, you will be motivated by the opportunity to help more people access the support they need at moments of real vulnerability.

Why join TaxAid?

TaxAid is widely respected across the tax profession, government and the voluntary sector. The organisation benefits from strong partnerships, a committed network of volunteers and ambassadors, and a team dedicated to helping people through difficult financial moments.

As Director of Finance & Resources, you will be more than a technical finance leader. You will act as a trusted strategic partner to the CEO, helping to shape growth plans, evaluate future opportunities and build a stronger, more resilient organisation.

Working across finance, technology and infrastructure, you will have genuine influence on TaxAid’s future direction while remaining close enough to the operation to see the direct impact of your work.

For an ambitious leader who enjoys combining strategic thinking with hands-on delivery, this is a chance to help transform an already respected charity into an even stronger, more resilient and more impactful organisation.

Welcome from the Chair

Welcome to TaxAid!

We are a registered charity that, for over 30 years, has provided a lifeline for people lost in the tax system, often in crisis, who can’t afford to pay for help and have nowhere else to turn.

And while we help them untangle the tax system, many of them face mental or other health issues, homelessness and debt.

The challenges and opportunities we face are common with many not-for-profits, but what we do as a charity is unique.

We are looking for a Director of Finance and Resources who will work with our incoming CEO, Leon Ward (see the video introduction at the bottom of this letter from Leon), to provide strategic financial leadership and organisational assurance across finance, technology, risk and core infrastructure.

TaxAid is a well-respected charity which partners with some of the UK’s largest firms and organisations, as well as having a network of senior ambassadors and relationships.

This has been a year of great change. We merged with our sister charity, hired new members of the senior team, undertook a rebrand, developed a plan for a new beneficiary strategy, are reviewing our approach to fundraising and are bringing in a new CEO.

So, with these strong foundations, this is an exciting time for the charity and an opportunity for you to help shape and deliver our future.

If you feel you have the vision, passion and experience to help secure our future as the UK’s leading tax charity, then please apply to join us.

Best wishes,

Kevin Nicholson

About us

What we do

TaxAid supports people who need help understanding their tax, untangling the tax problems that threaten their financial stability. We highlight the needs of our beneficiaries to those responsible for making the decisions that affect them and campaign to simplify the systems that baffle.

We’re working towards a world where tax is easier for people to face and no one is left to navigate it alone.

How we do it

Through our helpline, we listen, understand and provide a solution tailored to individual circumstances. No matter how big or small the issues are, our approach is the same for everyone.

We know tax can be complicated, but we’re here to make it less confusing. We give clarity and practical support to help people understand tax, both through our one-to-one support and our online information and guides. We campaign to simplify the systems that baffle and take the issues that matter to the people who decide how tax works.

We keep on top of a changing world and improve how we engage people who have different needs – making sure no one is left to face tax problems alone.

Our history

For over 30 years, we’ve resolved tax issues for people who can’t afford to pay for help and have nowhere else to turn, building the bridge between complex tax problems and life-changing solutions. In July 2025, TaxAid and Tax Help for Older People merged to create the UK’s single strongest voice for tax support.

With our combined expertise, we are not just growing, we are evolving strategically to help more people in ways that work for them.

Our annual reports

As TaxAid and Tax Help for Older People merged in July 2025, we are sharing the recent accounts from both entities that can be found below.

Case study

Despite not owning a computer and struggling to fully understand her tax return forms, Tess diligently prepared her own tax returns for several years.

Overpaying tax

She had an annual income of less than £10,000, which was made up of her state pension, a small additional pension, and some self-employment income. However, she had also been including housing benefits, of which she received £3,000 per year, not realising that this income is not taxable and should not have been included.

Reaching out to TaxAid

Tess’s friend informed her that she had been completing her tax returns incorrectly, so Tess reached out to TaxAid. On investigation, it turned out that she had made this same mistake on two further tax returns.

A simple fix with big repercussions

We contacted HMRC and requested an amendment to her latest tax return, but unfortunately, the two other returns were out of time to be resubmitted. We submitted an overpayment relief claim.

This was accepted by HMRC and Tess received a refund for £1,064.63. She now understands not to include housing benefits on her tax returns and can accurately complete these going forward. It’s a simple fix, but one that has saved Tess from increased financial hardship.

She now has received a refund of her tax overpayment and will be paying less in future.
