Director of Engagement Peace Hospice Care

Peace Hospice Care is seeking an experienced community engagement, marketing and communications specialist to lead their marketing and engagement team on an initial 12-month fixed term contract with the view to being made permanent. This role will provide leadership to the marketing and engagement team and be a key member of the executive team to shape and deliver the 5-year strategic plan.

  • Location: Watford (minimum 60% office based)
  • Salary: £60,000

Our mission is to be the best provider of services for those with life-limiting illnesses in our community, and to support their families and carers too.

We support people at the end of their life but the vast majority of our work is about empowering patients to achieve the best quality of life possible.

We do that with our work in the community but, also, at the Hospice itself.

We provide free, specialist care for those with life-limiting illnesses in Hertfordshire 365 days a year.


Purpose of the Role

This new role will be a pivotal member of the executive team and you will play a key role in shaping the future at Peace Hospice Care. This role will have overall responsibility for our marketing and engagement strategy and will lead on our community engagement priorities. The new Director of Engagement will also be overseeing the development and delivery of our marketing and digital strategy, working closely with the Head of Marketing and Communications to ensure successful delivery.

You will lead, direct and manage the work of a marketing and engagement team of 7, to enhance our presence in the local community with clear branding, promotion and marketing strategies. You will also be working closely with teams across the hospice to ensure that marketing and engagement is ultilised in all areas, and that we stay ahead of the curve.

Key responsibilities

Strategic Leadership

  • As a member of the Executive team, work with Executive colleagues and senior managers to deliver the agreed annual work plan with specific responsibility on project management of new business opportunities
  • Ensuring that an ongoing marketing and branding strategy exists which reflects the wider organisation strategic ambitions
  • Building and developing relationships with our local stakeholders
  • Raising awareness of the work and profile of Peace Hospice Care within the community we serve,
  • Working with Executive Director colleagues to plan and deliver outreach capability that extends Peace Hospice Care services across its area of operation and if appropriate beyond
  • Working with the Director of Income Generation and Director of Patient Services to develop a plan that bridges the gap between income generation and patient services. With an aim to enhance:
    • Our marketing promotional messages and branding, utilising patient stories and current service developments.
    • Our, user-friendly promotional and service focused factual information
    • Clear branding presence and charity messages within our patient services.
  • Leading on the development and delivery of the PHC digital strategy
  • Responsible for developing a robust-promotions work plan that create new relationship opportunities for our fundraising and patient services teams.


  • To be a proactive member of the Executive team contributing and providing direction in supporting the wider organisations operational management decisions.
  • To provide leadership and day to day management for all Marketing & Engagement Service developments
  • To oversee the organisation’s website and intranet development and design
  • To line manage the Community engagement team
  • To ensure the agreed Widening Access and Equality, Diversity and Inclusion business objectives and KPI’s are achieved and reported
  • To develop a relationship with the Trustees and Advisors, taking an active role in contributing to the wider Hospice Integrated Governance framework, attending and preparing the necessary reports for the Board and sub committees.
