The Royal College of Emergency Medicine (RCEM) are recruiting for a director to lead a newly created Engagement and External Affairs Directorate, as they continue to grow and make a difference to the future of emergency medicine

  • Location: Hybrid- office based at least 5 working days a month
  • Salary: £93,700

About the role

The new Director of Engagement and External Affairs will lead the Policy, Media Relations, and Membership Engagement functions, developing and implementing our communications strategy and working closely with other departments to improve collaboration.

You will look at new ways of engaging members and devise and implement measurement instruments to look at effectiveness and highlight and elevate the value of product offerings.

You will also lead and develop our policy and public affairs work to build RCEM’s reputation and position us as a thought leader and policy influencer in management and leadership amongst our key audiences including members, decision-makers in government, the NHS, and the media.

As Director of Engagement and External Affairs, you will sit on our Executive Leadership Team and be accountable to the CEO and Board of External Affairs and Communications. You will work closely with the Board and President to continually identify opportunities to develop strong relationships with key Government and industry stakeholders, to ensure we are working to consistently leverage our thought leadership and proven value work to influence and shape public policy.

You will work closely with the CEO, Director of Education and Director of Corporate Services to develop a customer-focused agenda, implementing strong internal communications and processes to improve cross-organisational efficiencies and knowledge sharing.

You will lead a high-performing team of 23 with 5 direct reports, mentoring and encouraging them to be innovative, fostering a culture of trust with accountability and look to grow the directorate with exceptional talent, which will continue to enhance the organisation. You will ensure there is an agile and practical approach to meet short and long-term needs and resources are managed effectively and responsibly through a culture of continuous improvement which delivers value for money and quality service standards.

Who we are looking for

The Director of Engagement and External Affairs will be an experienced communicator and policy specialist, who has demonstratable experience in successfully shaping and implementing compelling communications and external affairs.

Ideally, you will have experience in engaging members or customers and have a commercial acumen to look at new products and service offerings which will engage, support, and develop members.

As the Director of Engagement and External Affairs, you will have a track record in building and managing stakeholder networks across government, medical education, and the media, and having an impact on brand awareness and policy outcomes for key audiences.

You will have a progressive and digital-first approach, be able to continually evaluate the effectiveness of communications against core objectives, and look to identify areas of improvement.

You will have an open and collaborative working approach, with a team-orientated, low ego, and flexible approach. As a manager, you will have a proven ability to build, mentor, and develop teams with a down-to-earth, “sleeves-rolled-up” and hard-working leadership style.

The Director of Engagement and External Affairs role will require you to have excellent communication skills, and a natural ability to engage, enthuse and build strong, influential relations with diverse stakeholder networks. You will be confident in providing clear, balanced advice at a senior board level and look to build an open relationship with the Board and Committees.

This College is the professional body for emergency medicine, which is the specialism that is practiced in Emergency Departments in the NHS, these were formerly known as A&E Departments.  We are a fast growing fast paced organisation and mirror the can do attitude of the medical specialty we support.

We offer a suite of professional examinations in the UK and in centres abroad, support for doctors and other health professionals in training.  Part of our work includes delivering high quality continuing professional development through elearning and events, lobbying governments for the development of the specialty of emergency medicine through engaging with politicians and other stakeholders and seeking to influence the national news agenda for healthcare policy.

About the Royal College of Emergency Medicine

The Royal College of Emergency Medicine works to ensure high-quality care for patients by setting and monitoring standards of care in emergency departments, as well as providing expert guidance and advice on policy to relevant bodies on matters relating to Emergency Medicine.

The College aims to advance education and research in Emergency Medicine. It is responsible for setting standards of training and administering examinations in Emergency Medicine for the award of Fellowship and Membership of the College, as well as recommending trainees for CCT in Emergency Medicine.

In February 2015 the College was granted the title Royal, having previously been known as The College of Emergency Medicine after a Royal Charter was gained in February 2008.

The College now numbers over 10,000 Fellows and Members registered internationally and works to represent both its members and the interests of patients.

The College supports and takes an active interest in the work of the European Society for Emergency Medicine and the International Federation for Emergency Medicine.
