About the Role

Lifetime Training recently acquired Intequal to sustainably develop digital and IT apprenticeships, training and skills as part of our offer. This is a significant investment for us as we recognise the need for this type of skills development across the country.  With people needing to change jobs because of the global health pandemic and the need to upskill and reskill people across the UK, the potential for this business within Lifetime Training is significant.

As the new Director of Digital and IT Education for our recently acquired digital and IT business unit, you will be the leading director and most senior and accountable staff member with this specialist remit. Reporting to our Chief Commercial Officer, we need you to quickly assimilate the quality of the business unit and develop a commercial strategy which provides opportunity for rapid growth which is both impactful and sustainable. There is a great deal of support available to you, to embed you into our organisation and provide you with a framework for success, though we also intend you give you the autonomy to lead your business area – as a sector specialist – in the way you feel it is best to do so.

At Lifetime Training we aim to transform the workplaces of tomorrow. We see digital and IT skills as an essential part of everyday work for most people. With this in mind, and when considering the ONS suggests anywhere between 8-10% of adults in the UK lack basic digital skills, there is a great deal of work to be done and many opportunities to realise, in partnership with public and private sector partners. We welcome your experience of driving organisational growth and success gained in a sector relevant to this business unit, and need you to apply your enterprising and commercial mind-set and join us on this journey of change, expansion and achievement.

This role is not focused on short-term wins. Instead, we require the successful candidate to develop a long-term strategy for growth aligned with continued high-quality learning, teaching and skills delivery.

In February 2020, Ofsted rated Intequal as being a ‘Good’ provider and we strive to continue providing a world-class experience for our learners, apprentices and employer partners and aim for outstanding. As such, we need the person appointed to this post to possess the necessary competence and confidence to oversee continued and improved quality assurance and improvement, with the support of experts in your team.

Managing a team of around 40 expert employees, through two direct reports, you will be comfortable and experienced in setting stretching targets for your team and supporting them to achieve them. These KPIs are likely to be commercially and quality driven, though we also wish to focus on ensuring our new digital and IT specialist team further integrate into the Lifetime Training family.

Currently operating with 400 starters a year, the aim is to grow the provision to reach the level of our other successful business areas which currently have up to 8,000 starts a year. Working closely with the Operations Directors of these other business units, you will receive support alongside access to Lifetime Training’s extensive employer partner network to assist in the provision’s growth over the next 12 months, with insight provided from partners around what large employers and SMEs expect from us.

We will provide you with opportunities to grow and develop your own leadership team, involve you in senior and strategic decision and support you to develop a strategy to achieve greater market share in this specialist sector area.

Who we are looking for

As Director of Digital and IT Education, we need a senior leader with credibility and knowledge of the digital and IT sector, and the associated industries within it. Our training programmes will help create the digital and IT workforce of the future and help solve significant talent gaps for employers.

Therefore, you should understand the key issues surrounding recruitment and skills development in the sector, as well as the motivations for employers to utilise apprenticeships to develop and solve their talent and succession strategies. It would be highly beneficial if you had experience with Digital & IT apprenticeships in the UK.

Likewise, we also need you to know who else is operating in this specialist area of delivery, and develop our offer to ensure it is attractive, marketable, relevant, and competitive – we do not have any ambitions to merely be like any other provider and intend to have something unique to offer to the market. The growth of this area within Lifetime Training will not come at the expense of high-quality delivery and an inspirational curriculum. As such, you must understand the curriculum necessary to develop the learners within digital and IT.

As the most senior leader within this new business unit of ours, it is important you have experience of inspiring leadership at a senior level and through middle leaders. In addition to this experience, you will bring experience of having previously applied your pioneering approach to achieving rapid and sustainable commercial growth. We expect you to have excellent networking and relationship building skills to extend the reach of the digital and IT offering to both large employers and SMEs, and so expect you to bring a network of people and contacts with you.

You will have a strategic approach to growth and be motivated by the opportunity to take this new business area from a solid foundation to a market leading provider in digital and IT apprenticeships, skills and training, whilst also being prepared to roll your sleeves up to work in the business when required.

With increased earnings expected, of between 3% and 10%, for people acquiring new digital skills and the UK Digital Strategy 2017 outlining the Government’s aim to become a world leader in serving its citizens online, there is a basic expectation that you truly believe in the power of our product and how it can transform both people’s lives and our economy. Your passion for this specialist area will act as a motivator for your teams and you will embed and maintain the values and standards of Lifetime Training to ensure people love what they do and feel as passionate as you do about their work.

Intequal is a trusted partner to several blue-chip employers including Vodafone, Virgin Media and Telent. In addition, Intequal has extensive experience working with employers across various sectors to source and develop their future digital workforce. Intequal are a Microsoft Silver Learning Partner and part of the Microsoft Apprenticeship Connector network.

Intequal delivers Level 3 and 4 apprenticeships in IT infrastructure, digital marketing, data analytics, software development and testing, network engineering and technical sales.
