Director of Clinical Services St Richard’s Hospice

Shape the future development of hospice care, champion clinical excellence and lead services that make a lasting difference to people and families across Worcestershire.

  • Location: Worcester
  • Salary: £90,000 - £100,000

St Richard’s Hospice is a leading independent hospice charity supporting people and families across Worcestershire. We are proud of the quality of our care and ambitious about how our services continue to evolve for the future.

We are now seeking an exceptional Director of Clinical Services to join our executive team and provide strategic and operational leadership across all clinical, medical and care services.

This newly created role offers a significant opportunity to influence the future direction of St Richard’s. We are looking for a credible and compassionate senior clinical leader with experience of leading complex, multidisciplinary healthcare services, delivering transformation and developing high-performing teams.

Visible, collaborative and courageous, you will bring fresh thinking, build strong relationships and help us continue to deliver the very best care and support for our community.

Who we are

St Richard’s Hospice serves communities across Worcestershire, providing expert care and support across hospice, community and well-being settings.

As a values-led organisation, we are committed to compassionate care, clinical excellence, partnership working and continuous improvement. At the heart of everything we do is a simple belief: people are more than their illness. We see the person, not just the patient, understanding what matters to each individual, respecting their choices, and supporting their physical, emotional, social, and spiritual needs.

We are proud to be rated ‘Outstanding’ by the Care Quality Commission, reflecting our commitment to exceptional, person-centred care for every person and family we support.

About the role

As Director of Clinical Services, you will provide strategic and operational leadership across all clinical, medical and care services, with responsibility for ensuring the highest standards of quality, safety and clinical practice.

Reporting to the Chief Executive, you will shape the future of clinical services, championing excellence while ensuring the voices of patients, families and carers remain at the heart of decision-making. You will provide leadership across quality, governance, safeguarding, workforce and regulatory compliance, while building strong partnerships across the NHS, commissioners and wider community to develop integrated and sustainable models of care.

This is an opportunity to make a significant and lasting impact: developing services for the future, strengthening clinical leadership and helping St Richard’s realise its long-term ambitions.

Who we are looking for

We are looking for a credible, compassionate and experienced clinical leader who can combine strategic thinking with visible, authentic leadership.

You will bring a strong track record of leading multidisciplinary healthcare services, navigating complexity and delivering meaningful transformation and improvement.

The successful candidate will also have:

  • Significant senior clinical leadership experience across complex, multidisciplinary healthcare services.
  • A strong track record of leading service transformation, workforce planning and continuous improvement, with the ability to assess what is working well and where services need to evolve.
  • Strong knowledge of clinical governance, quality, safeguarding, risk and regulatory requirements, with an unwavering commitment to safe, high-quality care.
  • The ability to lead and develop senior clinical leaders, building capability, confidence and accountability through coaching, support and constructive challenge.
  • Strategic insight alongside a visible, collaborative and hands-on leadership style, with the ability to build trusted relationships across clinical teams, the Executive Team, Board and external partners.
  • The courage and curiosity to challenge established ways of working, bring fresh thinking and translate strategy into meaningful impact for patients, families and staff.

Experience of hospice or palliative care would be advantageous but is not essential. Above all, we are seeking an exceptional clinical leader who shares our values, brings curiosity and ambition and is excited by the opportunity to help shape the next chapter for St Richard’s.

Welcome from the Chief Executive

Dear Candidate,

Thank you for your interest in becoming our new Director of Clinical Services at St Richard’s Hospice.

This is an important appointment for us and an exciting opportunity to join St Richard’s at a significant point in our development. We are incredibly proud of the care we provide to people and families across Worcestershire and of our Outstanding CQC rating, but we are equally ambitious about how we continue to evolve our services to meet changing needs.

At the heart of St Richard’s is a simple belief that people are more than their illness. We see the person, not just the patient, and this commitment to compassionate, person-centred care runs through everything we do.

As our new Director of Clinical Services, you will play a critical role in ensuring we protect what is special about St Richard’s while continuing to challenge ourselves about how we can do even better.

We have undergone significant transformation in recent years and this newly created executive role provides an opportunity to take a broad view across all our clinical, medical and care services. We are looking for someone who can bring strong clinical leadership and fresh thinking; who will work alongside our teams to understand what is working well, where we can improve and how our services and workforce need to evolve for the future.

Just as importantly, we are looking for a visible, compassionate and courageous leader. Someone who will build trusted relationships, develop and empower our clinical leaders and colleagues, and ensure the voices of patients, families and carers remain central to our decisions. You will also be an important member of our executive team, contributing to the wider leadership and future direction of the Hospice and strengthening our relationships with partners across the health and care system.

There is a great deal to be proud of at St Richard’s and significant opportunity ahead. If you are excited by the prospect of helping us shape the next chapter of our clinical services and making a lasting difference to the people and communities we serve, we would be delighted to hear from you.

With best wishes,

Mike Wilkerson
Chief Executive
