Director of Carer Support | Carers UK

Carers UK is looking for a new Director of Carer Support to lead them through an exciting period of growth, help deliver an ambitious new strategy and be responsible for developing new ways of supporting carers, especially those typically harder to reach.

  • Location: London

About the role

The pandemic has really shone a light on what Britain’s unpaid carers do, with as many as one in four of us now providing care. We believe we have a burning platform to bring about change, as well as provide carers with what they need.

The Director of Carer Support will lead the team to ensure delivery of an ambitious new strategy, and will also be responsible for developing new ways of supporting carers, especially those typically harder to reach. This role has the potential to change carers’ lives forever.

About us

Carers UK is the national membership charity for the 6.5 million people in the UK who are unpaid carers – and whose care is valued at a staggering £132 billion per year. We are seeking an exceptional candidate who is looking for an exciting opportunity to effect lasting change.

Carers UK’s mission is simple: in whatever ways caring affects you and your family, we are here. We are here with expert advice, information and support. We connect carers so that no one has to care or feel alone. We are committed to innovating to find new ways to reach and support carers. We are tenacious campaigners, and together with our members, we strive for lasting change for carers.

Our vision is of a society that respects, values and supports carers for the huge contribution we make to our families and communities. As the only national membership charity for unpaid carers with over 26,000 members we have created a supportive community of carers. And their voices mean that we are highly respected as experts on the issues facing carers and in the provision of advice, information and support.

We are seeking an exceptional candidate who is looking for an exciting opportunity to effect lasting change.

About the role

With increasing demand for our information, support and advice; a growing membership, and increasing impact through volunteering, we need a Director to lead our work and improve and develop the support we provide for unpaid carers at this crucial time.

The Director of Carer Support will lead the team to ensure delivery of an ambitious new strategy, and will also be responsible for developing new ways of supporting carers, especially those typically harder to reach. This role has the potential to change carers’ lives forever.

You will be a highly motivated leader with a proven track record of leading teams and delivering complex beneficiary-focused and funded projects on time, to budget and to target. Collaborative in approach and with excellent communication skills, you will provide strategic leadership to the Carer Support team and, as a member of the Senior Management Team of Carers UK, contribute to our overall strategy and impact.

Welcome from Helen Walker, Chief Executive

Thank you for your interest in Carers UK and the role of Director of Carer Support. This is a hugely exciting time for our organisation, and the role is critical to our continued success. Despite the economic and societal challenges that we face as a sector and as a nation, Carers UK are about to launch a new Direction of Travel: Vision 2025, which will take us to our 60th anniversary – we felt a direction of travel was more meaningful in the current climate than a fixed five-year strategy. This last year has shone a light on unpaid carers like never before as they have taken the brunt of the pandemic caring for those most vulnerable while respite centres were closed and health and social care services were under extraordinary pressure. We believe that we have a burning platform to make fundamental change for unpaid carers like never before and that is why it is such an exciting time to take on this pivotal role in our Senior Management Team.

Our new strategy focusses on three pillars: Equality, Support and Recognition, our new Director of Carer Support will drive forward our ambitions through our membership, volunteering and advice and information services. Carers UK, through its members and professional networks, has the ability to understand and research the changing landscape for carers and identify solutions to support carers in the future. We have long-established relationships with national and local governments across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. We work with policy makers, employers, health and social care providers, and other organisations with caring fundamental to their existence, to influence them to affect positive, lasting change.

I am pleased to enclose an application pack, which sets out the particular skills and experience we require from our Director of Carer Support. It contains all the information you need about the appointment process and what the role involves.

We are looking for someone who is:

  • Passionate about Carers UK and can inspire their team to deliver new and innovative ways to support carers as we move towards our pivotal 60th anniversary in 2025.
  • Be a key member of the Senior Management team working collaboratively across the organisation ensuring support is delivered across all four nations. Able to proactively represent the charity, engaging a wide range of stakeholders.

If you have any questions about the enclosed information, please email our consultant at Peridot Partners. This is a fantastic opportunity and I very much look forward to meeting with you.

Best wishes,

Helen
