About the role

As the Director of Apprenticeships and Employer Based Training at City of Bristol College, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of education and workforce development. Leading a team of dedicated professionals, your primary responsibility will be to develop and implement a comprehensive curriculum delivery strategy for apprenticeships and employer-based training programs.

Your efforts will directly impact the aspirations and career pathways of learners, fostering a culture of excellence in teaching, learning and assessment. By forging strong partnerships with industry stakeholders, and ensuring alignment with local economic priorities, you will drive innovation and growth in provision, ultimately equipping students with the skills and knowledge they need to thrive in the workforce.

With a focus on quality improvement and student support, you will lead by example, inspiring your team to deliver outstanding outcomes and positively impacting the lives of individuals and the broader community.

Who we are looking for

The ideal candidate should have a proven track record in managing training programs, with strong leadership abilities to drive excellence in teaching and learning. You will apply your experience in strategic planning to meet workforce needs and use effective communication skills to foster partnerships. You will also demonstrate a commitment to maintaining regulatory compliance while driving innovation in education and training provision.

Applicants should possess a diverse set of qualities, skills, and experiences, including:

  • Proven Track Record: Demonstrate success in managing training programs across various levels, from Entry Level to Level 6, in collaboration with employers, awarding bodies and university partners.
  • Strong Leadership: Lead and motivate a team of Heads of Department to ensure high-quality teaching, learning and assessment.
  • Strategic Planning: Display experience in developing and implementing strategic plans, particularly in the realm of apprenticeships, to meet local and regional workforce needs.
  • Effective Communication: Apply excellent communication and interpersonal skills to foster relationships with employers and industry stakeholders.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Possess an understanding of quality assurance processes and regulatory requirements to maintain compliance and uphold standards.
  • Innovative Thinking: Show adaptability, innovation and a commitment to driving continuous improvement in education and training provision.

This is an extremely exciting time to join the senior leadership team at our dynamic and ambitious college. In the last year, we have delivered an ESFA financial health rating of Good, Ofsted grading of Good, received £10.5 million of DfE capital money to invest in our four sites, are firmly on our journey of culture change, and are poised to deliver on our promise of educational excellence for Bristol and the wider West of England region.

This role is suited to someone who is hungry for change, understands quality, has high standards, and recognises the significant impact of further education and skills on the economy of a region. We have a new focus at City of Bristol College, and we are looking for someone to join us to help deliver this important work for our region.

There will be a launch of a new, boldly ambitious strategy in July 2024, along with a rebrand and a new Chair of Governors, and this brings many opportunities.

In our region, there are many exciting projects that this role will be part of, by leading the delivery of high-quality skills that will support economic growth by thinking differently and working with employers to deliver skills that meet their needs both now and in the future.

About City of Bristol College

City of Bristol College is one of the South West’s largest further education providers, educating nearly a third of Bristol’s 16–18-year-olds. We enrol a large proportion of school leavers from Bristol’s most disadvantaged communities and the great majority of school leavers with high needs, and we offer routes back into education for young people who have dropped out of school. With four major locations encompassing six centres spread out across the city, we are able to provide courses within easy reach of most local people.

Our offering encompasses A Levels, technical and vocational courses and apprenticeships for school leavers, as well as full-time and part-time adult courses and higher education. Our University centre offers students flexible ways to study degree-level programmes, access to HE courses, professional qualifications and higher apprenticeships. We are proud to work with our University partners, including UWE Bristol, to offer foundation degree programmes in arts, health and social care and education and training disciplines.
