Development Media International (DMI) is seeking a highly skilled Director of Business Development to lead their fundraising from institutional donors and trusts. Managing a team of three, this is an initial 16-month maternity contract with significant likelihood of permanent employment as the organisation continues to expand.

  • Location: London (N1), UK (currently remote working due to Covid-19)
  • Salary: £90,000 per annum, plus 5% pension contribution and private health insurance

About Development Media International (DMI)

DMI creates evidence-based behaviour change campaigns to improve health and save lives. We deliver campaigns at scale to maximise impact and cost-effectiveness.

Origins:

DMI was set up in 2005 by Roy Head, who has spent his career pushing the limits of what mass media can achieve in post-conflict and low-income countries. Roy worked at the BBC and the UN before setting up the health division of the BBC World Service Trust in 1997, and leading award-winning media campaigns in 16 countries. Roy set up DMI to bring scientific rigour to mass media campaigning, by modelling and testing how many lives can be saved, and acting on this.

Objectives:

We run radio, television and mobile campaigns to change behaviours and improve lives in developing countries. We generate evidence of impact using robust evaluations, and scale up the most effective campaigns to reach many millions of people. Our focus areas include child survival, nutrition, family planning and early childhood development. We are the first organisation to demonstrate through two randomized controlled trials (RCTs), that mass media interventions can change behaviours.

Key responsibilities:

  • Securing significant long-term funding for DMI, through a combination of follow-on funding from existing donors and new income. Strategic priorities in the medium term are to maintain a project portfolio in existing countries of operation and expand our work in West Africa.
  • Overseeing, and contributing to, the process of proposal preparation. This will include identifying opportunities, developing, writing, and submitting proposals. These proposals may be unsolicited proposals, or they may be responses to tender opportunities offered by institutional donors such as USAID or FCDO.
  • Contributing to the design of projects, bringing together staff, resources and DMI’s operating methods in a form that represents the most cost-effective approach to a given problem.
  • Maintaining and developing strong relationships with prospective donors and potential partners (NGOs and other organisations) in advance of funding opportunities.
  • Providing dynamic, inspirational management to the strategy and development team in the UK, and liaising successfully with relevant staff in DMI’s country offices about business development opportunities.

About you:

  • Demonstrable, and substantial, success at securing significant (£100K upwards) and resilient funding from a variety of sources, ideally including trusts/foundations and institutional donors
  • Deep experience of proposal writing, and managing business development systems and processes, including developing and maintaining a funding pipeline.
  • Experience of writing funding proposals for DFID and USAID would be highly desirable.
  • Substantial knowledge of the international development field. The ideal candidate will have worked directly for an NGO/implementing agency or funding agency, but we will consider outstanding candidates from the private sector or consultancy fields who can demonstrate a familiarity with international development and its objectives.
