We're looking for a new Development Lead to help drive forward ambitious income generation plans.
UnLtd, the Foundation for Social Entrepreneurs, is looking for a new Development Lead to help drive forward their ambitious income generation plans.
UnLtd is a charity that finds, funds and supports social entrepreneurs – people with vision, drive and passion who are coming up with solutions that can change the world for the better. Put very simply, these are people who create a business idea with the aim of solving a social problem or effecting social change. As their businesses are generating revenue, they can build their enterprises to become sustainable and grow to help many, many more people that need their support.
In the last few years, UnLtd has focused their support on social entrepreneurs who are creating Access to Employment; those who are developing Solutions for an Ageing Society and those helping to build more Resilient Communities – UnLtd’s impact areas. During the first phases of work in these impact areas, UnLtd has learnt more about what it will take to support social entrepreneurs to grow their ventures and make them sustainable.
UnLtd is now entering an exciting phase to develop our work in these impact areas further. Taking all the findings to date, UnLtd believes it will be able to support social entrepreneurs to help close the disability employment gap, increase healthy life expectancy for older people and transform more of the communities in which we live and work.
UnLtd is fortunate to have a £150m endowment that funds just over half our work and in the last three years we have successfully raised £10m to fund the rest of it. We now need to raise another £7m over the next three years to help realise its ambitions for social entrepreneurs working in these impact areas and more. To help them bring their ideas to life, grow their ideas and scale them so ultimately social entrepreneurs can ‘go mainstream’ – where government, business and public all recognise the value they create for society.
We’re recruiting an experienced Development Lead with a track record of building new partnerships, cultivating them and converting them. You’ll need to drive the fundraising strategy and activity, making sure we’re all making the best of our contacts, bringing in new prospects and using all our energy to convert the best of these to income generating partnerships. You’ll have one eye on managing the income forecast and pipeline and the other on getting out to build and convert prospects.
We’d love to hear from you if you share our goals and ambition. Please continue through this website to access the job description, and then make contact with Peridot Partners, our recruitment consultants, to hear more and discuss your fit for this wonderful role:
I am delighted that you are considering joining UnLtd, the Foundation for Social Entrepreneurs, as our new Development Lead.
As you will see from our website, UnLtd is a charity that finds, funds and supports social entrepreneurs – people with vision, drive and passion who are coming up with solutions that can change the world for the better. Some ask what do we mean by ‘social entrepreneurs’? Well, put very simply, these are people who create a business idea with the aim of solving a social problem or effecting social change. As their businesses are generating revenue, they can build their enterprises to become sustainable and grow to help many, many more people that need their support.
The social problems they are looking to solve range from creating livelihoods for people with autism to health and wellbeing classes for residents of care homes. Take Mona and Shaz Shah who created Harry Specters Chocolates to provide meaningful employment for adults with autism. Mona was inspired to start her social enterprise after realising there were no real job opportunities for her son Ash. Or Stephen Addison who started Box Up Crime after losing too many friends to gangs and knife crime.
We often see this with some of the most successful social entrepreneurs, they build on their life experience. It’s what drives them. Coupled with their bravery, determination and resilience – they have the makings of social leaders. And with the UK at a time of profound upheaval – politically, economically and socially – we need people like Stephen and Mona to step up and support our most marginalised communities and individuals.
But these exceptional ‘social superheroes’ face many barriers when trying to get their ideas off the ground or trying to scale their impact once they are up and running. They often don’t know where to start with their ideas. Who will believe in them? Who will support them? How will they support themselves financially? Where can they meet others like them?
That’s where UnLtd comes in. Since its inception in 2002, UnLtd has supported nearly 20,000 social entrepreneurs to help their aspirations come to life. We’ve supported them with advice, mentoring, training and connections. In that time, we have also given out over £73m to those social entrepreneurs in the form of grants, loans and investments to help their enterprises get off the ground, grow and really scale.
Crucially, that funding and support has gone on to help transform the communities we live and work in. On average, each social entrepreneur we support has a positive impact on the lives of 727 people [i]. That means, last year [ii], 330,000 people’s lives were improved as a result of the social entrepreneurs we backed.
We know we are doing something right, but we want to do more. Who wouldn’t when you can help to improve people’s lives and our society as a whole? So, one of our key objectives over the coming years is to increase our income in order to fund more projects aimed at making a better, fairer society in which to live.
UnLtd is fortunate to have an endowment from the Millennium Awards Trust that currently generates around £4-5m annually. But our current work costs around double that. So, we raise the balance from a range of sources including corporate support from UBS, trusts and foundations from the likes of National Communities Lottery Fund (formerly Big Lottery) and Comic Relief as well as many smaller trusts and family foundations. We also generate around £250k from Major Donors each year with aspirations to double that year on year.
As an experienced fundraiser, you will know that the fundraising environment has got tougher over the last few years. But we think at UnLtd we have quite a unique proposition where we are asking funders to invest their time, money and belief in something where the impact keeps growing. We also offer donors a number of ways to partner or give to UnLtd through philanthropy, re-payable grants or investment capital. We know it works as we’ve raised £10m in the last three years.
Secondly, we have some exciting propositions for funders interested in particular impact areas to get involved in. From creating Access to Employment for those who struggle to find work because of their challenging circumstances to finding Solutions for an Ageing Society to enjoy a more positive later life.
So, the last ingredient we need is an excellent fundraising team. We already have an active CEO with an incredible track record in raising six figure gifts. We have a Development Manager who knows everything there is to know about trusts and foundations. And then there’s me who hasn’t done too bad with the odd major corporate and major donor. Now we need you.
We are recruiting an experienced Development Lead with a track record of building new partnerships, cultivating them and converting them. You’ll need to drive the fundraising strategy and activity, making sure we are all making the best of our contacts, bringing in new prospects and using all our energy to convert the best of these to income generating partnerships. You’ll have one eye on managing the income forecast and pipeline and the other on getting out to build and convert your own prospects. It will all be second nature to you because you’ll have had success delivering five and six-figure partnerships already in either a charity or commercial sector context.
Reporting to me, you will implement our high value fundraising strategy with a personal focus on corporate partnerships and major donors. This is a senior role at UnLtd, and I am looking for the very highest calibre partnerships fundraiser who can influence internally and externally, working closely with me, the Development and Partnerships teams as well as our CEO and my fellow Directors.
Our cause and track record resonate powerfully with funders and key stakeholders. We have a platform from which we can change the UK for the better – building resilient communities, building access to employment and enabling people to age well.
I’d love to hear from you if you share our goals and ambition. Please continue through this website to access the job description, and then make contact with Peridot Partners, our recruitment consultants, to hear more and discuss your fit for this wonderful role.
I look forward to meeting you.
With best wishes,
Director of Partnerships & Influence
