Dear Candidate,

West London College FE recruitment for Deputy Principal

Thank you for your interest in the role of Deputy Principal at Ealing, Hammersmith and West London College (branded as West London College).

Since the FE Commissioner’s initial assessment visit in August 2018, West London College has achieved a great deal of progress in a relatively short period of time. This has led to high confidence from the intervention agencies in the College’s leadership team, as well as making significant and important progress in strengthening our financial position. By the end of 2019/20, we will have broadly achieved a financial break even position and will have seen a second year of significant income growth. Our staffing cost to income ratio will also be broadly around the sector norm of 65%.

We are a relatively new, ambitious and talented senior leadership team that passionately believes there is much unrealised potential at West London College. We are determined to transform ourselves into one of the leading colleges in the capital.

We are now seeking an exceptional individual to join our senior leadership team to help us to shape, deliver and secure an exciting future for our students, staff, employers and communities. You will be a suitably skilled and experienced person who shares our vision and ambition to be the leading college in West London for technical and vocational education and skills training. You will be highly effective in your pursuit for the continuous improvement of standards, student outcomes, organisational effectiveness and curriculum efficiency. This role will provide a capable and ambitious leader with significant career prospects and the opportunity to make a major contribution to the educational, economic and employment landscape of the nation’s capital city.

We have an exciting estates strategy that has already seen the opening of two brand new and industry-standard construction centres, located in prime positions in West London, poised to take advantage of major infrastructure developments. We have also been awarded the prestigious and coveted Mayor’s Construction Academy Scheme kitemark – one of only seven hubs in the capital.

Our estates strategy will see the demolition of our Hammersmith and Fulham College campus, to be replaced with a brand new, purpose-built and state-of-the-art facility. We will continue to invest in our campuses at Ealing and Southall to ensure we are providing high-quality learning environments for our learners, employers and communities.

The West London area is a safe and vibrant part of the capital, known for its culture and the arts. It is a major business hub for the UK economy, and the base for a number of nationally important and global blue-chip companies including: Heathrow Airport, Wembley, BBC, White City, Westfield (the biggest shopping mall in Europe), Olympia, Coca Cola and Walt Disney, to name but a few.

If you are excited by these prospects and think there is a good fit between our requirements and your abilities and ambition, then we would love to hear from you!

Yours sincerely,

Karen Redhead
CEO and Principal

Committed to meeting the needs of its students and stakeholders, through collaboration and innovation across its curriculum and student services.

Providing education programmes for young people, adults, provision for students with high needs and apprenticeships

In 2017, the College was graded ‘Good’ by Ofsted and internal self-assessment assessment continues to report a realistic view of the quality of teaching, learning and assessment.

The College provides education programmes for young people, adults, provision for students who have high needs and apprenticeships. Courses are offered in a wide range of subject sector areas.

Approximately three quarters of students are from a black or minority ethnic heritage. In 2018-19, there were over 26,000 learners enrolled on courses, of which the majority were adults in part-time study. Students who attend full-time are primarily on 16-to-19 study programmes in vocational areas.

The College’s progression

In 2018/19, there were approximately 9,000 adult students, 1,850 16-to-19 year olds, 220 students with high needs and 460 apprentices in learning. Approximately 4,500 adults studied in provision subcontracted by the College, including over 1,200 enrolments onto adult distance learning programmes.

The apprenticeships offer nine different sector subject areas, with three sectors making up the majority of all apprenticeships – Construction, Health & Social Care and Business Management. Approximately two thirds of Apprentices are aged 19 and over.

The College also has a small cohort of higher education students, which it is intending to grow.

News of the historic financial challenges has been widely reported. Though, since Karen Redhead’s appointment as CEO, substantial progress has been made. An organisational recovery plan is in place with key milestones being met alongside an rapidly improving financial picture.

West London College is open, welcoming and supportive. Their commitment to equality and diversity underpins everything they do.

The College intends to build on its emerging specialisms, particularly around construction and the built environment – a unique partnership between Berkeley and the West London Construction Academy has been awarded the Mayors’ Construction Academy kite-mark for the quality of provision.

Through the positive relationships with the two major London boroughs, increased 14-16 and High Needs student numbers are highly likely due to the exceptional student experience provided.
