Commercial Director Mountbatten Hospice Group

The Mountbatten Hospice Group seeks a dedicated senior fundraiser to join as Commercial Director to make a significant contribution to ensuring sustainable and high-value income streams across fundraising and retail activities.

  • Location: Hampshire, with travel to Isle of Wight
  • Salary: £85,490
  • Closing date: 9 a.m. Monday 22nd July

Who we are

At Mountbatten, our mission is to promote and provide good care and support for those people living with, affected by, or curious about death, dying and bereavement.

As a charity, we provide a wide range of services at our two hospices in Newport, Isle of Wight and Southampton, Hampshire. We also provide a significant proportion of our services within the community to patients and their families at home.

To succeed in our ambitions, we need to generate over two-thirds of our running costs through fundraising and commercial activities. The importance of these income streams increases year-on-year, as NHS and other public funding become more challenging.

You will have responsibility for developing and implementing a long-term business development and income generation strategy for Mountbatten.

About the role

We seek a dedicated senior fundraiser or business leader to join us as Commercial Director to significantly contribute to ensuring sustainable and high-value income streams across fundraising and retail activities.

You’ll drive new revenue opportunities through commercial ventures by developing innovative business development plans, supported by start-up investment from internal funding.

You will also work collaboratively with our communications and marketing team, ensuring these effectively support our income strategy.

As a key member of the Senior Leadership Team, you will work closely with the Chief Executive, Senior Management Team and Board of Trustees — and will bring motivational leadership and senior experience to the teams within your remit.

Your responsibilities will include overseeing and managing our fundraising and communication teams, and our Retail Trading division, which encompasses 18 stores, our Isle of Wight hospice store, and 2 warehouses across south Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.

Who we are looking for

  • Demonstrable experience and successful track record in a senior role within business development, income generation and charitable fundraising.
  • Extensive knowledge of techniques and disciplines within fundraising and income generation, ideally within a charity / not for profit sector.
  • Significant experience in financial / budget management.
  • Significant experience in successfully developing new commercial business plans and securing investment to achieve income growth and deliver return on investment.
  • Experience leading on stakeholder engagement and developing successful partnerships at a senior level.
  • Motivational leadership that energises others to achieve objectives.

Join us and make a lasting impact through innovative and sustainable income generation.

Welcome from the CEO

Thank you for your interest in working for Mountbatten Hospice Group.

Over the past eight years, Mountbatten has become a leader in its field across the UK and beyond. It has also grown considerably, most notably with Mountbatten Isle of Wight (formally Earl Mountbatten Hospice) and Mountbatten Hampshire (formally Countess Mountbatten Hospice) coming together in 2019 to form the Mountbatten Hospice Group.

Mountbatten is now the largest hospice and end-of-life care provider across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, providing hospice, end-of-life care and bereavement support to around 4,000 people on any day within their own homes — this shows a 250% increase in those benefitting from our support over the past three years.

We exist to ensure that no person who is facing death, dying or bereavement is ever ignored or left alone.

There are three main challenges that we are facing:

  1. The growth in need for what we do. We anticipate a further growth of 40% over the coming years, mainly due to the growing older population.
  2. We need enough human and financial resource to meet this growth in need, so workforce planning and commercial/fundraising development are critical.
  3. No-one wants to talk about what we do and there is a reluctance to put plans in place for a future which people do not wish to think about.

Our current five-year strategy, which runs from 2020-2025, sets out how we are going to address these issues through developing our new and unique model of care.

Dying is no longer a short-term event for most people, and many people will die over years rather than weeks or months. It is essential that what we offer addresses the needs of our local populations, as we strongly believe that we are the custodians of this organisation and are working on their behalf.

Mountbatten’s teams also work hard. We are driven by a cause which, at the heart, has an ambition to make the biggest difference possible and we are not ashamed of wanting to be the best we can be.

There is much to be done, and the modern hospice movement, even in Britain, has not yet reached its full holistic potential.

At this important point in our development, we are also facing a changing landscape, with fewer resources each year from the NHS and other public funding streams. Together with continuing to grow our fundraising, Mountbatten recognises there is a need to be innovative and bold in seeking out new commercial streams of income, to continue to achieve our vision and support everyone who needs our help.

Therefore, we seek someone to join our team with the commercial and fundraising skills, ambition and innovation to help us sustain and further grow our offer in the future.

Our Mountbatten values are core to everything we do as a team, and, if you share our passion and commitment to achieve our vision, regardless of your previous experience and background, then we very much look forward to hearing from you.
