Co-opted Governor (SEND & Safeguarding) Hereward College

Become a co-opted governor at Hereward College, a specialist further education college dedicated to improving the life opportunities of young people with special educational needs and disabilities.

  • Location: Coventry, West Midlands
  • Salary: Non-remunerated
  • Closing date: Rolling applications

To ensure that our SLT and wider staff team are supported in their continuous mission to deliver high-quality, individualised provision for our learners, support their families and retain our outstanding national reputation, we seek to appoint a co-opted governor with SEND & safeguarding expertise to join a sub-committee of our Board. This individual will offer their experience as a sector expert whilst also potentially providing support in relation to longer-term succession planning on our main Corporation Board.

Who we are

Set on a single campus in the Tile Hill area to the west of Coventry, Hereward College is a further education college which has been providing specialist education to learners with learning difficulties and disabilities since 1972.

Unlike many other colleges within the FE sector, we have a very specialist focus. Due to this, we have what could best be described as a national catchment and currently provide education and training to around 320 young people aged 16+ and employ 230 staff. Whilst our learners may have a physical disability, a communication disorder or other learning difficulty, the one thing they will all have in common is expert support from a team of dedicated staff who are passionate about specialist education and improving opportunities for young people. The College was inspected by Ofsted earlier this year and received a grade of Good. Within their inspection and subsequent report, Ofsted highlighted that our high needs provision and the behaviour and attitudes of our learners was Outstanding. You can read more about our inspection here.

“We have a really special atmosphere across the organisation. New staff, new governors and all of our visitors to the college, they all tell me how struck they are by the atmosphere and the way this place makes them feel.”

Paul Cook, Principal, Hereward College

Our learners study across a range of curriculum pathways through a breadth of levels and the college also provides valuable, additional opportunities such as access to work experience, career support and the chance to develop skills for independent living. We also manage a supported internship programme with a range of local partners, enabling our young people to gain experience in the workplace within a supported environment.

“What’s special about Hereward? It’s the uniqueness and the learners that we attract. Being able to observe their development and their individual journeys. You won’t see that journey anywhere else.”

Natalie Williams, current governor.

This new committee member will offer additional insight and professional expertise to support and challenge our decision-making processes and ensure that as a college we are continuing to provide the best service possible to the communities which we serve.

“We are a solid community here. In joining Hereward, you will get a real personal experience of making a big difference.”

Simon Crick, current governor

Who are we looking for?

There is a golden thread that runs throughout our board, and that is a passion for improving the life chances and opportunities of our learners. This ethos is something that all candidates will need to possess.

Given the varied, yet specialist nature of our provision, we would welcome applications from individuals with experience gained from a range of appropriate professional backgrounds.

Having completed an assessment of the skills and attributes of our current board and related sub-committees, we now seek to appoint a new co-opted governor to one of our sub-committees. The appointed candidate will be able to discuss their expertise and interests with the Board to identify the committee that they would prefer to sit on.

We welcome applications from candidates who have experience and expertise in relation to SEND & safeguarding. This experience could have been gained through professional roles linked to social care for young people, residential provision, legal frameworks and related sector policy development.

Candidates for this role do not necessarily need to have boardroom experience as we will support them with a full induction process. However, professional experience at a senior level will be important.

We are proud that our college is a hive of activity, where no day is the same, and where our staff and students create a community within itself. As such, we hope that candidates will be individuals who want to contribute to the wider Hereward experience and who have the time to be an active part of our vibrant college community.

In terms of time commitments for governors on our board, there is a need to dedicate not more than a 6 hours per month to the role.

Peridot Partners and Hereward College are, together, committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and our client expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. The successful candidate will be subject to an enhanced DBS check and satisfactory references before any final offer can be made.

A message from the Principal of Hereward College

Thank you for your interest in the exciting and fulfilling role of Co-opted Governor of Hereward College.

Officially we are a general further education college. In reality, we are a unique provider welcoming all learners but with particular expertise in working with students with both simple and complex disabilities and providing individual support to meet learners’ needs. The provision also includes a residential offer. We place a strong focus on promoting individual achievement and have a reputation for providing an inclusive environment which enables all our students, whether residential or day students to fulfil their potential.

We provide a varied curriculum and place a strong emphasis on providing our students with the skills to make a successful transition to work and increase their independence, with results significantly above national averages for progression into employment.

The college is rated Good by Ofsted and has an ESFA financial health rating of Outstanding. The college is ambitious for its learners and is working so that all aspects of its provision are rated as outstanding.

Beyond the college, we have developed effective partnerships with a range of other organisations, including local authorities, other colleges, speciality disability organisations, and employers. We are proud of the value that we provide not only to students but also to the broader community and employers.

We recognise the difficulties of the FE landscape and are looking for candidates who can support the College to both secure its position through current challenges whilst having aspirations for the future, seeking continual good performance, improvement, and innovation. You can be assured of strong support from Corporation colleagues; in return, you will have a demonstrable commitment to students with disabilities.
