We are looking for an ambitious, inspirational and visionary leader who is able to raise the organisation's profile and strengthen international partnerships to ensure CISV is recognised as a long-standing and relevant actor in its field.

  • Location: Flexible (though with our Head Office in Newcastle, UK, a commitment to regular travel to the UK or relocation would be essential)
  • Salary: £60,000 - £75,000 UK (for further discussion depending on location)

About the role

CISV International is a global youth organisation dedicated to educating and inspiring for peace through building inter-cultural friendship, cooperation, and understanding. We believe that peace is possible through building friendship and mutual understanding, starting with children.

We help our young participants develop to their full potential as future leaders and active citizens, to make a difference in their communities and the world through non-formal educational programmes that happen both internationally and locally.

Our ‘learning by doing’ programmes begin with our original and unique Village programme for 11-year-olds. We offer an exciting blend of international camp-based programmes and local community programmes. Our programmes allow our participants and volunteers to develop the competencies of active global citizens and build global friendships and networks that will last them a lifetime.

After 20 years of successful leadership, our current Secretary General will be standing down, which gives us an exciting opportunity to look ahead to the future, and think about what type of leadership will enable CISV International to have the biggest impact in a post-COVID world.

Who we are looking for

As our Secretary General, you will be joining us when we are starting to plan for our future and so you will have the ability to draft our next strategy.

Working with passionate volunteers from 60+ countries who are highly committed, as well as an elected international volunteer Board, requires a leadership style which is collegiate, empowering and highly communicative.

Our next Secretary General will be someone with an international and entrepreneurial mindset who is committed to role modelling inclusive leadership behaviours and with a track record of making workplaces and organisational activities more accessible. It is likely that you will also have experience securing income either via commercial activity, fundraising or securing funded projects.

Experience of working within the non-profit sector at a strategic level (in a work or volunteer capacity) would be welcome. Experience of working in more than one nation would also be advantageous.

Dear Candidate,

Thank you for your interest in becoming CISV International’s Secretary General.

We are a vibrant, volunteer-led international organisation built from the foundations and belief that peace is possible through building friendship and mutual understanding, starting with children. I have been lucky enough to be part of CISV since I was 11 when I attended Village, as a Governing Board member since 2015, and now as elected Chair of the Board from 2019.

We are incredibly proud of the work that we do and the affect we have on so many young lives. We have a small yet strong team of staff, a passionate, committed and diverse Board, and our amazing volunteers across the globe continue to be the very life blood of the organisation.

This is important given the uncertain and challenging times that we face as an organisation, as COVID-19 threatens our finances, human resources and our model of international programmes. It is more important than ever that CISV forms vital strategic partnerships and works towards finding a more sustainable and diversified model for revenue that will alleviate the current reliance we have on international programmes.

Gaby Mandell, our current Secretary General, is moving on in March 2021 after 20 years in post. She leaves a positive legacy behind her, having taken the organisation through substantial growth. We are now looking for a new Secretary General (Chief Executive) to take us forward on the next stage of our journey.

We seek a new Chief Executive who is an ambitious, inspirational and visionary leader, able to raise the organisation’s profile and strengthen our international partnerships so that CISV is recognised as a long-standing and relevant actor in its field.

This is an exciting time for CISV as we continue on our path to develop and improve our approach to safeguarding and in becoming a more inclusive organisation where everyone feels welcome. You will work closely with the Board to continue reviewing the relationship between CISV International and its Members, for expectations, commitments, rules and responsibilities to be clear and mechanisms to be in place to ensure safeguarding and quality standards are equally ensured across the world.

We welcome an exceptional people leader who will bring substantial growth and/or change management experience, ideally from an international charity. Our Chief Executive should understand the dynamic and relationship with the Board and leverage the Board’s experience while allowing us to feel confident enough to step back. You will also bring direct or transferable skills in managing a volunteer led organisation; understanding the complexity of our federated structure.

CISV is an incredible organisation and a privilege to be a part of. We are looking for a new Chief Executive who shares this ethos and has a passion for what we stand for.
