We are now seeking an exceptional Chief Financial Officer to join our executive leadership team at this important stage in our development. The CFO will play a pivotal role in shaping the College’s future, providing strategic financial leadership, driving long-term sustainability and ensuring the organisation is well-positioned to deliver on its ambitions for students, staff, communities and the partners we serve across multiple regions.

This role also offers a chance to embrace a different pace of life, with world-class outdoor experiences right at your doorstep.

Our network of campuses provides accessible, high-quality education in some of the most stunning and distinctive locations in the UK.

About the role

The Chief Financial Officer will provide executive leadership for the College’s financial strategy, long-term sustainability, and organisational resilience. As a key member of the executive leadership team, the CFO will shape and deliver the financial framework that enables the College to navigate sector challenges in Scotland, respond effectively to uncertainty, and invest confidently in its future.

Reporting to, and working in close partnership with, the Principal & Chief Executive, the CFO will provide clear strategic insight, robust financial assurance, and high-quality advice, whilst also working closely with the Board of Management. This role is central to enabling effective governance, supporting informed decision-making, and ensuring the College’s long-term financial health and sustainability.

The CFO holds overall responsibility for financial planning, performance, and risk management – ensuring that agile and robust financial models are fully aligned with strategic priorities and operational delivery. A strong emphasis is placed on embedding financial insight at the heart of decision-making across the organisation.

As the strategic lead for sustainability, the CFO will also integrate financial, environmental, and social responsibility into the College’s operating model, ensuring the organisation delivers long-term value while maintaining responsible and efficient use of resources. In addition, the CFO will oversee key operational enablers, including estates, facilities and IT, ensuring they are effectively aligned to support high-quality learning, staff well-being and student success.

Through visible, inclusive and supportive leadership, the CFO will foster a culture of accountability, performance, and continuous improvement, strengthening organisational alignment and delivery.

The postholder will also play a critical external leadership function, developing and maintaining effective relationships with partners, funders and key stakeholders; actively identifying and securing opportunities that enhance financial resilience and support the College’s wider mission, impact and ambitions.

Who we are looking for

We are seeking an experienced and qualified leader who brings financial leadership experience in a similarly complex organisation.

The successful candidate will bring a proven track record of financial stewardship and resource accountability, along with deep expertise in strategic financial planning, budgeting, forecasting, and long-term financial sustainability.

The postholder will also provide experience in effective financial governance and assurance, including reporting to Finance and Audit Committees and ensuring that robust control environments, risk management frameworks, and compliance standards are consistently maintained.

Given the scale and strategic importance of the role, the successful candidate will also bring substantial experience in building and sustaining effective relationships with a wide range of stakeholders, including senior internal leaders and external partners.

You will have an understanding of and appreciation for public or charity sector finance. Alongside this, we welcome your expertise in financial control, risk management, well-developed commercial acumen, and the ability to balance financial discipline with enabling investment, growth and innovation.

We are looking for a collaborative and inclusive leader with a visible, engaging leadership style. You will be a confident communicator, able to influence at all levels, remain calm and effective under pressure, and bring a strategic, solutions-focused approach to complex and evolving challenges.

As a key requirement of the role is to support the organisation’s continued financial recovery by delivering efficiency programmes and driving cost improvement initiatives, prior experience successfully leading similar change while maintaining focus on organisational vision, values, and long-term strategic priorities would be advantageous.

Living here

Living in the Highlands, Islands and coastal communities of the North and West of Scotland offers a way of life that is both distinctive and deeply rewarding. Set against some of the most striking landscapes in the UK, from mountain ranges and sea lochs to white sand beaches and island coastlines, the environment becomes part of everyday life rather than something saved for weekends.

There is a natural sense of space and calm that shapes the rhythm of living here. Daily routines feel less pressured, with more time to enjoy the outdoors, whether that means a walk along the coast, time on the water or simply taking in the changing light and seasons. It is an environment that supports both well-being and perspective.

Communities are an important part of life across the region. They are welcoming, connected and proud of their heritage, with a strong sense of identity rooted in place. Living here means being recognised, getting involved and having the opportunity to make a meaningful contribution, both professionally and personally.

While these areas can feel remote, they are increasingly well connected. Digital infrastructure continues to improve, and transport links by air and ferry make it possible to stay closely connected to the rest of Scotland and beyond. This allows for a way of working that combines national-level responsibility with the benefits of a more grounded lifestyle.

Homes and surroundings offer a different kind of value, with more space and closer access to nature than is typical in larger cities. Whether based in a small town, a coastal village or on an island, there is a strong sense of balance between work and life.

For many, choosing to live here is not just about location. It is about making a deliberate move towards a different pace, a stronger connection to place and a more fulfilling way of living alongside a senior and impactful career.

Welcome from the Principal & Chief Executive

Thank you for your interest in the role of Chief Financial Officer at UHI North, West and Hebrides.

We are one of Scotland’s largest further and higher education partners within the University of the Highlands and Islands, serving some of the country’s most remote, rural and island communities, from the west coast and Skye to the Outer Hebrides and the north coast. We help people gain the skills they need without leaving home, support local employers in recruiting and growing, and act as an anchor institution in fragile rural and island economies.

This is a particularly exciting time to join us. We are growing our commercial activity and investing in major capital projects, continuing to navigate the financial pressures facing the wider college sector, including the real-terms erosion of rural funding and the distinct cost base of delivering education across dispersed communities.

Our new Chief Financial Officer will play a vital role in shaping our financial strategy, ensuring long-term sustainability and supporting the executive leadership team and Board in delivering our ambitions for the communities we serve. You will join a committed and collaborative team, and an organisation that genuinely cares about the difference it makes: to individuals, to employers, and to the future of the Highlands and Islands.

I very much hope you will consider joining us, and I look forward to meeting you during the recruitment process.

With best wishes,

Lydia Rohmer
Principal and Chief Executive
UHI North, West and Hebrides

About UHI North, West and Hebrides

UHI North, West and Hebrides is an academic partner of the University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI). Originally three individual academic partners: UHI North Highland, UHI Outer Hebrides and UHI West Highland, a merger in 2023 saw the launch of UHI North, West and Hebrides.

Following the merger, we launched an ambitious five-year strategy that will guide our organisation through to 2028.

Our vision is clear: To be an anchor institution for the region – a connected, flexible and sustainable learning organisation, opening doors to a world of opportunities.

Guided by our values of Trust, Integrity and Excellence, we are committed to delivering six strategic goals that will strengthen our impact and ensure our long-term success. These focus on achieving financial sustainability; growing and evolving our curriculum offer; expanding research and knowledge exchange; responding proactively to business and workforce development needs; maximising opportunities that support our mission and regional impact; enhancing the student experience; and building a resilient, agile workforce equipped to respond to future opportunities and challenges.

Together, these priorities will enable us to create a sustainable, innovative and inclusive organisation that continues to transform lives, support communities and contribute to the region’s economic and social prosperity.

UHI North, West and Hebrides continues to invest in the future, creating new opportunities for learners, communities and industry.

One recent development is the launch of 20 new courses, offering a blend of on-campus and online study options. Developed in close collaboration with employers and local communities, these programmes are designed to meet evolving skills needs while opening up new pathways for students at every stage of their educational journey.

Additionally, recognising the Highlands and Islands’ strong heritage in engineering and oil and gas, alongside its rich natural capital and proximity to marine and offshore renewable energy resources, UHI North, West and Hebrides are also strengthening collaboration with employers and industry partners. Through partnerships, the institution is helping to build a fully integrated tertiary talent pipeline, ensuring the workforce is equipped with the skills needed to support the growing green energy sector.

The organisation is also extending its impact internationally. Through a pioneering partnership with Thekwini TVET College in Durban, South Africa, UHI North, West and Hebrides are helping to develop the skilled workforce required to support South Africa’s growing clean energy sector. This landmark collaboration demonstrates our institution’s expanding global reach and our commitment to sharing expertise beyond the Highlands and Islands.

Together, these initiatives demonstrate UHI North, West and Hebrides’ commitment to innovation, collaboration and the development of the skills, partnerships and opportunities needed to thrive in a rapidly changing world.
