Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU) is seeking to appoint a qualified finance professional who will provide robust financial management and strong strategic leadership as the next Chief Finance Officer.
Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU), located in the heart of historic Lincoln in the East Midlands, is a small university that has a significant impact on the communities it serves in Greater Lincolnshire. With a long and successful reputation for offering high standards, since gaining degree awarding powers and university status in 2012, BGU has diversified its academic portfolio and is ambitious to grow student numbers and secure research degree awarding powers moving forward.
To support our growth ambitions and ensure we continue to offer the best educational experience and opportunities to our students, we are seeking to appoint a Chief Finance Officer, who will contribute to the success of the institution as part of the University’s leadership team. With responsibility for the management of the University’s finances, the Chief Finance Officer will report to the Registrar and University Secretary and lead financial planning, control, and robust reporting to ensure the financial sustainability and health of the institution.
The postholder will provide effective financial leadership, offering expert advice and guidance to the Senior Management Group and ensure the University’s financial governance policies and systems are robust and fit for purpose. The postholder will ensure these are aligned to the University’s strategic goals and will manage the accurate and timely reporting of all financial statutory accounts and duties to the Governing Council and all relevant regulatory bodies. The Chief Finance Officer will lead a team of Finance Business Partners, Finance Officers, an Accountant and Procurement Manager to support the operational delivery of financial management across the institution. The postholder will be a Director of BG Lincoln, the University’s subsidiary company.
They will contribute to the management and direction of this commercial enterprise to ensure it is operating effectively and generating additional income generation for the institution.
This is a permanent role and in line with BGU’s flexible working policy will require the postholder to work from campus at least 3 days a week.
With a nationally recognised accountancy qualification and a significant track record of managing financial systems, processes and budgets, we are seeking an experienced or aspiring strategic finance leader. You should be able to clearly demonstrate your experience of holding a position of responsibility as an accounting officer and reporting to senior management and/or into board level in a substantive or interim role. Experience of operating in a similar size or type of organisation and experience of financial management within a regulated environment or framework would be preferable. You must demonstrate a confident leadership style, capable of engaging colleagues and providing assurances to senior leaders around detailed financial accounting issues, as well as providing a steer on strategic direction and creative solutions to financial and funding planning and sustainability.
Candidates should be commercially astute and bring a flexible and creative approach to consider business and financial planning opportunities in support of BGU’s educational mission and strategic aims. You must be adept at building effective relationships across an organisation, have excellent presentational and written communication skills, demonstrate integrity in all interactions and be committed to making decisions based on evidence.
As a small university, sustainability through growth is key. We have taken steps to balance budgets affected by localised and sector-wide challenges and we are seeking someone with the relevant experience, professional credibility, presence, and knowledge to join us to support the delivery of a sustained plan for growth. This will require robust financial management, strong leadership, identification of relevant opportunities to grow, and creative solutions. This is an opportunity to add significant value to an institution and impact the experience and outcomes of our current and future students.
The postholder will lead, control and manage all aspects of financial management and maintain high standards across the University, overseeing budgeting and forecasting, risk management and audit, and pension arrangements. You will be expected to lead by example, providing visible and professional oversight of the professional services areas within your portfolio and adopt a creative, solution-based approach to problem-solving and strategic planning, ensuring the ethos and values of the University underpin leadership decisions at all times.
