About this role

Wrexham Glyndwr Students’ Union is a multi-award winning Students’ Union (SU) which has been on a phenomenal journey since it’s inception in 2016. We are half way through the delivery of our strategic plan, have just completed the Quality Students’ Union process (with some very ambitious targets).

We exist to lead, support and champion our students, many of whom are entering university later in their lives and/or have access needs. We provide students with opportunities to build social communities on campus, and we represent their views, provide advice and work to support them at every stage of their student journey.

Since 2016, we have been in a constant state of development and in 2018 we opened our first bar, the lazy lion. Our journey is about to get even more exciting with recent confirmation that our university partner will be funding a brand new SU building as one of its key objectives within their campus 2025 plan.

The success that we have had, and the investment we have secured has been the result of a fantastic partnership with Wrexham Glyndwr University, and the hard work and dedication from our outgoing Chief Executive, Staff, Officers, Trustees and Volunteers.

Chief Executive

It is critical that we find someone who will be able to continue our positive relationship with our university partner as well as empower the continued growth and development of our team. We will also need you to provide strategic leadership in delivering an organisation which represents the interests of our members, achieves the objectives set out in our strategic plan, and ensures the continuing financial sustainability of the organisation.

This is a great opportunity to lead an SU that has achieved remarkable results in a short period of time and is likely to be on this positive journey for years to come. It’s likely that our successful candidate will have prior experience leading teams of staff, contributing to strategy, leading senior stakeholder relationships and managing budgets.

We don’t expect you to be a current Chief Executive, but we will expect that you have an attitude and enthusiasm for your own professional development as well as the ability to empower staff and students to achieve the great things they are capable of.

On behalf of Wrexham Glyndwr Students’ Union Officers, Trustees and staff, we are pleased and excited that you are interested in becoming our new Chief Executive Officer.

Wrexham Glyndwr Students’ Union has changed significantly over the last three years, growing from a Guild into a multi award winning Students’ Union. WGSU has won the Welsh Student’s Union of the year award 2018, achieved an excellent rating in Green Impact 2018, won an award for the campaign – Period Poverty and more recently won the NUS Welsh staff team of the year 2019. The way in which WGSU is constantly growing offers an exciting opportunity for the right candidate to bring their own expertise and continue to develop our innovative and exciting strategy.

Our four strategic themes are engaging with our students, offering support, challenging and enhancing the quality experience as well as maximising personal development. The strategy was based on feedback provided by students on what they expected and would like to see implemented from their students’ union. This has since been captured in the foundation of our people and culture by empowering officers, students and staff to realise their potential and help develop themselves. WGSU has an excellent team of staff who provide professional advice, incredible support and fantastic services to students.

WGSU has developed an excellent and professional relationship with the University, where we represent and advocate for the student voice with integrity. The right candidate would continue to nurture this relationship and have the freedom of bringing their own ideas and vision to lead WGSU to the next stage. There are exciting times ahead with the university currently in plans to build a brand new Students’ Union building that will offer excellent opportunity for the future. This is all part of the university’s new ‘Campus 2025 Vision’, which will see huge change and improvement over the next few years. The transitional period during this time will require a great team leader who is capable of cultivating and driving the team forward in addition to delivering the strategy regardless of challenges that they may cross. This truly is a great time for someone to come in and embrace this position as WGSU continues to expand.

We are an independent organisation from Wrexham Glyndwr University, and have worked hard to develop an interdependent relationship with them that is based on strong levels of trust, respect and partnership.

We exist to lead, empower and support our students. And we do all that we can to be with them every step of the way through their time at university.

We support students by:

• Being a place where students can come together;
• Providing advice on issues that students face during their time at university.

We have a multi-award winning team of eight staff and two full-time Sabbatical Officers.

Our professional staff delver services that support students such as; advice, sports and societies and support with representation and democracy.

Our Officers represent students to the university and campaign on matters that are important to students.

In the NUS Wales awards, we received the 2019 Best Staff Team award and in 2018 the Best Campaign and Best Overall SU in Wales awards. We are also due to receive a Quality Students’ Union status over the summer.
