Wellspring Settlement is a charity run for, and led by, the community. We aim to work to ensure that everyone in our community has all the opportunities to live the best life they can.  With a particular focus on the residents of Lawrence Hill, Easton, and the surrounding neighbourhoods, we offer a unique space for residents to celebrate, learn, create, develop, relax, socialise, and play.

This is an important and exciting time for Wellspring Settlement as we emerge from the Covid pandemic and embark on our ambitious new strategy. It has been two years since the merger of Barton Hill Settlement and Wellspring Healthy Living Centre, and we are now more committed than ever to combining our areas of work, releasing potential for new service delivery and responding to the ever-growing challenges of our community.

In order to achieve our ambitions, we are seeking a driven and dynamic Chief Executive with a voluntary sector leadership background and a demonstrable commitment to strengthening communities.

You will have the entrepreneurial skills to recognise and act on beneficial opportunities for the organisation and the communities Wellspring Settlement work with. In addition, you will be financially astute and bring experience of generating income to support our organisation priorities, objectives and values.

It is critical that our Chief Executive brings exceptional people leadership skills, alongside the ability to build and retain excellent relationships with our partners and stakeholders. You will be a confident and credible ambassador, with the ability to influence and collaborate at all levels within the sectors we operate in.

Above all else, you will be intrinsically values driven, able to demonstrate your commitment to equalities and how you have developed services and structures around the needs of underrepresented groups.

Thank you for your interest in the post of CEO of Wellspring Settlement.

Our longstanding and well-respected CEO, Joanna Holmes, is stepping down after more than 20 years in the role.  She leaves the organisation at an exciting point in our development.  Two years after the merger of Barton Hill Settlement and Wellspring Healthy Living Centre the hard slog of restructuring staff teams and merging administrative systems is largely behind us. We have a new strategy in place and as we return to normal working following the Covid pandemic we are looking to release the potential for new service delivery which results from combining our areas of work.

Other areas of development lie ahead as well.  At the start of the pandemic, we were able to buy the old pub on the corner of our Ducie Road site which we hope to refurbish and open as much-needed youth provision for the area.  At the other end of the site new offices in a container development are now occupied with planning permission for housing units above when funding can be found.

While there are exciting opportunities for Wellspring Settlement we have to respond to growing challenges for our local community.  The pandemic hit people hard with many formerly employed in the gig economy cast aside as work dried up.  The cost of living crisis coming on top of the cut to Universal Credit has left many people struggling to pay bills.  The legacy of lockdowns and the run down of public services as a consequence of 10 years of austerity has left many sceptical of the authorities.  But there is a pride and resilience in the local community which we will work with to help them get through tough times.

Following the merger Wellspring Settlement is in a relatively robust financial position, owning its buildings with secure tenants providing a steady income and some services with relatively long-term contract funding.  Some fundraising will always be required, but the organisation has fully embraced an entrepreneurial approach and welcomes ideas for income generation.

About Wellspring Settlement

Wellspring Settlement (WS) takes a community development and anchor role for the Lawrence Hill and Easton areas of Bristol as well as a wider focus for some work. The organisation operates from 2 main sites which it owns plus delivers from other venues if appropriate, e.g. GPs surgeries and community venues.

The organisation has a range of services which meet local need and draw the community together, often delivered in partnership with other organisations. WS also acts as landlord to 14 different organisations including a GP surgery, CAMHS teams, The University of Bristol and significant VCSE organisations such as Bristol Refugee Rights and smaller ones like the Bristol Somali Resource Centre. Both main sites offer rooms for hire and other services. Our services and activities reach over 50,000 people per annum.

This mix of activities enables us to be the community anchor for the area and ensures that from young people to the more mature, from new residents of our locality to those who have lived here all their lives, everyone is welcome.
