Warwick SU is an independent organisation that is part business, part charity, and part membership body. We exist to help students influence and make change, to improve their lives and fulfil their potential. One of more than 550 students’ unions across the country, Warwick Students’ Union has more than 24,000 members, over 250 societies, 70 sports clubs, hundreds of elected representatives and huge range of services including two commercial trading subsidiaries.
We have a talented team of staff, elected officers and trustees who do all they can to ensure that students have a great time at Warwick. We have just finished our current strategic plan which focused on helping students navigate the challenges of student life, as well as helping them to shape the future that they want. We are now in the process of developing our 2019-2023 strategy, which you will have an opportunity to influence. Our themes are not yet finalised, but it is likely that inclusion, equality and equity will be at their heart.
As our Chief Executive, you will have the opportunity to build on our sustainable financial platform, and create a culture that can enable us to thrive and successfully deliver the next strategic plan. Working in partnership with Warwick University is critical and you will be excited by the prospect of working alongside a leading university in an ever-changing higher education sector.
We are looking for you to bring significant leadership experience, the resilience to handle the challenges supporting students can present, and the gravitas to lead senior stakeholder relationships. The ability to build an ever more positive and inclusive culture is at the heart of what we do.
We expect that you are likely to have had leadership experience in a complex multi-faceted organisation, with prior responsibility for driving strategy and developing culture. Experience supporting and developing governance is desirable as is experience of working in higher education, with commercial subsidiaries and with individuals who are often in their first leadership positions.

Separate from the University, we are the independent, not-for-profit, democratic organisation of students at Warwick that represents, advocates for, campaigns for, and enhances students’ rights and experience. We have come great lengths in the last 10 years, from financial difficulty to now being a thriving £8 million operation. In the heart of campus, we provide vast commercial operations, facilitate student voice, and promote student activities and opportunities.
The world students find themselves in continues to drastically change. Ever increasing living and tuition costs and greater marketisation in and out of education means that students’ expectations and needs from us are changing.
The Chief Executive is paramount in ensuring that we win for our 24,000 members. You will drive and implement our emerging Strategic Plan, inspire and support our 110 permanent and 350 student staff members who are passionate and dedicated, and ensure that everything we do is driven by students and is impactful to them.

We are just in the process of developing our next Big Plan (2019-2023), as part of this we are conducting a strategic review to determine our direction of travel. Our last review was in 2015, which is why we’re now beginning the process again to cover the years 2019-2023. In an ever-changing landscape for Higher Education in the UK, it is vital that we remain both reactive and proactive, and that our services remain relevant to our members’ diverse range of needs.
Utilising feedback and ideas from student surveys, focus groups, Officer manifestos and more, Our Big Plan 2019-23 is shaped by students and will provide a road-map of the direction for Union: where we’ve come from, where we’re headed, and what our members want from us. By the time you join us, it’s likely that we will have developed the what key themes are will be aiming to deliver.
