Chief Executive University of Central Lancashire Students’ Union (UCLan SU)

We are looking for a Chief Executive to join us at this exciting time and want you to deliver our strategy to its full potential.

  • Location: Preston, open to flexible working requests.
  • Salary: £50,000 - £60,000

UCLan SU is here to deliver a top-class Students’ Union experience for all our members.

As a Students’ Union we exist to represent and support students studying at the University of Central Lancashire. We are separate from the University, which allows us to represent students and offer free independent advice and support when needed. As a democratically-led charity, our students help shape our activities in support of members and what we say to the University.

2020 was not a normal year for UCLan SU – or for anyone. It was, however, an important year for us.

Our 2016-2020 strategy had run its course and we wanted to draw breath and decide what, as an organisation, we should focus on over the next three years: 2021–2024. We involved over 1,000 of our members and designed a new plan based on three core themes: Student Voice, Student Life and Student Community.

We are looking for a Chief Executive to join us at this exciting time and want you to deliver our strategy to its full potential and to think about how we can showcase the impact we achieve during this time.

Over the course of our next strategy, we will also need to review our physical offer and explore new ways to complement our existing income streams.

We are seeking an inclusive leader with a track record of making services, projects and workplaces more accessible. It will also be important that our CEO has a collaborative style, experience of leading change and evidence of successfully empowering teams.

At this moment in time our staff team is not representative of the incredibly vibrant ethnic diversity of our students and the wider community in Preston. We therefore especially encourage applications from candidates who are Black, Asian or from any other under-represented ethnic community.

We can be flexible in our approach, work patterns and assessments, so if there are any barriers that may prevent you from applying, please don’t hesitate to get in touch so that we can talk these through.

Closing date: 9am, Monday 11th October 2021

Dear Candidate,

Thank you for taking an interest in our Chief Executive recruitment.

At the University of Central Lancashire Students’ Union we exist to make student life the best it can be. It’s an exciting time for us with a new 3 year strategy focused on student voice, student life and student community. We are looking for a people-oriented, visionary and creative CEO to drive the organisation into the next stage of its growth and development.

We’re navigating out of a challenging 18 months, and our focus will be on ensuring we effectively deliver our new strategic plan and work collaboratively with the university to respond to current issues affecting our students. You will place a high importance on student leadership and provide support, guidance and effectively challenge our Elected Officers in their work.

As a widening participation university, our student body continues to thrive off diversity. However, this diversity is not currently reflected in our staffing profile. You’ll be passionate about improving diversity, equity and inclusion at the Students’ Union, and will drive adaptation and change so we can meet our students’ needs and ensure they have the best possible academic and student experience at UCLan.

We are looking for someone who can build and maintain strong relationships with the University and wider stakeholders, so that the student voice remains credible and at the centre of all key decisions the university makes.

We will shortly be welcoming new Trustees to our Board, so there is a real opportunity for the new CEO and the Board to work together to strengthen the Union as a charity by implementing recommendations from our recent governance review.

This is an exciting time to join an organisation with people who put students at the centre of everything they do.

We look forward to hearing from you.

Zuleikha Chikh
