About us

We are an NHS Foundation Trust providing first class services at Warrington Hospital, Halton General Hospital and the Cheshire and Merseyside Treatment Centre in the North West of England.

Our mission is to be Outstanding for our patients, our communities and each other

In order to realise this goal, we recognise that we need the engagement and collaboration of our staff, our patients and local population and our partners across the health and care system.

We commit to:

  • Always put our patients first through high quality, safe care and an excellent patient experience
  • Be the best place to work with a diverse, engaged workforce that is fit for the future
  • Work in partnership to design and provide high quality, financially sustainable services in innovative and modern buildings.

We believe WHH has a strong future as part of a progressive local integrated health and care system with new hospital estate at the heart and a focus on supporting our populations to live long and healthy lives independently. Internally, our focus firmly remains on continually improving the quality of our care, embracing new ways of working and developing and empowering our staff to lead change and improvement.

Our 5-Year Strategy

Our WHH Strategy sets out the vision for the next five years for your hospitals, setting out the plans that we have to continue to deliver high quality, safe and sustainable health and care services for the local population of Warrington and Halton and beyond. It highlights any changes that you might see to our services as we adapt to the demands from an ageing population and the rapidly changing local and national picture across the wider NHS.

Our 5-Year Strategy

Our mission and vision is laid out in our 5-year strategy. It explains how we aim to be OUTSTANDING for our patients, our communities and each other. We work to a number of nationally and locally set targets – including our own QPS (Quality, People and Sustainability) framework to ensure that you receive the care you need when you need it, and to the highest national quality and safety standards. We also provide those services within a strict financial budget which we are responsible for delivering.

Three hospitals, two sites, one great team

The majority of our emergency care and complex surgical care is based at Warrington Hospital whilst Halton General Hospital in Runcorn is a centre of excellence for routine surgery. The Cheshire and Merseyside Treatment Centre is home to our orthopaedic surgery services.

The hospital sites are around 10 miles apart and are easily accessible being very close to the North West motorway network.

Although each hospital site specialises in particular aspects of care, we provide outpatient clinics for all our specialties and diagnostic (scanning) services at both Warrington and Halton so people can access their initial appointments close to home wherever possible. We also provide some outpatient services in the local community.

We’ve invested heavily in our hospitals over recent years – nearly every ward has been refurbished and we’ve seen development of new facilities and departments that make our hospitals a great place to receive your care.

Membership and engagement

We are committed to engaging with our patients, public and staff and using your views and ideas to help shape our services. A key way that we can do this is through our Foundation Trust membership.

We became an NHS Foundation Trust on 1st December 2008 which is when we became Warrington and Halton Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Prior to this we were called North Cheshire Hospitals NHS Trust.

NHS foundation trusts were created to devolve decision making from central government to local organisations and communities. As an NHS Foundation Trust we have a free membership scheme that you can join. You can have your say and get more involved in how your hospitals are run.

Over 10,000 local people have joined us as Foundation Trust members to get more involved through surveys, events, or just by receiving information on their health and our hospitals.
