Following the retirement of our previous Chief Executive Officer, Philip Storey, and a successful interim period, The University of Kent Academies Trust seeks a new Chief Executive Officer to lead us as we enter an exciting strategic phase of consolidation and development.

The University of Kent Academies Trust (UKAT) is a sponsor-led Academy Trust that focuses on improving the life experience of our learners and providing our communities with excellent education. We are a small family of two secondary schools. UKAT has evolved over time and continues to do so in response to the national education climate, and still, we remain underpinned by our focus on improving educational outcomes and opportunity for our learners.

As a Trust, we are guided by a set of core values that underpin its approach to education. We have two schools in the Trust at present. Our schools retain their identities which is fundamental to ensuring that their learners have access to the most relevant education and have an environment where they can flourish. UKAT provides the underpinning support and assurance that encourages prosperity.

Brompton Academy has embarked on a transformative journey following the Ofsted ‘Requires Improvement’ grading in 2022. Our journey following this has been positive; through our commitment to achieving excellence we remain excited by the future for our learners and the community we serve. Brompton Academy is determined to provide its students with a broad and enriching curriculum, ensuring they have the knowledge and experiences necessary for success.

Chatham Grammar is a thriving school academically. Having received a “Good” rating from Ofsted in 2017,

we continue to strive for excellence and are hopeful of achieving more when the next inspection comes. Recognising that the learner experience transcends the classroom, we are proud to design an enriching curriculum and extra-curricular programme for our learners. We are excited to be moving from a single-sex school to a co-educational model where we can begin to impact more learners.

The vision of UKAT is clear and inspiring – to provide an education that empowers students to become confident, capable, and compassionate individuals who can thrive in a rapidly changing world. Following the resignation and retirement of our previous Chief Executive Officer, Philip Storey, we have been operating under a successful interim arrangement, but now seek a new permanent Chief Executive Officer as we embark on the next phase of our journey.

Who we are looking for

As the Chief Executive Officer of the University of Kent Academies Trust (UKAT), you will provide inspirational strategic leadership, working closely with our university sponsor and trustees, to shape the vision, values, and ethos that define UKAT. Your goal is to inspire and empower every member of the trust community to join us in achieving this vision. You will be committed to ensuring that all students across our trust have access to the best educational opportunities possible.

Our new Chief Executive Officer must possess a unique blend of qualities and competencies that align with our core values and objectives. Firstly, they should be a true leader, capable of fostering positive working relationships both within and outside the Trust. Their leadership style should be collaborative, emphasizing teamwork and the ability to inspire others on a journey towards shared goals.

While a traditional background in education, such as being a Headteacher is not required, you must demonstrate the credibility and kudos to lead effectively in an educational environment. Our new Chief Executive Officer must have a strategic mindset which supports us. Additionally, you should have the capacity to evaluate information for informed decision-making.

Proven experience in managing large teams, is crucial as we look to consolidate, and grow in the future. Understanding assurance frameworks and strategies to ensure we uphold a high quality of impactful education is important, and retaining, and building a team with the right people to deliver excellence will be key. As Chatham moves into a co-educational model, and Brompton Academy aims to achieve its Ofsted rating, we must ensure that our new Chief Executive Officer can lead a trust delivering excellent education outcomes.

In terms of strategic governance, the ideal candidate will have a solid grasp of governance principles and demonstrate a strategic mindset. As we look to the next phase of our journey, we want to ensure that we continue to be impactful on our communities, and we won’t lose sight of our values and mission. Our new Chief Executive Officer will build a strategy that aligns with our Trust’s vision and values.

We are pleased with our Trust’s excellent financial position. Though, like every Multi-Academy Trust nationally, we recognise that there are always financial challenges to overcome, we can celebrate being a financially prosperous trust. Our new Chief Executive Officer must be able to demonstrate a good financial acumen and be able to work with our Finance Director.

Our Chief Executive Officer should be attuned to public benefit and civic duty, comprehending statutory requirements and guidelines for Multi-Academy Trusts. They must assess how our educational offerings support community well-being and have a strategic approach to community engagement. As we enter a new phase of UKAT’s development, we need an ambassador who can be the public face of our organisation, who is effective in managing stakeholder relations with DfE, the Local Authority, Ofsted and our partners.

We operate in a highly populated area of Multi-Academy Trusts. Our belief in the work that we do and impact that we have on our communities has led us to a stance of reluctance to join with other MATs. Our new Chief Executive Officer must be resilient and focussed on meeting the goals of UKAT. You should be a leader who inspires rather than simply exert authority, and they should understand the unique demands of our community in Medway.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership: You will lead the development of UKAT in alignment with our mission, values, and vision. Your responsibility is to create an effective corporate environment that fosters the growth of both the trust and its constituent academies. You will oversee strategic plans, self-evaluation, risk management, and ensure proactive risk mitigation.

Leadership: You will proactively drive UKAT’s strategic priorities and oversee all trust operations, including policy development and implementation. Your aim is to provide motivational and inspirational leadership at all levels, ensuring continuous improvement and excellence.

Resource/Change Management: You will manage the learning environment resources, oversee large-scale asset management, and ensure effective talent management and professional development across the trust. You will keep abreast of changing legislation, initiatives, and practices.

Finance and Procurement: You will serve as the Accounting Officer for UKAT, delegate financial responsibilities appropriately, and maintain a strong relationship with funding bodies to secure resources. Budgeting and financial sustainability are key aspects of your role.

Compliance: You are committed to ensuring that UKAT meets all legislative and statutory requirements, including health and safety, safeguarding, data protection, and funding agreements.

Partnerships: You will develop and lead a partnership strategy that connects UKAT with local, national, and international education networks. Building relationships and sharing expertise across the trust are priorities.

Organisational Citizenship: You will participate in the staff performance management process, exhibit civic virtue, adhere to professional conduct standards, and prioritize the welfare of children and young people.

About UKAT

The University of Kent Academies Trust (UKAT) is an established multi academy trust (MAT) that has two Secondary Schools in Medway, Chatham Grammar School (CG) and Brompton Academy (BA).  Chatham Grammar is a selective 11 – 19 girls school with a mixed sixth form and Brompton Academy is a mixed comprehensive school, with a joint sixth form across the two schools. The Trust schools work collaboratively together to transform the life chances of all our young people and the wider community in Medway.

The individual schools have their own Principals and they are responsible for establishing the ethos and vision of each school within the framework of the Trust’s philosophy and values.  Each school is different in its approach to learning and has its own core beliefs and values established.  This enables UKAT to offer students a unique educational experience where students feel encouraged, supported and nurtured to be the best that they can be. We are ambitious and courageous, as we want young people to aspire to reach their goals and aspirations above and beyond any limitations they might perceive to exist.
