Chief Executive | Age UK Croydon

Ensure all older people in Croydon are heard and supported to be active, engaged and included in our vibrant community

  • Location: Croydon
  • Salary: c.£65,000

Our mission is to lead the way in empowering, enabling, supporting and connecting older people in the London Borough of Croydon to live well, healthily and independently. As Chief Executive you will be expected to keep the voice of service users at the centre of our work and vision, by ensuring we reach older people from across all of Croydon’s diverse community.

Age UK Croydon is independent from the National Age UK charity but is approved to hold the Age UK brand and contribute to national campaigns. We have an expert team of 45 staff and around 150 volunteers who work together to deliver our extensive range of services and activities. Our income last year was £1.8m, largely through charitable activities. With services spanning information and advice, health, wellbeing, falls prevention, dementia support, one to one personal independence coordinators, befriending and social activities, Age UK Croydon offers a holistic solution for older people to access the services they require in one place. Despite the many challenges that arose through 2020, we’ve supported more clients than ever, around 12,000 in 2020/21.

It’s an exciting and crucial time to join us as we seek to grow and redevelop our Brigstock Road Community Hub and office space, work that will enable us to continue serving Croydon for years to come.

Age UK Croydon is also a lead partner of the One Croydon Alliance. A partnership led by the NHS in Croydon, Croydon Council and ourselves, designed to support the health and wellbeing of everyone in Croydon.

Who we are looking for:

We are looking for a CEO that has a suite of skills which enables them to sustain the positive culture of the organisation whilst leading on our ability to grow. You will be a visible, inclusive and inspirational leader who is able to influence externally and strategically lead our team whilst also being hands-on and motivated by our mission.

To be our Chief Executive you must have a track record of growing organisations in senior leadership positions and working with a Board. Imperative to our success is the diversification of fundraising methods and increase of unrestricted funds to ensure our future sustainability in an increasingly challenging financial environment. We also expect our volunteer numbers to double as Covid restrictions ease.

You need to be innovative, commercially minded, have a good understanding of financial management and driven by the use of data and evidence to guide our decision making, strategy and work with partners.

We value and promote diversity and appreciate the best leadership teams reflect the communities they serve. We strongly encourage applications from people across all groups that are underrepresented. Most importantly, we recognise that skills and experience can be lived as well as learnt.

Closing date: 9 am Monday 16th August

Dear candidate,

Thank you for taking an interest in our Chief Executive recruitment.

It’s an exciting time in the development of Age UK Croydon (AUKC) and as such we are looking for someone with well-grounded charity leadership experience and a strong track record of improving clients’ lives, particularly with regard to their health and social care needs. Our Chief Executive also needs to be someone who recognises and values the major contribution older people make to community life and wider society, someone who engages well with people from all walks of life and different backgrounds.

You’re likely to already have worked as a senior leader and bring strong communication and collaboration skills with insight into the challenges that the Pandemic has brought for individuals and for organisations like ours. As public resources come under increasing strain, we need our Chief Executive to be effective in raising funds and creative in how they will address financial challenges, both to sustain existing services whilst also growing our service offer.

Croydon is London’s largest borough by population size with areas of affluence alongside areas of major deprivation. The borough is home to people from many different communities, with our residents coming from a rich diversity of backgrounds: for example, 52.7% of people identified as from an ethnic minority heritage in the 2011 census. AUKC is committed to strengthening how we reach out to our diverse communities to improve our engagement and the quality of residents’ lives, whether as clients, volunteers, trustees or staff. So, our Chief Executive needs to be able to demonstrate that they have the skills and imagination to take this on, by drawing on their own lived and/or professional experience.

Please do take the time read through all the information regarding this role and contact Peridot Partners for an informal and confidential conversation if this could be of interest to you.

We would forward to receiving your application and hopefully working with you on developing the future success of Age UK Croydon and enhancing the lives of the older people living in the borough.

Kind regards,

Brenda Scanlan (Interim Joint-Chair) and Sam Nicklin (Vice-Chair and Chair Designate)

We are Age UK Croydon, and our vision is a Croydon where everyone can love later life.

Our mission is to lead the way in empowering, enabling, supporting, and connecting older people in the London Borough of Croydon to live well, healthily, and independently.

Despite the many challenges that arose through 2020, we’ve supported more clients than ever, around 12,000 in 2020/21, we’ve connected with more partner organisations to offer additional support and signposting, and we’ve designed new ways of working internally – all of which will stand us in good stead as we move through the years ahead.

We continue to be guided by our Five-Year Strategy and our desire to serve our community.  Our strategic objectives remain relevant today and provide a clear framework for our services and future development under the headings of: Generating unrestricted income, Innovation and Governance.

We are independent of the national Age UK charity, but have passed its quality standard allowing us to hold the Age UK brand, participate in national campaigns and add the voice of our clients to lobbying efforts, keeping older people’s rights on the national agenda.

“The objects for which the charity is established and to which it is specifically restricted are to promote the wellbeing of older people in the London Borough of Croydon.”

Volunteers

Our Volunteer Programme was greatly affected by the onset of the pandemic, as almost half of our volunteers were unable to continue engaging in their regular roles. Most of our volunteers’ interactions are with clients and in the office supporting with activities and providing admin support. With the abrupt shift to home working and remote activities, it was a real disruption to how we normally work.

However, there was an unprecedented outpouring of support, not only from our volunteers, but from the wider community as well, as we were overwhelmed with enquiries, applications, and emails from individuals offering their time and skills to support older people in Croydon.

The future of volunteering

Successful implementation of our Volunteer Strategy for 2021/22 could potentially see our volunteer team double in size.  Our aim is to ensure that volunteers are woven into the fabric of the organisation: by working more closely alongside staff, inputting into the design and evolution of services, and leading our various activities and services, in addition to functioning in admin and technical support.

Our Vision

We are Age UK Croydon and our vision is a Croydon where everyone can love later life.

Our Mission

Our mission is to lead the way in empowering, enabling, supporting and connecting older people in the London Borough of Croydon to live well, healthily and independently.

Our Values

Our core values are at the heart of how we work. They represent the feeling we want people to get when they work with us and they guide the decisions we make as individuals and as an organisation.

  • Integrity                 We treat everyone equally and with respect
  • Empowerment      We work with people to ensure their independence
