Northumbria Students’ Union is a £4.3m student-led charity with an ambition to have a positive impact on the lives of all students at Northumbria University.

We are a proud community of 32,000 students based in Newcastle, London and Amsterdam. We believe that when our students come together, they have the power to make changes that enhance their lives as well as the lives of others around them.

We operate an impressive range of services from healthy cafes, bars, advice services, leadership development programmes for women, non-binary and black students and over 130+ societies. NSU employs over 170 dedicated staff at the busiest time of the year, with a core of around 55 people on a year-round basis. We enjoy an excellent relationship with our University partner and a good financial position.

Who we are looking for

Our new Chief Executive will join us at an exciting time as we emerge from the pandemic, reflect on what we have learned and set a new ambitious strategic plan for 2022 and beyond.

We will need a decisive leader with an innovative mindset and dynamic leadership skills required to drive our new strategy, deliver operational excellence and transform our great services into excellent ones.

Experience of leading a portfolio of services, large teams and managing complex budgets are all important. However, we are most interested in leaders with a track record of bringing strategic thinking and role modelling inclusive leadership behaviours.

The NSU team is unique and diverse with varied experience and expertise, all with a shared passion to do the very best they can to ensure life at Northumbria University is the best it can be for all our students.

As NSU President, I take enormous pride in our team’s hard work and dedication who continue to push boundaries, innovate, adapt and overcome to ensure we’re always making progress on behalf of our members in all aspects of their University life. This includes access to quality education through representation and advice, through to their wellbeing and resilience as we build a community on campus with our clubs, societies and multiple award winning commercial services.

About Northumbria Students' Union (NSU)

NSU is independent from the University and a Company Limited by Guarantee (No.10807853) and registered charity (No.1174053) however the University and Students’ Union work closely together to deliver a first-rate service to students.

When a student joins Northumbria University, they automatically become a member of the Union.

There are currently over 32,000 members studying at Northumbria courses here in Newcastle, in London and Amsterdam. NSU is integral to the provision of the modern, top class service provided to the student membership.

Our mission is to have “a positive impact on the lives of all our students” and our core organisational values are: Democratic; Inclusive; Ethical; Innovation; Quality; Partnership.

NSU has a team of professional managers who implement NSU’s policies, undertake the strategic and day-to-day management of NSU and manage the staff.

The Senior Leadership Team of NSU consists of the five Sabbatical Officers (current Northumbria students who are elected annually and can serve for a maximum of two academic years), the Chief Executive, Director of Commercial Services, Director of Membership Services & HR and Finance Manager. The Sabbatical Officers and Senior Managers oversee the day to day running of the Students’ Union and are accountable to the Board of Trustees.

We are a great employer who values our staff and are committed to staff engagement. In addition, our recent staff survey revealed that 95% of staff would recommend the organisation as a good place to work. NSU employs 55 permanent salaried staff and around 170 temporary student staff.

NSU exists to represent students to the University and other bodies and to provide social and development opportunities as well as key services. In addition to the commercial services NSU provides academic and welfare support, training, development opportunities, volunteering opportunities. As well as supporting over 4500 in student societies and groups (130+) who are increasingly using our facilities and venues to host a diverse range of events.
