ellenor is recognised as the local expert in caring for people with palliative care needs at end of life for adults and children living in North Kent and Bexley, covering a population of around 250,000. The focus is on enabling people to be cared for and to spend their end of life in a place of their choice – either in their own homes or in nursing homes with care supported and coordinated by specialist teams.

ellenor is a major provider of children’s hospice care and respite care for babies, children and young adults with palliative and life-threatening care needs. In addition, providing a specialist nursing service to children undergoing cancer treatment. Through a comprehensive and well-developed transition service, ellenor supports young people to move into adult services.

With an ‘Outstanding’ Care Quality Commission (CQC) rating, ellenor services include Inpatient Ward, Living Well and well-being services, comprehensive Hospice@Home services both at home and in care homes, and a range of out-patient and community services, delivered through specialist palliative care, multi-disciplinary teams of doctors, nurses and other professionals. They also provide information to assist individuals in making decisions and offer advocacy support to help to make choices a reality, as well as social, emotional and spiritual support and advice for patients, children, families and carers.

Working with primary care, community health teams and hospital staff and others, ellenor seeks to contribute to an improved experience for all individuals at end of life, through partnership working, training, support and coordination. They commit to sharing expertise to influence and support emerging palliative care organisations in the UK and internationally.

Each year, it costs £7 million to care for and support patients and their families facing life-limiting illnesses. £4.9m of funds are raised through the generosity of local supporters. The ellenor team is made up of more than 200 full and part-time staff who help make precious moments for the patients and families who are cared for.

About the role

We seek an experienced, professional Chief Executive Officer with the drive and passion to provide strategic and inspirational leadership across the organisation, ensuring that ellenor is a modern, forward-thinking, and resilient organisation and a leader in hospice palliative and end-of-life care.

Accountable to the trustee board, our Chief Executive Officer will be responsible for the development and implementation of a strategy and will work closely with the Chief Operating Officer, directors and senior managers to maintain focus on excellence in patient care and family support.

Working in partnership with the trustee board you will ensure that the board receives timely and appropriate advice and information on all relevant matters. You will encourage an inclusive open and transparent culture and actively encourage and support the sharing of expertise through collaborative relationships with other hospices and health service providers in the area.

You will ensure the organisation fulfils its legal, statutory and regulatory responsibilities with overall responsibility for financial sustainability, with an understanding of income generation and encouragement of a fundraising ethos across the organisation. You will be responsible for ensuring services are delivered to the highest standards of clinical governance and that appropriate standards, controls, systems and processes are in place and regularly evaluated.

This is an exciting time to join ellenor as we are now able to progress the first phase of our capital build expansion plans being led by our Chief Operating Officer and which will see a new wellbeing centre and additional office accommodation being constructed over the coming two years.

You will have a proven track record of effective leadership and management of an organisation, or large division/department, in a relevant regulated health or charity environment. You will be an exceptional and inspiring leader with a proven track record of leading change at a senior level through collaboration and positive working relationships.

With experience of working collaboratively with a board of trustees and encouraging an inclusive, open and transparent culture and approach you will deliver a first-class person-centred service and environment that is committed to excellence. Above all, you will put staff, patients, and families at the heart of everything.

You will bring a strong focus and a commitment to delivering outstanding care with operational efficiency and financial sustainability.

You will have broad commercial and strong skills in financial management to include budget planning and cost control at a strategic level, and a good understanding of income generation and commissioning to encourage a fundraising ethos across the organisation.

You will have strong ambassadorial and influencing skills with the ability to build outstanding internal and external relationships, develop collaborative opportunities, and represent the organisation externally at a local, regional, and national level.

The ellenor Foundation was founded in 1985, inspired by a vision that those facing the end of life should have only the best care possible either at home, or as close to it as possible.

The ellenor group has two subsidiaries. Ellenor Lions Hospices Trading Limited which conducts the trading elements of the charity, mainly through the sale of goods from their charity shops. The other subsidiary is Ellenor Lions Hospice Lottery Company Limited which raises funds for the charity through the administration of a lottery. The distributable profits of the two subsidiary companies are gift aided to the charity at year end.

Services

We deliver hospice palliative care through teams of nurses, doctors, nursing assistants, counsellors, and other professionals including therapists (such as counselling, therapies and spiritual support for patients and their families and wellbeing therapies) and carer support workers.

We care for people through our range of services which include:

  1. Hospice at Home for adults.
  2. Care home support services
  3. Children services.
  4. Well-being services.
  5. Outpatient and Living Well Services
  6. Inpatient ward

In response to the pandemic, thanks to the hard work of our staff, supported by our volunteers, we expanded care capacity in some of our services and increased patient contacts.

The increase in services to patients and their families we delivered during the year was recognised by the additional £2.3m grant support from the government via Hospice UK.

We increased our inpatient beds and patient contacts and provided PPE training to care homes to help our local health and social care providers during the pandemic. We were immensely proud of how quickly our staff and volunteers, pulled together to find creative ways to adapt our services, fundraising, facilities and resources to ensure our services continued. We were pleased these efforts were recognised in the feedback and support we received from our Clinical Commissioning Group and local hospital trusts, which helped us build stronger collaborative relationships.
