About the role

Chester Students’ Union (CSU) is a c.£500K charity that exists to support the 19,000 students at the University of Chester. We support students by delivering a comprehensive range of services to empower students and enable them to have the best possible experience during their time at university.

We are coming to the end of a major change programme which has seen us transform our union hub, refocus our activities, empower our staff and rebuild our relationship with the University of Chester. We are also in the process of refreshing our Trustee board. We have an excellent team of elected officers, volunteers and staff who work tirelessly for students, and this effort is reflected in our students voting for us as one of the best students’ unions in the UK – awarding us a Top 10 spot in the WhatUni Choice Awards 2019. A remarkable achievement given the scale of change recently.

This is a wonderful time to join as our Chief Executive. You will have the opportunity to design our next strategy, lead innovation in our services, develop our organisational structures and provide the leadership to enable us to be even better in the future.

Who we're looking for

We feel that our next Chief Executive should thrive in fast-paced environments, be passionate about making change and be able to inspire, motivate and empower others. We are on a positive trajectory, have considerable potential and are excited by the prospect of recruiting a Chief Executive who can grow with us.

We are open-minded about your background, although not-for-profit or higher education sector experience would be ideal, but this is not essential. We expect that you will have experience in managing budgets, leading people, delivering change and contributing towards the development of strategy.

We are able to be flexible on working arrangements in the short-term, but we do feel that it’s important to have someone who will be based local to us in the medium to long-term.

We are a continually developing charitable organisation that hosts a range of opportunities, activities and events to allow our students to thrive. Chester Students' Union is a charitable organisation that exists to represent the voices of the 19,000 students who study at the University of Chester

We deliver a comprehensive range of services to support and empower students to have the best possible experiences during their time at Chester.

We have recently delivered big changes to the Union, including a newly refurbished student union hub with more spaces and facilities than ever before. We have also delivered several internal changes including restructuring our staff team to build a Senior Leadership Team and empowering those individuals to take a greater level of ownership for the services they lead on.

Our elected officers, volunteers and staff work tirelessly for students, and this effort is reflected in our students voting for us as one the best SUs in the UK, awarding us a Top Ten spot in the WhatUni Choice Awards 2019.

Our Services:


CSU is run by students, for students. As an organisation, we work to represent students academically and to enhance their overall student experience. We want to make it as easy as we can for students to get involved and make their voices heard!

Some of our engagement methods include:

Union on tour – representing students across nine campuses isn’t easy. But, we have people based on three campuses including our main hub at Chester Parkgate, as well as Shrewsbury and Warrington. We also go out and take the SU to students on other campuses on a regular basis.

Big ideas – students can submit and vote on ideas via our website.

Campaigns – we deliver a range of campaigns every year, informed by our students, which students can take part in.


We provide a confidential advice service, run by professional, qualified members of staff who can offer guidance on several core topics. Our Advice Centre is free, confidential, independent and non-judgemental. We offer advice on: accommodation, education, keeping safe, health and wellbeing. We also provide support for students applying for financial assistance funds.


CSU has 70+ societies for students to get involved in during their time at university; providing students with opportunities to build inclusive communities across our campuses. Our societies cover everything from hobbies, academic interests and liberation groups.
